Here we go guys, we finally kick off Atari 5200 reviews to the channel with the movie based game, Gremlins! Is this a worthy addition to your Atari collection, or is it yet another bad licensed video game? Find out in the video that should be playing now!
Here's our review scale for anybody who is curious:
5 out of 5 - Must own!
4 out of 5 - Highly recommended
3 out of 5 - Recommended
2 out of 5 - Not Recommended
1 out of 5 - Stay far far away!

The Atari Network has 3 goals (besides entertainment) that I hope embodies everything the channel does:
1. Bring awareness to Atari, especially the often ignored Tramiel and 7800 era
2. Make sure the hardworking people both new and old (from the old guard at Atari corp to the new developers keeping Atari alive) get the recognition that they deserve for their hard work
3. Preserve the history of Atari in the video game hobby so that it survives long after us
Check out my written reviews and all of Vinnies 20 years of hard work here

Thanks for watching and please subscribe. It does way more than you'll ever know for me.

This game always reminded me of a cross between berserk and food fight, with a little bit of robotron mixed in. It's a decent game, but probably the best looking game on the console

That's a pretty good description honestly except instead of shooting you have a sword. That's their little twist I guess

Thanks for the review. I would have loved to play this one. I definitely did not expect the unique mix of game play. Looks like one of the better movie related game for it’s time.

They added a lot of interactivity into the environments that I wasn't expecting. I wish we had gotten a version for the 7800.

Great review, Jon. I added Gremlins to my 5200 collection a couple of weeks ago, and it’s good to know that it merited a 4-controller rating. I had never seen any game play and had no idea what kind of game it was. I did read on Wikipedia that Gremlins was the last game released for the SuperSystem back in the day. Coming in at the tail end of the console’s life, I guess the developers got good with producing great graphics. I also got the movie a month ago. Despite being an 80s kid, I never watched the movie.

I hope you enjoy the game as much as I did. I think it's a solid game and the interactions with the environment was a cool touch. It can be difficult to play with the stock controller, I'm still not used to the joystick not centering itself and sometimes I just walk into an enemy when I otherwise wouldn't. But that's more of a flaw of the controller than the game. I haven't seen the movie in probably over 20 years but I never thought it was bad back then. Just wasn't my thing I guess. I hope you enjoy it, maybe I'll have to rewatch the movie again soon...

I love your title card for the video. 😊 Great review. I'm not a fan of the movies, but this game looked good for its time.

I’ve heard this game was mail order only released in 86, and some 5200s have different boxes from 86 too. I wonder how much money this game made?
@TheAtariNetwork

I doubt much money was made. I couldn't find anything about the mail order but I'm going to do research on a bunch of things over the holidays to be better informed. I'll add this to the list to dive deeper into.

@@TheAtariNetworkbasically Atari Corp tried to make money off finished stuff they inherited. They actually never stopped selling games and reprinted the supposed awful and crash inducing pac man in 85 and ET in 86.

@@GTV-Japan oh yeah anything they thought they could make money off of without having to put in time and pay developers to work on they put out. The software was completed so they felt it was minimal risk and overhead and they weren't wrong I guess...

Hey is the 5200 on the same level as the 7800? The graphics and bits the same? Also the 5200 seems like it has a better audio chip. Great vid as always and btw did u enjoy your thanksgiving?

I'm not a huge tech guy but here's my understanding of the 2 consoles. They both had the same CPU but the 5200 had a built in pokey chip for sound that was far beyond the stock 7800. The 5200 has similar specs to Atari 8 bit computers and I heard it might've had more RAM than a 7800 but I haven't verified. The 7800 had a GPU that was much stronger than the 5200. What all this means is the 5200 had better sound, and 7800 was technically capable of better graphics. It's believed that people got much closer to utilizing the 5200s full power but 7800 didn't have much that tapped into it's full capabilities until recently. If anybody knows anything more or if I got anything wrong please share but that's what I heard and believe to this point. Hope that answers your question!

The 7800 had better graphics than 5200 but the same sound capabilities as the 2600.

One of the 5200's better better games. The sprite work looks almost next gen. Not a Gremlins fan but don't hate it either. It was a good movie but nothing I long for....well...the gremlin in the microwave was cool but.....lol

I'd be happy if ATARI repurposed the game using a different I.P., and made a new 7800 game with added pokey chip in the cart for the 2600+.
I got an Atari 5200 Cheap on eBay! But Does it Work?
