Greetings from Colorful Colorado. I've had to completely rebuild the aft 3 feet of a conventional travel trailer (bath/shower area) due to roof leak water damage, and I've done two cargo trailer conversions to campers. When I need to glue a piece of material to a wall, as in your shower build, I have found a pressure sensitive adhesive works well. You trowel the material onto the solid surface, (using a fine tooth trowel, 3/8 max) let it get tacky (the longer it air dries, the stickier it gets) then simply press your surface material into place. I'm not familiar with the adhesive you were using, and it might be great...but when you trowel on the pressure sensitive adhesive there are no air gaps, and it's not ever going anywhere. Warning, when you start to apply your cover sheet, make sure everything is lined up, because once you start to adhere it, it's like contact cement and is very difficult to adjust.

@@RustyCas999 My van build has been a work in progress, expensive non-budget friendly project. It has also been coupled with huge life altering events. Unlike a lot of people who have documented their progress from start to finish I started with still images but soon left that behind in favour of doing a completed video and explanation. I will say that no two DIY van conversions will be the same. When my van is completed there will be no other like it. Just the same as Greg's Sprinter build it's totally unique and took hours of work in completion. At this very point due to a family medical problem my van is about 75% completed, I need to finish it but doubt I'll ever use it for its intended purpose.

A proper home has a toilet and shower. A lot of builds don't have this, even my little campervan has a toilet and shower and I'd miss it if it wasn't there. A shower inside is not so important in really hot climates but why not fit one anyway if building a toilet cubicle, even if a bucket of water and battery operated shower head can be used in it to save expense if it's out of one's budget. I see people have portaloos under seats and hidden in small cupboards but privacy is important I think plus the fact it won't feel like you're sh**ing or pi**ing in your kitchen lol, but seriously. Can't wait until van tour vid!!!

See this video for full details kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKS0m4aaZptla6s Re the tray, I can let you into a secret. I put a square bit of wood in first and there was a gap so that led me to think it must be designed with a slope in mind. Nice job, Greg. One thing I'm having a hard time finding in any video where there is a hole drilled in the van floor, is the proper way to prevent corrosion in the hole and how to properly seal it from under the van. Would love to know how you did that.
@GregVirgoe5 жыл бұрын
Hello Ian, cut a hole just slightly largr than your drop out vent or pipe etc, file any rough edges off of the cut edge, paint with hammerite to seal the raw metal edges. Place your pipe or drop out vent inthe hole and seal all around the top and underside with sikaflex 512. After it had cured I did spray the underside with waxoyl but that was only for added protection.

Hi Greg, could you clarify something for me please. I need to purchase a shower kit (head, etc.), and i find mixed reviews and opinions whether "normal" showers would work with electric pumps or not. In theory, when the thumb lever is released the water is shut off. I read reviews that say for pumped showers where the pump is not pressure sensitive, this means the pump continues to try and pump water but without water flowing. This risks damaging the pump motor and blowing the unit. However some pumped showers are regulated by pressure - in circumstances where the water is stopped from flowing, the pump switches off. (I will be using the Shurflo pump you recommend.) let's clear this up once and for all: do we need to buy the "electric pump convertible motorhome showers" (as usual, priced way over the "normal' shower kits), or will these "traditional" showers work just fine. As I could not find link to what shower kit/head you recommend, this is the one i am considering getting: www.amazon.co.uk/Aizhy-Stainless-Bathroom-Portable-Personal/dp/B07F7Z27W9/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=handheld+bidet+spray+kit&qid=1590128462&s=diy&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExWUtJMUI4WE1RVFNXJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTQ0OTk3MlJOMUE3RDg1SjcxViZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMzQ3NDgwMU5ZU01HTlgzQVRMNiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= thanks for your input on this!!

Now you have used your van for a while, if you did another build would you put in a shower and toilet ? Sprinters are high topped vans and I'm a short arse of 5' 7" so I was thinking that under that shower tray could a 3 inch deep bowl be fitted to really get the water out faster. Maybe I'm over thinking it. I like a power shower is that possible? I find power showers are shorter as it is more efficient of getting you clean in a shorter time, use less water and power possibly too. Also on the Fiat would it be impossible to add a shower/loo cubical? But I'm still not sure what I want. I only have a basic license so won't be able to go for the bigger vans, unless I take the test for a bus and then the build takes on a whole new turn. I had looked at bus conversions, especially the minibus type used in villages or by special schools. Before I start parting with my hard earned, I'm really going to need to know what I want. I have lived in caravans before - statics and tow away's, I don't like low ceilings or pokey rooms. But I have learnt from camping that there are options, like large canvass extensions - more than just an awning extend your living space a lot. A log heater like I have for my hot tent creates a warm outer room. It's definitely on my build plans. I've even considered the Kei-Car vans from Japan - great for cost and they fit nicely down tiny country roads, especially out in the sticks were I am. All good advice though Greg, thanks.

We don't use the shower in our van we always find other options which is why i'm not fitting one in the new van, its just too much hassle.

Hi mate, when you said about the blade on your saw only being exposed enough to go through your board this creates more resistance/work for the motor as you have more teeth in contact with the work piece. The saw will cut best with the blade fully exposed, max cut depth, because less teeth will be in contact with the work piece resulting in less friction for the motor. Cheers 👍

Hello Tim, on the circular saw I used a Freud 80T blade and for the jigsaw I use T101BR blades which cut on the downstroke so you have you face side up. Here is a link amzn.to/3O05gRZ. I use masking tape on both sides to help prevent chip out and don’t go too fast let the blade do the work take your time and you’ll get good results. You mentioned that your shower pan cracked as did others. Do you think it could have been installed differently to avoid the cracking? Were you able to repair it? Or did you replace the pan and if so with what? Thank you for all you've done for the community. Cheers!

I don’t think there was anything I could have done to stop it cracking. It was way too thin and not suitable for the job. Taken out and new one hand made out of timber and fibreglass over top.

Have you done a video of this updated shower tray Greg? Would love to see what you’ve done

Hi, noticed the toilette cassette is facing the inside of the van instead of having facing the van panel with a little door when empty is necessary - of course this will save from an extra cut through the van side - I am personally having a dilemma, not sure what to go for
@GregVirgoe5 жыл бұрын
Pasquale Gatto watch my first France video and you will see how the small door works. Cutting and sealing a hole for door at the height is a nightmare as the van sides are not straight and it goes through the plastic trim. Difficult to do well.

Greg I love your videos. What kind of toilet did you put in the shower area? and what are the dimensions of the inside of the shower?
@GregVirgoe6 жыл бұрын
I used a Thetford C200CS cassette toilet which has an electric flush and is connected to my pressurised water supply off the main water tank. The waste goes into a sealed cassette that can be emptied at many sluice services on campsites or bespoke machines installed all over Europe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqbdZ52dbtyDbMU The internal dimensions of the shower cubicle are 950mm x 750mm at the base. It tapers slightly as you go up because the van is curved.

Hi Greg, what model of bathroom shower fan are you using Expelair seem to be AC motor which will have a problem with working on DC. Thanks
@GregVirgoe5 жыл бұрын
Kronos G yeah it’s 12v AC so it has a transformer in the garage running off my 230v feeds on the control panel.

just bought a van with this installation. Thetford toilet and shoer tray from jackson leisure. Aparantly Theford dont make shower trays so these are cheap products manufactured by who knows. My Tray has multiple cracks - You tube seems to be full of reports of these so called Thetford trays cracking due to being low quality and super thin. Does anyone have a solution for repairing or covering a cracked tray or is the only answer to rip the lot out and try and find a decent option? is your 2018 tray still intack Greg?

Hi Greg I'd like to ask about your extractor fan in the shower, is it a 12 volt and did you wire it straight to your light switch or did you wire it up separately. Tia 👍 👍

Hi Greg, am converting a Sprinter in Ontario, Canada and have very much enjoyed (and benefitted from) your expertise. I was particularly interested in your shower install, but was hoping to see what the drain looked like from under the van - is there another video in which I can view it. Thanks!

The build videos are arranged into one playlist that you can scroll through. Here is the grey waste video for you kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHzSnYOehst7grM

@@GregVirgoe Thanks - I assume the shower drain was sealed with mastic like the sink drain? Or does it take a large nut as it seemed to be threaded?

Hi Greg, loving your videos they are sooo helpful! Just wondering if you have any advice or videos regarding the installation of the bathroom extractor? Thank you
@GregVirgoe4 жыл бұрын
Clair Sulley no I didn’t do a video of that because it wasn’t my best choice. So didn’t want to recommend it. I ended up putting a 12v AC fan in running off a mains transformer so I have to use my inverter. It’s not a good way of doing it and would be better if can find a 12v DC fan but not many nice ones about. Sorry that doesn’t help you much.
@clairsulley88184 жыл бұрын
@@GregVirgoe thanks for the reply, I'm also having trouble finding a 12v DC fan, want to avoid having the use the transformer? 🤔

Just a quick one, when you hole sawed through the Celotex, did you foil tape the Celotex or is that not needed?

I'm not sure a shower will stay watertight at the joins with the movement in a van. A self contained unit of some sort might be a better bet. But that's just a hunch on my part.
