Yeah, this guy gets it. Clean. Pure. Talented. Humble. Chops. Percussionist. Musician. Musicianship. Artist. The “artistry” is gonna be off the charts in the years to come. Drums can be mesmerizing, & it’s fun & cool to watch the guys who can shred. Cheers!, & .... ‘git some!

So insightful for any musician let alone (especially) drummers, feeling out what feels right > prescribed fundaments or forms. I can see immediately the relaxation/overall distribution of tension in the hand/wrist in your technique Vs. “wristing” it, and you can see the benefits of this. In singing, I can get caught up on placement and form which distracts from what feels right also, so it’s a great reminder to strike the right balance and not close off possibilities that feel good for your person/instrument in the song/performance. Very inspiring, thanks for the wisdom!

Been waiting on a video like this from you for a long ass time now, my man lol. You killed it here, and I am looking forward to hopefully more vids like these from you! Just hearing you describe your own thoughts that pop into your head as you're playing is so valuable to all musicians on instruments. I'm mainly a lead guitarist, but I started out on drums (which I can still do a decent job of playing them now), and your playing and techniques absolutely blew me away just as soon as _I_ first discovered you on IG when your posts kept popping up in my ecplore page. You're by far my favorite drummer on IG right now, and it really feels like there is no parallel competitor in your age and stature right now. Seriously, you have the makings of becoming one of the greatest drummers ever out there, and you're definitely on the right track to getting to that level. Your verbal techniques can also be applied to other instruments very successfully; i.e. "don't overthink it," etc. Man, you got _IT_ . Glad to see you pursuing and living out your dreams and doing what you love to do. Keep up the great work, man!!

I have been watching your videos on Instagram and just found you on KZbin. Your way of thinking is the biggest lesson of this video. Stay out of your own way and do what works without hurting yourself. You play amazing as well. I play everything matched grip and never questioned using traditional grip. Not that i think one is better than the other but thats the way i started playing. Great video and concept. I wish you continued success!

I wonder if he can do all of what he just did matched? Is it easier for jazz. I'm in my school jazz band I love it but I play matches I'm not sure of the benefits of traditional. My band director says the reason it's still used today is just because it looks cool. My soul is mainly in rock though I'd like to have the capability of playing low volume and having g the control to play jazz because i also really love that style and i think it will better me as a musician and will help in my normal playing which is usually classic rock single bass drumming.

Great video! Excellent job of explaining the details of what you do, and even what you omit. I got locked into a very rigid traditional grip when I first started playing at 16 many years ago, and my left hand never developed into what it needed to be, so I gave up in frustration thinking that was the only ‘correct’ way to do it, and I must just be lousy at it. Have just played match grip all these years, but because of KZbin, I’m finally at point my life where I can circle back and figure out how to make this mine and go forward. I’ve already picked up some great tips from you and others, all of which was never addressed when I was 16.

My drum teacher taught me traditional grip when I was 15. He also taught me to made use of the pointer and middle finger for added precision and wrist comfort. Can't roll nearly as fast as you can single-handedly with your "spider web" technique, gotta teach myself how to do that. My drum teacher had a similar technique to get super fast, but his involved turning the hand upside-down and using the thumb as a fulcrum while tapping the stick super fast and relying on snare bounce. Also, similar to what you said, something he told me when I was trying to get it down (it took me between one to two months with weekly lessons to finally "find my grip") was "You'll know when you've found the right grip. The stick will feel natural to your hand. Then you'll arguably never go back because it's more comfortable on the hand than match grip." My family sold my acoustic drum set from teenage years without my permission >:(. But my friend recently gave me his old electric set, so I'm looking forward to getting back into the groove. I'm actually kinda stoked because I can play with headphones and not piss off neighbors while having a little more bounce in the drums than the conventional acoustic setup. Anyway, point being, your videos have made me excited about drums again. I'm glad to see the craft of Buddy Rich-level technique lives on in the new generation.
