I feel like the Gift of the Magi joke works better with context. They're debating whether you should get gifts for your SO's parents if they didn't get you anything: "It's so tough, because you don't wanna make them feel bad, but at the same time, maybe you need to break the cycle." "How are you gonna make them feel bad if they get a present?!" "Because they didn't get _you_ a present!" "Fuck that, they'll be so excited to get a _present,_ that they'll just be like, 'Ooh, present!' Stop overthinking it, just go to Pier 1 Imports and buy 'em one of those wicker basketballs!" "Griffin, imagine 'Gift of the Magi', and the woman's like, 'I sold my hair to get you this watch chain', and he's like, 'Oh, cool, that'll go great with my watch.'"
