Time for some number crunching, as Dave looks at both WWF and WCW and compares TV ratings and house show attendance numbers for the last 5 years in great detail. There's a lot of numbers and stuff here but I'll try to sum it up easily. When it comes to WCW, they're obviously in the midst of their hottest run ever. But there's a misconception that WCW winning the cable ratings war is some new thing, when in reality, WCW has pretty much always beaten WWF in cable ratings, with the Saturday Night show beating early Raw and Prime Time ratings all the time, but they weren't in prime time. And no one really paid attention until the companies began going head-to-head on Monday nights. The truth is, yes, WCW is winning the war but the alleged "decline of WWF" is overrated. 1996 was WWF's strongest house show year since 1991, even though their TV ratings have hit new lows. But overall, WWF is still doing strong business everywhere else and TV ratings haven't shown to have that much effect on ticket sales. In fact, WWF's house show business grew at a faster rate than WCW's did last year and with increased ticket prices, their house show business became even more profitable. There's a perception from people who believe the Monday night ratings are the entire business and believe WWF is in trouble because they're losing the ratings war, but overall, they're still pretty strong (I find stuff like this interesting, because the revisionist version of history is that WCW damn near put WWF out of business until Vince heroically fought back and conquered his enemy. Reality is, they were never even remotely in danger of it and aside from TV ratings, they were doing their best business in years on every other front. Sure, they were a distant second in TV ratings but in all other aspects of the business, WCW was only barely winning).

@1:09:10 There is a discussion about Bret not appearing the next day at Wrestlemania. It's been discussed repeatedly that Bret was advised and/or had advised the WWE that not attending may be best simply because when you are a stroke survivor, the auditory impact of that many fans can cause ABI patients to have a negative emotional reaction. Sometimes, for ABI patients, it's best to pick the dates you attend events because you only have one night and the next, you are completely exhausted which causes inappropriate or negative emotional reactions to happen.

If Bret hadn't got the Stroke, he might have got involved with WWE after the Hall of Fame in terms of storylines and guest appearances like for example, he was invited for the 15th anniversary of Raw but he turned that down. It was rumored had he appeared he would come out at the end of the show where Vince McMahon was about to announce who is the greatest Raw superstar of WWE Raw history. And he would punch McMahon and put him in the sharpshooter. Since he did not appear, Mankind took his spot. Also, Bret Hart was planning having WWE published his Autobiography but he withdrew because they wanted to edit a lot stuff he wrote on his book. There were a lot of possibilities for him to come back before then. But hey he finally ends up coming back in 2010 the rest is history.

1:12:20 as somewhat of an authority on WWE Entrance themes, I think I can answer that question JR seems to not know. It wasn't the Hart Dynasty theme that played, I just went back and listened to it. It was a brand new, re-recorded remake of Bret Hart's theme song done just for this. The idea is that Jimmy Hart co-producd the old theme and so they had Jim Johnston redo it in a new version so that they wouldn't have to pay any royalties on it. But yes, Conrad is mistaken, that was NOT Hart Dynasty's theme. It was a Bret Hart 2010 Remix.

Jim Ross is a legend in wresting but not as a wrestler ask Harley Race, Flair, The Funks if the NWA belt was just a prop. It does not mean you won the belt in a legit contest between men. It means you are in the companies and fans eyes the best and deserve to make the most money. Its really only non-wrestlers in the wrestling business that hold this view. There are exceptions but most of those guys were mid card guy who did not draw top PPV or live crowds. This is why wrestling is having problems today as the belt is treated as a prop and therefore is meaningless. Why would anyone watch a Main Event title match if the belt means nothing.

It probably got enough heat on Vince to get the Mr.McMahon character as over as he is and was. Without that we wouldnt have had the Stone Cold feud. Without that wed probably be watching Nitro. Everybody made a lot of money and surely the sting of losing a worked belt to your now former employer (in a sympathetic manner without even doing a clean job) The fact that Bret came back and made amends suggests that he was angrier at Vince for Montreal than he was over Owen.

It's Vinces belt. If he doesn't want it on WCW or he wants to beat someone in any form or fashion he has the right to do so. Brett overreacted big time.
@jusbertmeza44244 жыл бұрын
That’s not how it works. Bret couldn’t take the WWF belt to WCW because it’s intellectual property and everyone knows that. Bret was willing to drop the belt before he left. He was still suppose to be in the WWE for another month until he was released so Vince could have still taken it from him within that time frame. He just wanted to embarrass and disrespect Bret in his home country to his new prodigy micheals
@travelreview59624 жыл бұрын
@@jusbertmeza4424 man Vince had advertised that match and that angle for months and the future matches scheduled depended on Bret losing that night, the belt was scheduled to come off him that night wether he quit or not. They tried 100 different ways to take the belt off Brett and here turned literally everyone down. It's not the promotions responsibility to take the belt off you in a convenient way for you lol. Plus Brett tells the story that he wasn't going to drop it to Shawn no matter what and if you haven't heard him say that then you're on the wrong end of the pool.
@jusbertmeza44244 жыл бұрын
Garrett Jeffers of course he wasn’t going to drop the belt to Shawn he disrespected him no part of kayfabe and he understandably stood his ground. If Shawn disrespected undertaker you would probably have a different opinion on his understanding response of not wanting to push him over. And this notion of Bret turning everything down is nonsense. Jim Cornette himself the architect of the screw job said Bret ran a few ideas off them that were actually good like him losing the title to taker then taker losing it to Shawn on Monday night as a storyline for Shawn. And these were proposed before they made the match official. The idea that there was no other way other than disrespecting the champion in his home country is absurd. Idk why your defending WWEs decision to backstab their star wrestler wether you like them or not. Vince just did it out of spite of Bret going to WCW even though Vince forced him to leave by breaking their contract because he couldn’t afford the contract he gave Bret. Vince and the WWE were in the wrong plain and simple.
@travelreview59624 жыл бұрын
@@jusbertmeza4424 okay, I recall what cornette said a little bit differently but I do see your side. Tbh, I've always seen your side. For many years I felt like Bret was screwed. However has ive gotten older and watched how Brett let this bother him for almost 30 years, and read his book which is full of bitterness and what appears to be a lot of fictional situations my opinion has changed. You're a grown man, a professional, you operate in a real but fixed environment. If someone tells you to lose, you lose. That's your job. Guys lose in ways they do not want to every single day, right or wrong. You're getting paid millions of dollars. Hell man I've seen idk how many college athletes lose very real championships after there NCAA decides someone in their train broke some recruiting rules, and what do they do? They say damn that sucks but they move on. Like I said I see your point and at this point I hope you see mine too. Brett never won that belt, it was given to him. Just like it was given it can be taken away. That's the job. As far as Taker you're right i do respect him more than Brett and that's because he would've never handled this situation like Brett did. @markprescott64773 жыл бұрын
Goldberg’s kick singularly is not what ended him in the ring, it was Bret continuing to wrestle for weeks after continuing to take more unprotected bumps to the head and getting most likely another concussion in one of his last matches. A lot of speculation on if Bret would have just took a break after goldberg and gave himself a chance to heal. But Bret would have been CRAZY to miss out on all that money if he wasn’t legit hurt. Wrestling was white hot in 1999/2000 and I’m sure he would have came back to WWE had it not been for the injury. Just think, Bret would have only been 43/44 and we would have most likely gotten Bret vs Angle. I myself do believe Bret was legit hurt and it cost him major money.
