Greg, you have the neatest fan install on KZbin that I have found. I'm installing two Maxxfans in my sprinter this week and am using your video as a guide. I plan to use plastic screw caps filled with sealant over the screws for a uniform look and to protect the sealant from Sun and UV. That is the only way I thought of to improve on your brilliant example. Thank you for the whole video series. I know there are many people around the world following your tutorials. They have been recommended to me several times, but they are preaching to the converted. I might christen my van Greg, or at least GV, Greg Virgoe and Great Van, same initials, go figure.

Nice install and nice fans. I love the blower feature so you can really get a good cross draft. Good for keeping condensation down. The silicon scrapers are excellent, I was never happy with my beads until I watched the "ultimate handyman" show a product called a Fugi kit. Worth a watch and the Fugi is top notch.

@GregVirgoe7 жыл бұрын
Hi Brent, cutting a big hole in the roof of your van is very a nervous time for anyone but if I cab give you a couple of bits of advice it's these. Measure, measure and measure again. Then make sure you have a new fine toothed HSS blade and it will make the cut much cleaner. Thank you for watching and best of luck with your build.
@GregVirgoe6 жыл бұрын
That sounds just fine, you do need ventilation for cooking, both for combustion of the gas and toe tract the condensation build up. If you have opening windows and doors that with a single roof van will work

Sikaflex is also sold in Canada, I discovered thanks to you that there was a primer No. 210 to be used prior the application of Sikaflex sealant: I will look for it here. I am watching tons of videos about caravan construction and van conversions, either from North America and Europe and I noticed that North Americans were putting tons of caulking over flanges and screw heads, Europeans were not. I think that effective sealant should be located UNDER flanges and screw heads, not over. It is the first time I see someone from Europe putting sealant over screw heads.

Cracking tips as usual Greg. We're looking forward to doing our on conversion as we are away quite often with our daft Springer Spaniel and your tips make it look achievable by mere mortals! One thing I have discovered when cutting holes in thin materials is that it vibrates. A lot! To minimise this, after the first cut, I put a piece of gaffa tape over the cut to hold it in place, then do the other three. I find that cuts down (see what I did there?😏) on the vibration and reduces the risk of creases on the skin of the van. I hope that helps? Keep up the great work 👍

You have GOT to be an engineer by trade. ;) That's a really solid fan installation, especially with that support frame underneath. We use Sikaflex on the boat as well (not the caravan stuff, of course). Really happy with it as a product. And yeah, one doesn't need tons of it (though on a 40 ft boat, it adds up).

Having done some campervan conversions myself I really enjoy your work and the thoughtful planning before the/any act. Your videos are definitely a joy to watch! However, I wouldn't really dare to handle that sharp edged metal while doing those cutouts with no protective gloves on my hands. The guy doing the windows (in a previous vid) also seemed to do the cutting and bending away the cut metal strips with bare hands... Don't ever do this (especially) when your experience with that kind of work is somewhat limited, I' say. You'll need both hands and preferably all fingers intact for the work to come in further stages of the conversion.

I'm installing my roof vent fan on a flat spot on my van (no ribs, though the roof is slightly curved). Hi Greg great video but I need your help. I bought 2 maxx air deluxe fans and the instructions say say to cut an opening of 400x400 mm( k140 model) but have measured the receiving flange and its only 355mmx355 should I cut my roof to the flange size as 400mmx400mm will be to big or have I got wrong size fans ....please help as I am ready to install 2 fans
@GregVirgoe Жыл бұрын
The fans are the same size. The thing that’s different is the size of the flange. You can order a 355 flange or 400 flange. Check which one you have ordered as that will give you the answer to the hole you need to cut. Come back if still stuck and I’ll try help more.

@@GregVirgoe cheers Greg I think i sorted it now, it' s because the flange that goes on the roof has a raised bit that goes in the cut hole (which won't because like the sprinter the crafter roof is not flat ) that's why I have to cut hole to 400x400mm . Phew!! panic over thanks for getting back to me Greg ....You the man!!! I have followed your sprinter build from the start its inspired me to do my build . Thank you, thank you.

@@clasrobinson6544 it dies sound like you have the 400 hole flange. It has a series of raised squares around the hole then the flat flange beyond that. You would be right to then cut a larger hole 👍🏼😃

Thank you for such great feedback. I just checked out your BMS video as I was only yesterday looking at Valance Lithium batteries that have a BMS system you can hook up to a laptop via an RS483 to USB connection. What make are your batteries?
@EatSleepVan7 жыл бұрын
The batteries are by Boston Power, although they are generally not available to consumers. They're also Lithium Ion, I would recommend anyone goes with Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFeP04) instead in a van, much safer if anything goes wrong, and more commonly used. I still recommend a BMS with them. I've got another video on the batteries as well. A built in BMS in each battery makes sense, as long as the batteries are the right voltage and thus are then in parallel. Otherwise you'll need to balance the batteries too.

I find your videos very good and your work methods professional. I was wondering about the ridges in the roof and how to accommodate them. Could you list what you ordered from fantastic fans, what was the model details and number, is the transparent lid additional? Thank you
@GregVirgoe6 жыл бұрын
Hello Mike @ 0:20 I tell you what the model number is. The clear lid came as standard you can also get a darker blue tinted cover. 👍🏼

Thanks , Yes I missed that, but when I went to the URL they all seemed to have non transparent tops. I'm converting a Welfare wagon, 2013 Sprinter 310 so most of the facilities are already installed, except roof ventilation, and beds. One issue is that it already has a liner and I'm concerned about if there is any insulation, and removal and replacement of the fabric liner. Finally, I was really pleased to find the front passenger seat kit you featured in another video, I had heard one was available but so far hadn't found a supply. I haven't watched all your videos but will continue to view them as you do a really good job. We went to Italy this summer in a hired camper van and now have the bug, just in time for retirement.Regards & Thanks Mike Barry

Hello Mike, are you in the uk and is it a clear one that you are after? What type of van do you have please? Cheers
@mikebarry38796 жыл бұрын
Yes we live in Northampton, I think that a clear lid is our preferred choice, Our van is a 2013 310 Sprinter

Excellent video, thanks a lot for sharing. I have a question though - aren't you worried about the screws you added at the end - the debree they've created while going through steel will rust, won't it? I am wondering if I should draw the holes first.

Really helpful thanks. Only question is which type of Sika - 512 is air cure by moisture in the air and will not cure if it is too deep. It seems that Sikalastomer 710 Butyl sealant might be better for the seal but not as an adhesive?

After you finished cutting the roof out then wiped it down ?? Then, when you put your head through the roof, the roof profile had changed ???

Hiya! Following your guide now. Not sure if you know..... but how long does silkaflex take the cure. If its going to rain and I cover it with tape/plastic bag will it still cure?
@GregVirgoe4 жыл бұрын
Bellina Fiorelli it will generally be cured by the next day. Colder weather will make the time longer.
