Margot Robbies role in this film as a major producer was heavily underplayed here. Her production company led this- and it's massive!

I was thinking the same thing. Yes it’s greta’s film in the sense that she did direct and write the screenplay and had a huge role but without margot as producer there would be no barbie at all and margot was instrumental at every step along the way.

Greta Gerwig is literally living my dream life, lol. If it wasn't such a hard spot to get into, I would have tried. Film school is VERY competitive, and becoming a director is literally the hardest job to get. If it weren't for her getting into acting, who knows where she would have gone! She and Kate McKinnon being dorm-mates is the best thing I've ever heard, by the way. Totally makes sense.

I think she was born to be a filmmaker and a writer. It’s her calling and I believe she would have found a way somehow. I mean for a while she was doing low budget indies it’s awesome that she’s been able to become such a big name. Not to disagree that it’s difficult af to get into the industry and especially get into directing.

About a year ago, I never imagined myself being hyped for a Barbie movie! And I say it as a 30 year old dude who feels a need of razzle dazzle once in a while of the feminine touch. It was Margot Robbie’s first look of her in her car at the 2022 CinemaCon, streaming Lady Bird and the teaser last December that encouraged me to give this movie a chance! Especially with the craftsmanship and the hard work Greta put into the script. I expected more of a Barbie Ken love story (call me old fashioned if you like). But when the Ken’s take over, the plot finds its footing. I was ready for I’m Just Ken but just not the context. I was initially excited for Ryan Gosling as Ken more than Margot Robbie as Barbie. But I came out a fan of both. And the opening weekend audience at my screening was the most enthusiastic I’ve been in since Avengers Endgame! I sure hope Margot, Ryan and America get award nominations this upcoming winter! I’m 30, young & single and Ken-enough.

Barbie indeed DOES have a character and DOES have a backstory. Witness all the hardcover books about her and her life in the town of Willows that were out in bookstores in the 1960s. There were a dozen of those books. These director(s) clearly did not seek these things out or they would have found them. Nothing had to be "made up", it was all already there for them!!!!! Ken, Allan and even Skipper's backstories were also in those Random House books.

Gerwig is quickly up-shifting into my own personal cosmology of truly great living directors that include Nolan, PT Anderson, Wes Anderson, the Coen Brothers, Villeneuve, and Fincher. I've never seen an adaptation of Little Women that was more alive and immediate than hers--it was like being inside a popcorn machine with that cast and its dialogue. It was hard for me at first to understand the concept of a Barbie movie but the teaser won me with the humor (and reference) and the first trailer got me invested with the sense of imagination and direction that this could go. So many great messages, and so funny, and so touching. It The film itself has SO many movie references and I kind of viewed it as a dirty-bomb version of Everything Everywhere All at Once, even thought this one got so much more at the box office than EEAAO. Great writing, great directing, and it sounds like she knows how to keep their actors and production crew up and on top of things based on the recent Actors on Actors video with Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie: dance parties, film viewings, and general great vibes on set. She has a great career in front of her.

People still fight over that this movie was not feminist or daring enough, or it was too daring and too man-hating, but honestly it was just a fun entertaining well-written movie, I liked it, saw it twice in cinemas with some friends, had a great time, laughed a lot and felt emotional, and thats really all I can ask for a movie-going experience. No director or producer is ever going to make the perfect feminist movie or perfect at representing women or perfectly balancing what men and women like while also being progressive etc etc etc. But the fact that so many people went to watch this, talked about, enjoyed it, is exemplary by itself. Modern cinema, and its place in pop-culture, is on a downslope thanks to studios, and there's really no preventing that, so it was fun to at least have a nice last hurrah with Barbenheimer before all movies just become another form of content.

Gone are the days of Mike Wallace and Morley Safer, asking reasonable yet hard edged questions, while citing credible evidence, that most interviewers shy away from. This whole interview felt like an Access Hollywood piece, full of fake laughs and phony smiles. Ask one question about man hating in Barbie while not providing examples to give the question more weight, accept Greta’s weak generic answer…now back to how the woman is a genius and keep a two-shot of her timid supportive husband to showcase that she’s not your typical castrating humorless feminist.

Love this sister! A liberator for the Barbies AND the Kens. Brought tears for both sexes… for a reason. Luckily, my daughter thought what would move me the most, the “speech”. No, it was the beauty revealed in the “grandmothers” in the film…Those who held the wisdom, silently, fully aware of what is, indeed, beautiful.
