Welding the removable Aluminium Bed Frames and fitting in the van.
In this video, we look at the new removable bed frame design and head out of the workshop to meet Ged Thompson at his metal workshop to watch him TIG weld the Aluminium Bed Frames.
Then it's back to the snow-covered van, where we install them.
These frames can be removed to allow full-height access to the rear 6 feet of the van when loading motorbikes or other large goods.

There seems to be a bit of concern about solid bed boards. I've had various different mattresses on solid MDF bed boards for many years without a single issue. We always "Turn the bed down" every day to air it correctly. We always flip and rotate the mattress regularly to ensure even wear and use. Or maybe it's because we're just not very sweaty people 😊 So I won't be making Swiss cheese out of these bed boards, but feel free to do that in your own build if you think it's essential. Thanks for watching.

ah , the contentious issue of whether to install a solid or slatted bed base. if you consider that he is building a garage beneath the bed, then it makes really good sense to have a solid base. the garage then becomes completely sealed off from the main living quarters and thus serves well as its intended purpose suggests. a garage ! if he ever wanted to store a can of fuel, or even keep a scooter in the back or anything damp from a hike or something, he can be sure that no fumes or odours will transfer to living area. a solid base base over a garage area has got to be the best way, surely.

Well, it's not really air tight so it wouldn't be sealed off as there are gaps between the door and back of bed. I pretty much have the same bed build in my own van.

I bet your way of building a van will be referenced some day as the "Greg-Virgoe-Style", where every Sprinter build has to be compared with! There was no time where something was looking improvised or where the question "how he can he do that like this??!" came to mind! Simply brillant! Thanks for sharing your craftsmanship with us! :-)

Great video, My wife and I sold our house in Miami Florida and have been living in an Airstream towed with a Sprinter 3500xd 4x4 diesel dually with a Harley Davidson Fat Boy in the back, The Sprinter is the garage and I am building out for the third time. Having rhino coating applied to the roof and interior floor on Monday, will have upholstery shop install custom headliner and vinyl wall coverings on Jan. 3rd, this being done to repair damage from a hailstorm and resulting interior leak. We have been to 47 of the 48 continental states so far. Really enjoyed your video.

Hi All.. We have done a lot of research on beds in the last few years due to the fact we quit working while our daughter was at drama school, and have travelled extensively around Europe in our 5.4m van.. I temporarily installed a fixed/raised bed like Greg's using a wooden frame and plywood base, to save us having to construct the bed each night and also to provide us maximum storage space underneath (we had 2 x bench seats that pulled together transversely across the rear before).. We have tried various combinations of foam mattress, blow up air beds but have never managed to match the comfort of the original pull together slatted bases.. A recent visit to ikea to purchase a new mattress for our bed at home brought some interesting conclusions.. The mattress we tried at the store and purchased, never felt as comfortable when we slept on it at home.. A recent visit back to ikea made us realise that the mattress we tried was resting on one of their slated bases but at home our bed base was solid ! We purchased the slatted system in question and hey presto "Perfect Slumber" Im now trying to configure the same system into our van :)) As Greg has said I think it is down to the preference of the individuals what works for them.. Thanks Ian

This conversion van your building will have your name "Greg Virgoe" on it in a well documented form, making it an "item" of great value. This will be akin to the American slang "the real McCoy" which came about because of a "continuous oiler, of quality construction and design" (invented by a man named named "McCoy") that ensured quality lubrication of the bearings in a Locomotive wheels. People began to demand "The real McCoy" in their product purchases. Likewise I see quality in your work with this RV conversion and think it likely people will call your style of building "The Virgoe technique or style" of quality RV conversion. I enjoy your humble approach to your work as much as your mastery of your craft. Thank you sir

Awesome videos and everything is thought out and logical backed up with actual facts rather than many other van life videos that seem to be based on optimism and guess work. Hi Greg, Thank you for all your terrific videos on Sprinter Van conversion. I love watching them for enjoyment and information. I'm a little handy building my house and in my high school machine shop, and I really like these subjects. I'm hoping to build a Sprinter van (stealthy, if possible) that can fit a Harley FX under the bed. This is still a dream and I'm trying to learn some basic design skills before committing. Either way, I feel intellectually filled by your videos. Thanks again. Bob Mackin

That's an ambitious bike to put in a sprinter. It's very big and I'm guessing heavy too. You may want to look for a dual rear wheel version that can carry 5T

Very helpful reply - thanks. The FX weighs 535 lbs/242.672 Kg, but it's very low. I'm 5' 8" and can sit with both feet flat on the pavement. I may have to shop for handlebars, which I like low anyway.

Greg - I've been in a caravan! A mate bought a small electrician's van last week, and is converting to a camper. I'll be his sidekick for some of the build. So I went looking and found your series. Your vids are well produced, excellent commentary throughout, with no bs nonsense! I'm prepared to make mistakes on my mate's van, and get it right when I build mine 😜 keep the vids coming, and looking forward to seeing the end result. I like design, as it can transport motorbikes. Very handy for my R1200GSA, saves towing the bike for the runabout.

This bed frame seems to be a big point of concern. I have seen two inch holes drilled in platforms like a big Swiss cheese and thought it was just to cut down on weight, learn so much just reading comments from others. Though reflecting on fact I’ve seen many platform beds where the mattress lays on mdf frame with out concerns?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 6 жыл бұрын
Dani Adams, I've had different mattresses on solid bed frames for 17 yrs and never had a single problem. Maybe people don't turn their bed down everyday to air it properly and flip the mattress regularly. I'm not reducing the strength of these boards by making look like Swiss cheese.

Something about living with any kind of internal combustion engine vehicle inside your home with you, especially in a small space, you want to make sure you replace your petrol cap with one that is sealed. And they have these special zip-up covers for motorcycles for storing them indoors, inside of your home. This keeps the smells from permeating all of your indoor wood and cloth, etc. Because once that gasoline and exhaust stench seeps into those porous materials, you will never get it out and it will always smell that way.

Greg I love your style and attention to detail. I always hesitate to give constructive criticism because you know exactly what you are doing and why. I was going to comment on the lack of under mattress ventilation but that has been well covered by others. Not sure of you are familiar with YT channel Sail Life - but he tried the Trefoli under mattress support system without any measurable success - and it proved not to be particularly durable. A cheaper solution may be some way of temporarily raising the mattress while it is not in active use so that the underside has an opportunity to dry out during the day.

Hi Norman, I’m always open to any comments as long as they’re not rude 😀 My other half is very OCD about things like this and she has chosen a mattress that can be flipped and turned. She always turns them regular and airs the bed every day. We’ve had a solid divan base for years and never had any problems with mattresses.

Nice build! The issue of solid or slats, has to do with a heated space on top side and a non heated underneath ( garage space ) It has to do with the mattress acting as insulation, and the need of a vapor barrier. A suspended bed should not have moisture issues, because it is the same shared space.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
Michael O'Hara, our garage space is heated and we have a mattress ventilator product called Airmat that keeps the mattress 1/2" off the solid bed base. We have had solid bed bases in all our homes and never had any issues with damp or mould.

Hi, thank you so much. Our bed is 1800x1750 and we will sleep lengthways not really wide enough in the sprinter to sleep widthways. I tried it for a couple of nights and ended up with really painful knees because you can't stretch your legs out. Thanks for watching.

doing a good job there mate, one thing, you need to cut air holes in the ply boards, i use something like a 30- 40mm hole cutter, you need air flow around and under the mattress to stop it getting damp from perspiration,

ahh, i see everyone else has asked the same question, ill shut up, and keep enjoying your high standard build, . just commenting for the benifit of DIY viewers with less money, . i doubt cutting a few vent holes will weaken it with all that aluminum framing, why buy an air flow product, costing money and adding weight, when cutting holes is free and saves weight? i love saving weight, but i love saving money moor!!

Thanks Greg, another down to basics video. I dont know if you've ever had a van/motorhome before but if you haven't it is a absolute nightmare trying to make a bed while kneeling on it, your wife wont like it. It's not too late to fit two singles which will allow you to stand on the floor (just about) to make the beds. You may be able to have the beds fold up the side of the van when you load the bike, just a thought.

Hi Keith, there are two problems with your comment. 1. That's really sexist, assuming the women are going to be the ones making the beds. Come out of the dark ages. 2. We are not married, so why would I want to sleep in a single bed, with a gorgeous girlfriend in my van? Seriously though, with the rear doors open two can make the bed in seconds without climbing on it. Thanks for your comment, it made me smile.

You could always add the Froli system on top of the boards? This would give ventilation and allow your mattress to be a little thinner? I have this by the way - very good product (mine is the Froli Star). Great video as always.

Excellent video, as usual. A simple little question, why not use existing holes (5:26) located 2 or 3 inches lower? This would avoid making new holes for installing the aluminum angle. Thank you for this beautiful series of educational video. I am strongly inspired by it. I start the conversion of my sprinter 144 in two weeks. Looking forward

I have to agree with other comments, this is best van build I’ve ever seen on KZbin. Re the plywood on the frame, did you think about putting air holes in it to allow moisture to escape from the bottom of the mattress, or would this effect the integrity of the frame?

Loads of great tips in your videos, thanks. How is this affected by thermal bridging, as the L bracket is connected directly to the van with metal to the frame wouldn't it get cold, particulalry in winter and create condensation on the bracket.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 6 жыл бұрын
I have applied the foil bubble wrap over the whole wall, then a sheet of 9mm marine plywood then attached the aluminium bed bracket. The only bridging part is the bolt which I have fitted with plastic caps. Wood is a very good thermal insulator.

I'm about to re-cut the floor ply because I'm unhappy with how badly I did it. Then finish the floor, put the ceiling in (just some thin ply with some LED lights). Very soon I'll be cutting gas vent holes (I've also bought the Gaslow refillable system which I think you have) for the bottle and the Propex heater.

Vandemonium I've watched sail life since day one. It's great for anyone who likes diy and tinkering with boats. A lot of things that apply to yachts also apply to campers. Wonderful to see the interior components start to take shape! Have you considered adding a spring system (like the Froli sleep system that the Winnebago's use) for added comfort? (Though that might add unwanted bulk, especially if you already have a comfy mattress). I'm looking forward to seeing the rivnut process next time. Do you have a goal date for completing the van? Excellent as always, and glad to see you're having fun with it!

I had to look them up but remember seeing them on some vans at the motorhome show at NEC. They look like a fabulous idea. Not sure I can spare the loss of height. We have selected a decent mattress for our initial trips. Ordered a more heavy duty Rivnut tool and requested a return for the other one so that will be here Wednesday latest. I plan to take the van to Maker Central first weekend in May, not very much time and still loads to do. I've been collecting some outtakes while filming the build for a post-build "Gag Reel" compilation :D Thank you for your support and great feedback

Each panel measures 1750mm long by 600mm wide, so the bed ends up being 1750 wide x 1800mm long. Approx 6'x6' foot square. So you could pretty much sleep whatever way round you want to. Thank you for watching.

Just a thought. As you have used 12mm ply to cover the bed frames, the surface is strong. When loading the bike(s) the bed will not be in place, so why not use one of the frames as a loading ramp (approx. 21 degrees). The ply will take the weight of the bike and rider, but the alu. frame won't (not enough 2nd Moment of Area i.e. section too weak). My calcs say that by welding another piece of 25 x 25 x 3 alu. to the underside of each of the three frame rails (leaving space at each end for the van's side supports), it will be able to take a Bonnie with rider. Only problem is, what is your partner going to say about the dirt....?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 6 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting solution, you've obviously put a lot of thought into it. I would only need to double up one of the frames and when the bed is built this could be the middle frame thus also strengthening the bed. Can you work out what weight this aluminium would support over a 1700 span? 25x25x3 is the right size
@normanbox6657
@normanbox6657 6 жыл бұрын
I'll do the calcs again and get back to you. I used a span of 1780 first time.
@normanbox6657
@normanbox6657 6 жыл бұрын
I did the calcs, using the properties for grade 6082T6 (Yield Strength = 170MPa, Tensile Strength = 260MPa) and the load of a Bonnie with rider. The existing frame has a maximum stress of 233MPa, so will permanently bend. Fastening a second 25 square tube 1.5 m long symetrically to the underside of each tube with staggered intermittent single V butt welds along both sides will reduce the maximum stress to 77MPa, giving a deflection of 10.3mm in the middle and no permanent deformation.
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Norman, that’s very interesting. What if you are standing to one side of the ramp so only the 170kg of the Bonneville is on the ramp? The overall length is 2.1m and the ramp is 1.8m so only one wheel will be on the ramp at any one time. So roughly half the load, slightly more on the rear maybe? How would that look like? Cheers
@normanbox6657
@normanbox6657 6 жыл бұрын
Aha. At that mass it is a real T120R Bonnie, not a modern T120. Overall length is not important, but the wheelbase (where the forces act) is . For a T120R that is 55.2" = 1403mm. I'll check those out. Cheers
