Grimes hit the nail on the head. After having my child I struggled with the same conflict. On one hand I want to be the feminist that my grandma fought so hard to raise up, this independent woman who can do it all. But having a strong career meant someone else was taking care of and raising my child. I longed to watch her develop and felt guilty either way. In the end I chose to fully commit myself to my child's upbringing and don't regret it one bit. My corporate career never cared for me and would have let me go to meet their numbers in a heart beat. But my child loves me unconditionally. In the end, I am more valuable as a mother than as an employee in some company.
@richardcompton6702
@richardcompton6702 Жыл бұрын
That's dope. I feel like both the old kind of "implied" or "assumed" motherhood role and the newer kind of feminist "responsibility" to embody independence to solidify and progress Women's rights each present their own barriers or challenges to properly valuing a child and really assuming that motherhood role to its completion. I feel like if I were a woman I'd be torn and have trouble recognizing, let alone resolving those things. I can totally see how tempting, or even seemingly necessary for survival it would be to kind of just minimize the full scope of those undertakings and just view a child as a sacrifice or burden in some type of way rather than integrate just how important and valuable and enriching of a choice it can be on a personal level. Not just for society or the child but personally. Like my Mom was wonderful and also involved in business when she was younger but kind of never accepted giving up her career and even after 20 years not working, she goes out of her way and find ways to work herself unnecessarily hard. It's incredibly admirable seeing someone who, even at almost 65 years of age just never gives up and she 110% checked every box as a mom but at the same time, as an adult, I just want to see her complete and content and I often wonder had she either saw her career through or fully integrated that decision to leave if she'd be more at peace, happier and/or more fulfilled. Hope I'm not overstepping but what you said is so natural and powerful to see someone genuinely finding themselves in motherhood and making the choice to fully commit to that role despite all the complexities and distractions of our modern world.

What Gingerxbread said! "Naw, she might be nerdy but she's a gold digger too. She APPLIED FOR & got a $90,000 arts grant from the Gov't of Canada DURING COVID, WHILE STILL WITH MUSK. Her family is wealthy and in politics. I lost all respect for her after hearing that. That money needed to go to less popular, starving artists. She also didn't do all of her own production on her early albums as claimed - but also didn't credit the original producers."

I am unaware of the villainizing the media has done, or why. I've just seen her in a handful of videos, and she always seems like such a dumb clown. I don't understand the popularity. I can't believe she's in her 30s and has multiple children-- she seems stunted at about 15, and at about equivalent grade level. It's baffling.

This video is by far the greatest “interview” or conversation you can find of Grimes. She rarely does stuff like this and when she does, it’s usually 10 minutes long (if we’re lucky) and just about her music or Elon, because that’s all the world really cares about with her. I think interviewers are respectfully amazed by her, but none can actually like keep up in conversation, ya know? The guy for Vanity Fair in April said that talking to her was like a four hour game of pinball. True. But like?… rude? She speaks and processes stuff so fucking fast and when Vanity Fair or Vogue gives her 4 fucking minutes of airtime, we hardly get to hear what she actually feels and believes. Furthermore to have it be taken so seriously is a joy to see, Lex obviously can keep up with her and actively conduct a very well provoked and well articulated conversation on these topics. When I found this I gasped. This was such an incredible and important conversation and I keep coming back to this video to rewatch and learn more every time.

I don't think she's that unique, or intelligent. She is definitely above average, but that's not saying a lot. People here are acting like she's some sort of genius, or worse, a musical genius. I think she's more crazy and narcissistic. The fact that she does understand music so deeply whereas most people don't is probably where most of that is coming from. Obviously, if shes interesting to someone like Elon there may be some deeper learning skills in there too.

Here I am, nearing 70, first thinking from seeing a Met Gala photograph of her, that she was avant-garde, not in a judgemental way, more as an observation. After hearing this podcast, I feel such optimism. She is refreshing, insightful, expansive, unique, thoughtful, creative...how lucky the world is to have a bright light like Grimes who thinks positively about the possibilities of the future instead of the negative, cynical destructive views prevalent. Her favorite quote aligns with my views. My opinion of her morphed into admiration. I was intrigued by her because I admire Elon Musk's visionary approaches and stance on freedom of speech.

"Cynicism is often confused for insight." I agree with this 100%. I used to be a hopeless romantic but since my divorce it's been a string of psychos and narcissists. I always end up losing something. My heart has been hardened and almost forgets(and no longer cares) what it's like to be loved. I don't want to feel that way even though there's a certain sense of freedom in it. I just miss the hopeless romantic sometimes.

Hearing Grimes speak is like hearing my own mind in its fast and free space, before it remembers to filter, and reconfigure everything to enable greater understanding and digestibility for the people around me. Not because I’m smarter than anyone, but because the strange stares, questioning laughs, or blunt “wtf’s” over my lifetime tell me I need to really focus on the perception of the other, especially if back and fourth conversation is the aim. Hearing Grimes speak so humble and free was incredibly endearing, interesting, and for myself it’s been a liberating moment that I hope to consciously utilize.

Totally agree with Grimes. Trying to make meaningful music by yourself nowadays is one of the most difficult and underrated forms of art there is: it demands of you to become a composer, arranger, producer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, designer, videographer, editor, VFX artist, marketing strategist, copywriter. And all of that trying to maintain a certain level of eloquence and mental sanity. [And of course, obtaining the tools and resourses that'll make the journey possible to you.] That's why if you happen to enjoy the work of a fellow artist, you must support it. [In whatever way you find possible, it doesn't always have to be money. On a personal level, I happen to deeply enjoy an unexpected loving message from a kind internaut. Makes my soul burst in joy.]

@@JamesJessenfedden I understand but unfortunately, that's not enough nowadays. I mean, you can have one of the greatest musical compositions of all time sitting on your streaming platforms, and still be heard by virtually no one. I have more examples of these kinds of situations that I'd like to admit: totally mesmerizing compositions [composed, produced, mixed, and mastered by the very same person] that due to lack of the rest of the things I've mentioned, get almost unnoticed. You might say that's not redundant to the point you're trying to make, but if you spent years/months of your life trying to bring sonic beauty to this world, chances are you'd love to hear your creations flowrish in the minds of fellow humans.

Don't mean to troll, but when it comes to Nahko... I just... No. I can't. He is so characteristic, stereotypical, if you will, of the 21st century unoriginal opportunistic poser who epitomizes what Jaron Lanier describes as the stasis of music from the late 90s until today. Quoting from You Are Not A Gadget: "Popular music created in the industrialized world in the decade from the late 1990s to the late 2000s doesn't have a distinct style-that is, one that would provide an identity for the young people who grew up with it. The process of the reinvention of life through music appears to have stopped." His music is bland, has no place in the history of recorded music because it's painfully derivative and eschews original thought and musical style in favor of hippie dippy tropes, and thus serves no real purpose other than playing dress up with an entourage at festivals for people rolling on molly cut with gas station drugs. He is a caricature of everything the modern liberal is, essentially representing some bizarrely strange reality denial that is omnipresent and damaging to society because it promotes meaninglessness in a confused society which seeks true meaning and real connection. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul😅

I was pleasantly surprised by this interview. Great questions! I recently took a job as a STEAM teacher and I love it but it can be challenging to teach in a public school system because of all the constraints. Sadly, kids are so institutionalized that when you give them the freedom to create and design they freak out and want you to tell them what to do. It’s hard to teach productive struggle because they get so frustrated. I can connect to what Grimes was talking about when it comes to education. There are some of us teachers that are trying to break the system from within. There are better ways for sure. We just finished a unit on digital literacy and I agree with Grimes that these are important things that need to be taught in schools. We had a debate on AI which was fun to watch. A lot of kids had negative views about it at first. I think most of them walked away with a more balanced and educated perspective. Anyway, this interview was great!

I get a weird kind of vertigo listening to these subjects being discussed. As I programmer I feel like I have a non-zero impact on the world when I come up with a solution to a problem, but I also feel so small and insignificant when I look at the history being us and everything that needs to be built to get us to a brighter future. It kind of makes me realize how important it is to work together because we can't really accomplish anything on our own
@azubyte
@azubyte Жыл бұрын
I am not a programmer, but i have felt that way about life during different times. We are all cogs in the giant wheel and we all build upon what has come before while simultaneously trying to imagine and build the ideal future. You may feel insignificant, but none of us could exist without the collective effort we all give… whether it is in a career outside the house or as a stay at home parent/grandparent etc. As I get older, i realize that everyone makes a wonderful difference to the loved ones, coworkers, friends, strangers and animals in their lives. Every interaction you have with another living thing can be a measure of how the world will look back at your life and be so grateful you were a part of it. That is one of the reasons I resonate so much with Lex, Love really is the answer to it all….let it permeate your life and radiate, even when you don’t feel like it and it will boomerang and bless you like nothing else could. I gave up my “career” as a geologist to stay home with my kids, we struggle and gave up a lot “monetarily”, gut I have been blessed to have great role models who taught us to live frugally and enjoy the little things. I am much more fulfilled in that regard….but it took me awhile b/c what you see on TV in our society is that value is often assigned by how much you make or how much you have accomplished in a career. God has made us unique, given us each a gift and dreams. He put you here at this time with your skills, heart and desires to leave the world better than you found it. But the important thing is you can only do it one day at a time.

This interview completely changed my incorrect, preconceived, notion of who I thought Grimes was. Lex, I am so glad that you are you, and you gave Grimes the opportunity to reveal her beautiful mind and her wonderful outlook on life and the future.

I had written off Grimes and never really gave her a chance to seem interesting to me. Man, this episode really changed that. I share more with her than I do with most people in my life. I very much live in my own head and absolutely love life and love learning. And her views on how technology has changed, is changing, and will change the world 100% match with my beliefs. What an interesting person, and what an interesting episode. Thank you both!

She's great. Why? Because there is NO ONE like her. She's a very unique idiosyncratic human being. Those are my favorite kind of people. I first found her around 2010 with her music....which I just adored. Look up her music video for her song Realiti. It's still one of my favorite songs....ever. Seriously. It's that good. But her as a human? I'm glad she exists.

Lex love your work! This chat with Grimes was refreshing and interesting for me, I am a 60 year old man and a partner in a consultancy firm with 30 employees and what I heard here refreshes my respect for the younger generations! I have embraced the blockchain for its fairness and the positive change it it will bring to the world, I hope one day it removes the middle man so that artists can be truly creative and rewarded as such Blockchain has already revolutionised thinking and it's unstoppable now! I want to assure you both that old folks in politics today are not representative of all us older folk, they are driven by votes, myself personally am driven by what is right and fair to all which includes the environment. Rest assured there are many older advocates in the world for young people needing support, keep up the good work! and let's get University education free again!
