I appreciate how much detail you go into on Tolkien's lore. It's a subject that totally deserves it. I get not everyone wants to watch long videos about these subjects but I would rather get all the details and context than watch a video that covers the whole first age in 15 minutes, so thank you. I hope you keep going.

I've been reading Tolkien avidly since around 1975 and I reckon I know most of his "histories" backwards. Listening to your well crafted summaries is absolutely delightful. Somehow you manage to juxtapose a certain levity with gravitas; perfect for the good professor's writings.

So since finishing your first set of videos last year I went off saddened that there was going to be a break, re-read the Silmarillion seeing as you had helpfully demystified it, and discovered the Prancing Pony Podcast which also covered the Silmarillion in depth. I kinda figured I'd nailed it all, but watching this has been a wonderful fresh take that only highlights things I'd overlooked. Great job! Also Rainbow Dave, your enthusiasm for this subject and world is really infectious. Keep 'em coming, I'll be watching.

Dave really digs Cirdan. I think he is one of the wisest Elves to have ever been, he just does not get enough ink for me to get a grasp on to who he really is. He is very Viking like. A mariner with a beard, who`s great skill is in the building great ships. The very beat, like the Vikings. And he had the ring of Narya , until he meets Gandalf, and sees the wisdom in Gandalf, and of his power, as he is wise to him being a Maiar. Then he gives Narya to Gandalf. Cool dude, but I wish he was more involved.

... wait, so Thingol decided to forsook Círdan but had time to relieve the surviving Laiquendi? I hope he had good reasons for it. By the way, Círdan, though we sadly do not hear him ever speak but only hear about his deeds from a distant perspective, is a well-chosen candidate for the elv you would most want to call him your friend. I read (not the direct quote, I have yet to organise myself the History of Middle-Earth series) that his crafty spirit helped the Elves to traverse what would be later called the sea of Rhûn by ship, I'd say that feat gives him some Moses-like qualities. I am also quite a fan of Thingol despite his flaws and foolish decisions which are not too few in number. When reading the Silmarillion, he was the only character that created a kingly and venerated image in my mind - proud, but for a reason. From all the tragic tales of the Silmarillion, none makes me blanch and stung like his end and the ruin of Doriath.

Hi Dave: I think a vid on the reason why the High Elves in Valinor became so great at crafting weapons in the first place, would address a query I've received from a few of JRRs fans. They didn't have much use for weapons in Aman but the Noldor, upon re-entering Beleriand were outstanding warriors. I have my own answers, as I've been studying JRRs world for close to 40 years but you have a KZbin channel, I don't, my Buddy! :)

It's because they're Elves dude, their bodies and spirits burn brighter so they engage in it's desires like sports and hunting and f ing 🤣 The Vanyar were known for making very deadly spears and absolutely obliterated everything in War of Wrath so obviously they been practicing with Uncle Manwë
@geert574
@geert574 2 жыл бұрын
And also they rejuvenate in Aman, read The Nature Of Middle-Earth, Elves child birth rate decreased every generation since Cuivinen from 6 average to 2 but once they reach Aman it picks up again, they become more vigorous and Hroä/Fëa body/mind is in tune over there, in Middle-Earth their Fëa becomes dominant leading to weariness

Extremely good video!! Next to the Noldor, the Falathrim are my favourite race. I wonder why even in Tolkien's works (and especially in secondary sources) they often count as being just a sub-group of the Sindar. Most people who play D&D and have just seen the movies probably think that Dark Elves are silver-haired, black-skinned Elves who are almost invariably evil and who worship the Spider Goddess, Lolth (the D&D version, sort of, of Ungoliantë). Those of us who have read "The Silmarillion" know them to be generally good Elves, and if they are antagonists in a story, they are more in the line of Fëanor and most of his sons: They are proud and wilful like [spoiler] Eöl, rather than brutish like Orcs or devious like the Drow.

@tolkienuntangled

The Sindar of Beleriand are at least ennobled by the Maia powers of Melian, and ruled over by a king who's beheld the light of the Trees; so I'd say yes, they're probably wiser than the Avari and Silvan, who are about as dark as dark elves can get. I guess a good comparison is Celeborn (Sindar) and Haldir (Silvan). One is clearly mightier than the other.

I say 'Alatulya meldonyar, ar hara mariessë.' Which is Quenya for something along the lines of 'welcome my friends, and live well in happiness.'

Cìrdan is NOT the only elf described as having a beard. Feanor's father-in-law, Mahtan, the most skilled craftsman of Aman was also described as wearing one as well. He was said by some "experts" on Tolkien to be one of the first of the elves to behold the light of the stars in Cuiviénen.

BLUF: Cut back on the use of "anyway." I think you are doing a great job. I wonder if you are speaking Quenya or Sindarin. There was a time in my youth that I tried to learn Quenya, but at the same time, I was trying to learn Spanish and Tagalog. I slimmed it down to just one language; that of my wife. Kumusta po Kayo? I am really enjoying your videos, as it has been about 30 yrs since I read the books. Turin Turambur has always been my favorite story. Beren and Luthien were a close second, but that story just didn't have the absolute travesty of the tale of Turin. LOTR is my third favorite story. But I stray from the real reason for this comment: You need to cut back on the word "anyway." I have heard it so many times in your videos that it has become a distraction. I am not trying to be critical, but helpful. When I hear the youth of today speak, this is what I hear, "It was like, very amazing, and like, I couldn't, like, believe, like, what I was seeing, like, it was, like, incredible." I am not saying that your narration is comparable to these young people that seem to be incapable of using that word all the time. I seriously respect and like your breakdowns, my fellow Tolkien lover. By the way, I have known about Tolkien's and Edith's gravestones for many years before you mentioned it, but I never saw to tombstones before. I thank you for that. I am going to assume that you write a script before you post a video; now all you have to do is look at every time you say "anyway" and think of any other way to transition to your next subject. You may have noticed that I used the term comparable instead of the word "like." This was an intentional example of how it is done. Just in case you are curious, BLUF is a military acronym that means: Bottom Line Up Front. To be clear, I am only trying to help. Mahal Kita.

My Brother, I apologize for the previous post. I am a functioning alcoholic, and when I have been drinking heavily, I will sometimes post longwinded rambling comments, as I may be doing now. There is a point where it is hard for me to determine. I did not mean to be arrogant, only helpful. I have watched a ton of your videos, and I really love them. I apologize if I came across as an asshole. That was not my intention.

About the children of the Noldor who traveled to Middle Earth, children who were born in Middle Earth: are they considered High Elves? Because they've obviously not experienced the light of Valinor.

.....and the legends say that in the shipyards of the Grey Havens, known also as Mithlond, in the land of Lindon dwelled Cìrdan the Shipright. Ancient of years and renowned in great deeds. CÍrdan built all the ships to return the Moriquendi and Calaquendi to the undying lands beyond the sea. He labored without complaint to help those of his kind. .....we do not know what became of Círdan. He built all of the sacred vessels but no tale tells of a time in which he strode the deck of his own. Legends say that, in the shipyards of the Grey Havens, known also as Mithlond, in the land of Lindon dwelled Cìrdan.......some voices whisper that he dwells there still.

You must avoid using "dark" Elves when metioning the Sindars. They are still part of the Eldars, togethers with the elves in Valinor. Both are Eldars. The "dark" elves are usually referred to Avari, the elves who refused the summon of the Valars and did not make the journey west

Dark elf is just a translation of Moroquendi. It refers to all elves who haven't beheld the light of Valinor, including Sindar and Nandor.
