Gremlins were an actual bit of folklore that originated among aircrew during World War II to explain mechanical problems in aircraft, and its indicated that Murray Futterman was an airman during the War (most likely a gunner on a bomber, based on his cap and jacket). Probably the most famous depiction from the War era was the Bugs Bunny short Falling Hare, but they turn up in a variety of media since then. Another well-known example is the Twilight Zone story Terror at 20,000 Feet, starring a pre-Star Trek William Shatner as a man who spots a gremlin on the wing of a passenger airliner and is trying to convince everyone it's real before the plane crashes. The original script for the movie was A LOT darker, with the mom being killed and the Gremlins throwing her head at Billy. Mrs. Deagle: And nothing of value was lost. Let's all just admit it: The story about Kate's father is dark, but it's also FUNNY because of how absurd it is. The studio heads didn't "get" it, but director Joe Dante fought for it because of how perfectly it sums up the film itself: Dark and horrifying, but also funny in its ridiculousness.

I was a kid when this came out and remember having Gizmo and Spike stuffed animals given as gifts, they are both super iconic haha. This is far more entertaining than a lot of modern movies and is always worth a rewatch around this time.

@@Zralock79 I'm certain that Chris Columbus is insisting on practical effects to drive the action in Gremlins 3, so at least there's that as a positive. Practical effects have largely proven far more effective than CGI and AI, a powerful example being the use of practicals and "retro-future" tech in Alien Romulus.

I like to imagine that every gremlin that was cosplaying a human had killed a human wearing those things and acting like that. That, and that dual wielding Billy's mom would have taken out Stripe at the YMCA before things got out of hand had Billy not sidelined the party's assassin build.

Hello Dasha!😊 "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" (1990) is an even sillier film. They really take it to the next level. Definitely a fun watch if you are a gremlins fan.😉 Yeah, I think with gas powered chainsaws you have to add a special oil like with mopeds and scooters. Meet the Feebles is a must watch. They learned from watching television, which is what they were mimicking in the bar. Also Mike from Breaking Bad was the young cop. It always made me laugh when Spike blew his nose on the curtains before jumping out the window at Billy's house.

No computer effects were used here. You can only imagine how much work it must have been to make all the puppets and build them to work with radio control. Some scenes in the film only last a few seconds and during this time the mogway's eyes and eyelids change and the rest of his face changes expression.

Not one of Spielberg's best projects but it's a ok B comedy/horror movie. I saw it once in my early teens and never really felt the need to see it again. The sequel is more of the same but sillier and louder.

I remember my mom took me to this movie as a kid. I was in awe of Gizmo and wanted one. The movie had a PG rating. Lots of mothers protested afterwards and demanded the movie be given a R rating. I mean cutting a head off with a sword. Killing ond in tge mixer and blowing one up in the microwave. The voice of Gizmo was Howie Mandell. There is a Gremlins 2 the new batch you should check out

I hope you do Gremlins 2 as well & that one you can watch anytime, it's not a Christmas movie. And it's also more comedic over the top & technically not as great as the 1st movie, but it's still really good & very funny, and it's also very creative in some scenes & on the Gremlins themselves 😉🙂 It's technically a Joe Dante movie, Spielberg only produced the movie. Though it's still has some of his touches here & there, and he even toned down some of the original darker & more horror concept on this movie. Normally I would hate that, but this is one of the few movies where its changes still worked & originally the dog was going to be killed, but that one got changed which I'm all for because I hate that god d*mn cliché in horror movies! Nobody wants to see a dog die, we wanna see human characters, especially the douchey ones, die! And the writer of this movie is Chris Colombus, who directed Home Alone 1 & 2 and Harry Potter 1 & 2. Mrs. Deagle is more like the a$$hole boss from It's A Wonderful Life. The Grinch at least redeemed himself & learned the true meaning of Christmas, those other characters did not & Deagle got a deserved end 😈😜 Singing carols I'm pretty sure is mostly an American thing, we don't do that here in Sweden either. I could be wrong though... Well, this is the same kid who fought mobsters in The Goonies, fought Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th part 4 & vampires in Lost Boys 😉 Get well & Merry Christmas, Dasha 🎄🎅🎁❤️

Gremlins came into being during WWII. Pilots would tell the mechanics there was a problem with the aircraft, but they could never find it. So they started say it was a gremlin messing the plane. There is a Twilight zone episode, "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" shows a gremlin messing the with the plane.

When the movie released, a novel version was released too. The novel added the perspective of Gizmo and Stripe. Gizmo was an alien of a highly intelligent species. The reason it seems like Gizmo (and the gremlins) are speaking gibberish is because actually their brains work so fast that they speak really fast. To speak our language (which they understand) is a struggle for them to speak slower for us to understand them.
