When the Grid goes down the reality will bite for those who are unprepared. Fuzzy sent me a book that not only has a great story, but is loaded with information we can learn now to help us when no one else is able to.

As an ER nurse I'm always shocked and dismayed with the number of people that just expect to be taken care of. I do appreciate the training I've had over the years of being in emergency situations. We do need to be more proactive in taking care of ourselves and hoping that we are able to take care of others. And yes, I have childbirth kits in my preps.

Isn't it sad there are so many disasters?. We have had so many (tornados and floods) all our neighbors heads are spinning. Many folks do help out--a lot, but we can still learn from gifted writers that use imagination and future probabilities to help us prepare. Like these classes you mentioned, we also plan for the worst while hoping for the best.

Deb, I read book one and two. Loved them. Can't wait to see if there are more. I am reading so many different series of books, I can't remember...lol. I have learned so much from reading prepping books, and emp books. Mrs. Ohio Alone lent me the Grid down e-book series. Thanks Tara. I can't get enough of all those books. Take care.

Bow hunting is very popular in Maine, and most everywhere else too. A bow does not make a sound when fired and can be a super weapon for self defense if you have enough warning to draw and fire. In some cases you may not have the opportunity but in other cases you will and it's another good defense back-up to learn.

Ted had a similar childhood. When he tells people they sort of look at him like, "Yeah Right" Its sad on one hand so many people just don't know, and its not so sad sometimes that most don't know, its just in these times, what they don't know may just actually kill them. Thank you

WOW DEB, that is some video ! The book is yours to keep and glad you found it interesting enough to color-code the area of interest.. As you found out, there are still alot of skills out there for all of us to utilize..Thankfully there are plenty of books out there, I bought lots of them in the early 60"s from a magazine called [ FUR-FISH-GAME } out of COLUMBUS,OHIO...

Yeah, my fiction reads I go through kindle. My reference stuff on saving seeds, nurses guides, animal husbandry, Encyclopedia of Country Living, making sausage etc., I always buy in hardcopy. Have a good library, it's important. I know during the Great Depression here locally they passed paperbacks around, so the last one who passed it on would track the book down to make sure it had been passed over to someone else. Rather a neat system.

I agree with you about future probabilities. Reading can really make you think about what you need, and also what you may have to learn. Hands on is always good, but being able to prepare for things you maybe never have thought about, does a lot for you too, so I will be getting my hands on that book too, and thank you so much for the review, it makes a difference. I love to read too. Shoot, I could start a library.

Ironically enough I was just thinking about the baby situation myself! I myself cloth diaper. And I thought once my youngest (so far I have used the same diapers through all my children) potty trained, I would sell them (at used very very cheap prices for mom's who are interested in cloth but don't have the money to try it out). That had been my plan for a bit. However, there's consignment shops where I live that already do that-that's where I was going to take mine as well. But, I decided on further pondering, it would be best for me to store them with my prepping stuff, and then if a woman did have a baby when shtf. She would at least have diapers for the poor thing. And my local cloth diaper community already does "off grid" challenges of washing them, usually at least once a year. All it takes is gray water (it can of course be fresh water too, but doesn't have to be), a bucket, and a plunger as the agitator. Wash wash wash (and soap of course of some sort). And then wring and hang to dry. Disposables could be scarce to non existent at some point.

In the 50's my father trapped animals and squirrels in the Great Smoky Mountains... He brought them home, skinned and boiled and cooked the meat. many times we would NOT have eaten without this, my father was in the USAF for 30 years and at this particular time he lost his paycheck and we had to make do with what we had. I tell people this now and they look at me like I am insane. We did not do without anything.

That book looks really good! That was very sweet of Fuzzy! Yup in a grid down there would be a need for things like cloth diapers. Lack of access to birth control measures would certainly result in little miracles if we were ready for them or not. We all know how they love to surprise us when we are least expecting it! Even after short term power outages of a couple days to a week there can often big rise in birth rates. (Well known fact, not fiction!)

Yeah, I do too, have the kits. We have medical types in my community so if they don't have the stuff at home, I can help out. I just don't have the whole set up together yet. It's important. Knowing how to sterilize the stuff is important too. Which isn't as hard as people think.

For more quiet hunting for small game consider a pellet gun. Illinois Trapper's Assoc. and the Illinois chapters of Fur Takers of America may be able to get you started on the right path in developing trapping skills. Also check with your county extension office or state dept. of conservation/fish & game about tapping seminars.

I enjoyed that book, also Lights Out by David Crawford, Deep Winter Series by Thomas Sherry, and the "Lights" series by Terri Blackstock (There are four of those books). The bonus is if you have a kindle they are cheap. But, if the lights actually go out, you don't have the books for reference :)

I will have to look for this book. I've read Patriots by James Wesley Rawles and loved it. This sounds like it should be just as good. Since it is so hard to fathom what may actually be coming at us, these types of books give you a sense of what could happen and help to make you more aware and more prepared I think.

I ordered the book from Amazon and got it a couple of days ago. My goodness, your eyes are better than mine! I may go blind reading the small print. OK, I just checked to see if it is on Kindle and it is so I ordered it. That way I can adjust the font size. Thumbing through it, I know I am going to like it! Thanks for the recommendation!!

The book sounded interesting but paper versions were very pricey so I downloaded it on my Kobo. Read it in 3 days. Very intriguing. Just waiting for Part 2 to be available on Kobo. The Rainbow warriors are a very strong possibility.

Sling shot is another possibility. I've read an article on delivery but other than string to tie off cord what would go in a childbirth kit? Maybe the Avow Lds page has a list. No more kids for me but who knows who I may encounter.

Fuzzy sends me email quite often..wealths of information on whats happening.. he is a great guy. The book sounds interesting, one I suggest is AVOW it's an online LDS community of preparedness-minded people just look up AVOW LDS on the internet, I would copy and paste it but youtube won't allow it,. You can print off a wealth of info.. I believe it was 500 and some pages it took me awhile to print it.. but I am so glad I did! It covers things I would never even think of! Blessings:)

Another good silent way to hunt is bow hunting. I think you're right when it comes to making noise. In SHTF situation more than likely you will be running from the powers that be and in hiding from persecution. Silence will be the key & good hiding spots. I'd check out any local caves where they are secluded and the temps will be comfortable year round with a stream nearby. I would also think that THEY would be less apt to use heat sensors to find you while inside the caves.

Rather than read fiction books I suggest folks volunteer to work in natural disaster, search and rescue, Outward Bound survival classes in order to learn first hand how to deal with REAL disasters that are REAL learning experiences not what someone imagines will happen.
