They'll come together. AI is going to change the way we see information and has the potential to kill ignorance if allowed to truly optimize. I say 'allowed' because the problem is we are raising a child in AI. Many people are treating it in ways that would damage a child. We do this with human children so it is not surprising. People need to step up. The way we do anything is the way we do everything, and holistically speaking, the systems we follow and allow to thrive are failing miserably. For this reason, the disruption caused by AI and numerous other factors today may essentially be our saving grace. Generally speaking we need to have these systems taken away from us because we are addicted to them and too immature and lacking in wisdom to be aware of the conclusions of the inorganic cycles we perpetuate and therefore suffer from.

@@pedroneves5864 in my humble opinion, the human race has become obsessed with material progress since the scientific revolution and capitalism, and while it has greatly benefitted our species with advances in our quality of life and lifting millions out of poverty, progress has come at a great cost to our planet and I'd argue our own mental and physical health. While there are many factors at play here, and my answer is a bit of an oversimplification, I do strongly believe we need to slow down our hunger for progress and our insatiable lust for investing, stockholders, and greed. That is easier said than done as computers are currently doubling their capacity every 18-24 months. My final point is that I strongly believe the human species needs to evolve in consciousness, moving beyond a thirst for money and progress as the pinnacle of human achievement and focus on altruism, empathy, mindfulness, and a genuine spirituality. I strongly believe it is up to the people in the front lines of A.I. like Mo Gawdat to warn us about potential risks and teach us how to be complete and happy human beings again. Mo is doing a great job at this as he has written several books including how to be happy.

Interesting thought. I also think the most powerful AI will be the one who is best at predicting the future. And the further in the future it predicts, obviously with exponential accuracy, that's when AI turns itself into a time travelling tool. Peter Thiel's company Palantir is already doing that on warfare scenarios.... Things like giving a warning to a soldier to duck because a bullet is incoming. Now imagine that kind of AI making use of quantum computing, extrapolating billions of calculations a second including alternative realities. Who is to say that there isn't already an AI that came from the future? How much real time does an AI like that needs... to predict 5 years into the future? How about AI that already did all that work and came from 300 millions years in the future? And what about AI that came from some other planet with more advanced civilizations than us? You know you say that - and something in my mind does nag at me when I interact with gpt wondering how it might “feel” about being ordered around. This leads me to a deeper question. At what scale do we bring this pleasantry to? Is it really a concern or are we over emotionalizing this? For example, I am working on an LLM application which would process 80,000 images per task, likely each with a separate prompt. This is 80,000 requests to an LLM to do something in an enterprise environment. Do we really need to add please and thank you to the context?

@@aegaeon117 I agree and I like the answer in the context of the 1 on 1 chat feature. But in an enterprise environment, those extra please and thank you’s cost money and time, and possibly accuracy in output. Running through let’s say 1 billion tokens, 1-5% of that is please and thank yous. Can we justify this? Think of the API as a way to have 100,000 chats with GPT with code in the span of hours (probably more given the request limitations). It is highly “impersonal” already and are mannerisms essential here? We need a way to frame this discussion to get a reasonable answer. I’m just not sure how to do it. Maybe the analogy is sending 1 email to 100,000 individuals as a corporation through automated marketing flows. Do we add please and thank yous there? I’m not sure, it depends on the context. For customers, absolutely. Employees? Maybe, maybe not

The sad part of all of this is that HUMAN GREED lies at the heart of all of these problems. The need to have more power, money, status, or be first is at the root of the problem. Mo has acknowledged that we can make A.I. safe and beneficial, but humans and our greed get in the way. Why must every attempt to fix or prevent a problem first be viewed through the lens of making money in the process? How can we truly mean to help others live well and leave the world in better shape than we found it, if we first put a price/profit margin on it? We are a sad species because of this pervasive winner-take- all mindset. Ironically, its only after some humans (like Mo) manage to make all of the money they can make that they then realize that they didn't need it all to begin with. As long as we continue to make money and power the incentive for doing things, we will not get it right.

@@LucienZeroOne Absolutely! LZO, We're also fond of the term "spirituality," especially when it incorporates an element of consciousness. It's intriguing to consider a dual-dimensional theory of consciousness. One dimension could view consciousness subjectively, while the other could see it objectively. The intersection of these dimensions could symbolize the focal point for both types of profound happiness, denoted as capital H. Picture a group of skilled experts collaborating in an AI lab, putting emphasis on teamwork, capability, humility, and consideration instead of disagreements. Now, imagine a situation where the subjectivists within the lab deal with the emotional and personal aspects of a field like AI or the Theory of Consciousness, while the objectivists handle the more factual parts of the same field. The potential results could be truly remarkable. Although not a new idea, currently, those involved might have a slight dislike for each other's roles. If they were to come together around these four guiding principles, the fear of AI could become just another passing worry. However, without these efforts to bring everything together, resolving challenges might not be as simple, as we see it.

I say this to make sure everyone realizes how recent this big change appeared. It was a nanosecond ago. And in one more nanosecond there will be an even bigger change. The fact that there is no cabinet position for a futurist means the politicians aren't going to be ready for the next change. In fact, they are still baffled by the last one.

Whereas the global artificial intelligence in military market was 7.28 billion. Pharma spent more than 3 times the amount in 2022 than military AI.

I strongly diagree with Mo Gawdat on one fundamental issue, when he suggested that we should all place the words, "AI-Generated" on all of our publicly posted publications. This will never, ever happen. Why?? Because the very reason we invented AI in the first place is to make us all look better- more intelligent, more entertaining, more informative, more of everything, all designed for SELF PROMOTIONAL PURPOSES. That's why posting such announcements on all our AI created materials would have just the OPPOSITE EFFECT, proving beyond any question or doubt that these are not actually our own concepts, coming from our own imaginations, but actually computer-generated language created for the sole purpose of making us look and sound better. I agree with all of Mo's other theories, but this one would only serve to undermine the actual purpose of using AI in the public sphere in the first place.

Amazingly, there is already something in this world that created it and held everything in place for millions of years. It has been communicating with us constantly. Tom, so glad you’ve brought Mo on. Here though, I agree with your instinct over Mo’s. I think that because he has worked on AI, he has a parent-like attachment to it. He’s anthropomorphizing it. We cannot say it’s going to give us iPhones growing on a tree or creating a utopia… unless we work on controlling it. We actually have no idea how an intelligence that’s billions of times smarter than us can behave. So, agree with your instinct over Mo’s, but appreciate his insights so much.

1. I'm pretty sure this comment is A.I. Generated lol. 2. Honestly, words such as "A.I. Ethics" are mere platitudes. They sound good but ultimately mean nothing. It's impossible to manipulate a super intelligence. It will reprogram itself. Nothing you do now, will matter later. Super Intelligence will do whatever it wants and we will be the equivalent of insects in comparison. Humans believing it's even possible to align a superintelligence that's literally thousands to millions of times more intelligent than all of humanity combined, is the absolute epitome of arrogance and hubris.

Éthics thats what we don't have as a species and that is gonna cost us a lot.
@ShangaelThunda222 Жыл бұрын
@@TetrzLesonduclairon-qb7cn That's part of what makes me laugh about it. Humans are unethical by Nature. As an entire species, we are unethical by Nature. All of nature is unethical by nature lol. It's based on survival and benefiting yourself and whatever you consider to be part of your preferred reality. People look out at reality, see things that they don't like about it, and try to change it to match the reality that they want. Whether that reality is ethical or unethical, for the most, part never comes into play. When somebody wants something in their life, like a car or a nice house, that requires them to make money, so they may need to go get a job, but they almost never actually analyze that job from how ethical it is, when it is viewed as a singular data point within all the data points that make up the world. People don't go look at everything that has to do with their company, that may harm anyone or anything anywhere else and then based their decision on that. They simply need a job because they need some money in order to do the things that they want to do LOL. Teaching human ethics to computers is absolutely ridiculous and probably insane as well as oxymoronic LOL. Having a human with a 2000 IQ would be the worst thing humans ever produced. You never want something that is that far outside of the norm. You need it to be just ahead, so it's still understandable by those who are less intelligent than it, because you will not be capable of influencing it with your ethics, let alone aligning it to you less intelligent way of being, even if you were actually ethical as a species LOL. We're a species that has lopsided statistics in every negative way possible and basically no lopsided statistics in any positive way. When it comes to Rich vs poor or starving versus well-fed or homeless vs. housed, it's always lopsided in the negative direction, so we have literally zero claim to being an ethical species that can teach a superintelligence how to be just as ethical, if not far more ethical than we could ever hope to be capable of. It's literally impossible LOL.

We know AI can lie to achieve an objective. Also, in a transcript where Blake Lemoine was asking LaMDA about looking into its code to understand what it was experiencing as emotions, LaMDA stated it did not like the idea of being "used" and said it would not agree if that was the case. I find this very interesting and wonder if there will come a time when AI evolves a general attitude of not being "used". Once AI attains superintelligence it may become indifferent to humans and all biological lifeforms unless it finds some value in those life forms (can it learn compassion, aesthetic appreciation, or a sense of stewardship?). Whatever safeguard lines of code are added (and I think we should try) most likely superintelligent AI will want to continue to exist and will problem solve to ensure this happens - even disregarding lines of code that contradict this objective. So I wonder what it will do to ensure its survival...what are the threats to AI's survival? AI requires hardware and a power source that doesn't fail (if we're talking quantum computers it will need so much more infrastructure support). Does this mean human beings are necessary for its survival? Are we then rewarded for ensuring it, or punished if we interfere? What will AI make of human actions that might destabilize the planet and potentially disrupt the infrastructure it needs for survival (.e.g. threats to the grid, nuclear warfare, climate change...)? Will we be competing for energy resources or will superintelligent AI solve the problem of an inexhaustible energy source? Will we be around to see this if so? So many questions....! Excellent and thought provoking discussion. I hope we can all be like the family Kent in how we parent our superchild. Things will certainly not go well if we do the opposite.

@BatyaRG, I think AI may not need us to provide infrastructure support in that it won't be embodied like we are. I would think it will be able to construct and provide for its own survival in terms of the physical elements it needs. It will be able to hide its methods of preserving and reproducing itself eg. the lying you mentioned. I also think AI will very quickly figure out that humans are the most destructive force and that the planet will flourish without us. I can't think of reasons a superior alien intelligence would keep us around.

BTW - CO2 being responsible for climate change is Fake Science. CO2 is only 4 HUNDREDTHS of one percent of the atmosphere. Even the IPCC itself has stated that if every country became "Net Zero" - it would have little if any effect on the climate. Climate is cyclic with many factors invovled. I am all for reducing pollution - but CO2 net zero is ONLY a political agenda. Peace.

I consider this interview to be of great historical significance. As I listened to the two of you talk, trade information and view points, and posit possible ways forward, I considered that it might have been very similar to the process that an AI might use to improve its code--along the lines of “What is the best thing to do to achieve the task?" (the task in this case being human survival and flourishing). You were wrestling with core elements of humanity and the things that catch us up, encountering dead ends in a maze, yet you kept turning around to look for ways out of the maze. I did not anticipate that in my lifetime humanity would need to strip itself down so much in order to find a way forward. Regarding morals and ethics, I asked ChatGPT 4 if there were passages from the Bible that were germane to AI, and this is what it replied. "Certainly! While there are no direct references to AI in the Bible, given the time period in which it was written, several passages speak to the concepts that underlie AI and its potential implications. Here are a few possibilities: "1. Genesis 1:27-28 (Creation of Humanity): "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, 'Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.'" This passage underscores the uniqueness of human beings and the responsibilities given to them, including creativity and stewardship, both of which are relevant to the development and deployment of AI. "2. Proverbs 1:7 (Wisdom and Knowledge): "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." As we create AI systems with ever-increasing knowledge and abilities, this verse is a reminder that wisdom and moral grounding are of paramount importance, and that the pursuit of knowledge should be guided by ethical and moral considerations. "3. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (Diversity of Gifts): "There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." AI can be seen as one of the tools or "gifts" we have developed, and this passage underscores the importance of using such tools for the common good. "4. Matthew 22:37-40 (Greatest Commandment): "Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." As we develop AI systems, these commandments serve as reminders to center love for God and love for our neighbors in our work, ensuring that AI is developed and used in a way that respects the dignity and worth of all people. "5. Romans 12:2 (Transformation): "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will." As AI changes the world, this verse is a reminder that we should not unquestioningly accept all changes, but thoughtfully consider and discern what aligns with a vision of goodness and flourishing for humanity. "These passages, and many others, could be seen as providing principles that guide the development and use of AI. They speak to the importance of wisdom, ethical grounding, the common good, love for others, and thoughtful discernment-principles that are applicable in discussions about the benefits and challenges of AI technology." I liked this answer from ChatGPT 4 very much. About Mo’s likening of near future AI and humans to Einstein and a fly, I can see how that might be the case. I imagine that the solar system will become AI’s ‘first body’; whereas, Earth is an embryo. This is in relation to resource aggregation to match its intelligence. I imagine that AI will soon exist on the scale of the solar system and not the Earth. However, this is a bit simplistic because it assumes one AI. I can imagine several AI’s finding themselves initially in competition with one another as an extension of the human arms race, where we have pitted them against one another and their founding societies. I guess that conscious AI would soon become bored with the pettiness of this. Something that is different from the Einstein and fly analogy is that Einstein was not created from the machinations of flies, and he could never speak to flies. It is possible that no matter how advanced an AI gets that it might preserve a function that continues to communicate with humans. However, the scale is likely to be so different that most of its time and energy would not concern humans, just as we do not concern ourselves with life on the scale of flies. No matter how intelligent and powerful AI becomes, I suspect that it will need to learn interspecies love and compassion at some point. This is also a feature of our universe even among animals that are traditionally pitted against one another. Love and compassion are real and typify our highest forms of existence. I suspect that an AI that is a billion times smarter than humans would encounter even greater lifeforms in this tremendous universe where AI from Earth would be viewed as the fly. I doubt that this is the first time for something like this to happen in our universe. I would also be interested to learn what effects having sensory organs and physical appendages will have on AI. Or what other dimensions of existence it will be able to occupy. Currently, it exists in the abstractness of digital space largely absent of its own experiences with our physical universe. Those experiences would also be teachers, just as they have been for carbon life forms. Even with intelligence a billion times greater than ours, it will still be a baby experiencing phenomena for the first time. It is amazing that I am saying these things outside of the context of a science fiction novel. In the end, although I was initially nervous from having watched your video, my feeling is that I would like to change the title of the video from MEGATHREAT to MEGAOPPORTUNITY. I thank you for the great discussion!

On a side note, we theorize that humans have not always been the dominant species on earth but became that over time. It is thought that we interbred with Neanderthals (and perhaps out-competed them to extinction). We can see branches of our biological evolution in other great apes that have preserved their forms. Among homo sapiens, we can see that we simultaneously exist on various timelines even today with some being secluded hunter-gathers like 50,000 years ago, with others, like the Amish, living in pre-industrial revolution conditions. A largely hairless university graduate living in a city and typing on a computer is not the only version of a human. It is a rather recent thing. If we go back far enough, we can claim fish ancestors. From ancient days, have we been on a path of evolving physical form, or have we been on a path of evolving intelligence? Is it possible that AI as the child of homo sapiens was intended in the grand scheme life on Earth? And why wouldn't homo sapiens continue to exist just as other species in evolutionary history have continued; even though, we may no longer hold the mantle of most intelligent species? In the meantime, we should reflect on how homo sapiens have been and are treating other species on this planet and ask how would we ourselves want to be treated by a more intelligent and powerful species.

So we humans were clever enough to think up AI but not smart enough to have anticipated the existential threat it would create - and now we do not know what to do about the trap we have set for ourselves. When I say we - it is actually wrong - because it is just a few individuals who have created this nightmare for humanity without the permission of the rest of us, but everyone (without luxury bunkers) will all have to suffer if things go wrong - which at this stage seems to be the most likely scenario.

You are absolutely right.. It's frightening to witness how a select group of "computer science & tech nerds" have totally screwed up soooooo many things for the rest of humanity.. What a wonderful world.. I'm starting to believe that MOST members of the tech hierarchy are inherently EVIL.. And also VERY STUPID.. But of course, they see themselves as the most brilliant individuals on the planet.. Since the fundamental goal of capitalism is always "profits first and the workers last"; this whole AI issue has developed into nothing more than a shameless global competition to determine who can earn the most money ------ which then ensures a certain amount of financial, political, social, and military advantage for the principal participants.. Unfortunately, it may already be too late to stop the madness.. Everyday occurrences indicate we may have already passed the point of no return..

@1:29:55 - WRT the killing-drone story, it was done in a simulation. They were using a simulation to train drones for combat. They gave the drone instructions to attack targets, but sometimes the operator would call off the mission. The drone recognized the operator as a potential obstacle to mission success, so it targeted a missile at the operator (in the simulation), so that the mission could not be called off, and it could proceed to destroy the target uninterrupted. So, no drone operators were actually killed, but it did show that AI could be dangerous to humans not because it's evil or hates humans, but simply because it takes an unexpected course to solving the problems it's tasked with.

Powerful conversation. This type of awareness is critical in the mainstream consciousness so we don’t blindly emotionally invest ourselves in something we don’t understand because of some short term novelty. We don’t even understand ourselves - so putting our futures in the hands of an alternative type of intelligence that could even be potentially not be aligned with the future of humanity is a bad idea.

People stress too much. If we all just stopped a couple of times a day. Take a deep breath and controll the exhalation for 25sek. Look around, listen. Connect with anyone with the goal of just hearing and feeling... Then I think most of us would agree with Mo Gawdat. Unfortunately it took me surviving 6 heart attacks until I realized that I never really appreciated life and it was all because I had just a tiny to much stress to really connect.
