Great job, Wags. For the kids at home, 11 alpha (top of the staple) is correct for approach with a transition to 12-13 in the roundout. 13 is "on speed" but a much higher risk of scraping the ventral fin or the speed brakes (by going from 13-15 degrees) or sinking in the overrun.

The first thing you notice (even though you're expecting it) is the field of view the pilot has from the F-16 cockpit. Great design. I also like how crisp and clear the HUD symbology is in the F-16. Thanks for the vid Matt.

One problem with the plane are it's teeny tiny MFDs (and just two of them). You need VR zoom to see anything on them. Might not be much of a problem in the real jet, given the higher resolution of the Mk I eyeball. Also, the DED really likes to pick up glare when the sun is behind/besides you.

Yeah!! Then -- only then -- take a step backwards and give us the F-4, A-7 and F-111. And two steps back to the Century Series: F-105 and F-100 first, and maybe F-106, F-104, F-102 and F-101, in that order. Three steps back: F-86D Sabre Dog and F-86H and we're full circle...by 2025? The F-106 carried the nuclear armed AIR-2A Genie. Who doesn't want to launch that at some incoming, hot-shot Mirage 2000's (in DCS)?? LOL "That's a nice tight formation, you four. Great video....can’t wait... Wags did not mention flaps at all ....He probably felt it was taken for granted.... the crowd involved that we knew so for somebody who does not know the F-16 here’s an exclamation To be clear, you don’t manually set the flaps for normal takeoff or landing (unlike other aircraft). Like was mentioned, the gear position will tell the jet if you are in takeoff/landing or cruise FLCS gains, and it will schedule flaps accordingly. One other wrinkle in the flap logic is the Alternate Flap switch, used to deploy the flaps in case of gear extension failure. The flaps go down to 20 deg, just as in normal gear down deployment. To prevent flap overload and control difficulties the flap will gradually retract automatically at speeds above 300 kt,, which is the normal gear down limit

@@czdaniel1 The hook is for instances when it can't use its wheel brakes for some reason. Either the brake system failed or the engine or hydraulics failed and the wheel brakes won't work. Many bases have a "barrier," basically an arresting cable on the runway to catch aircraft that have to use it. I've seen this happen once or twice.

At close final, the 2.5 lines are placed on the overrun and AoA is flown 11 to 13 degrees. This places the FPM just above the bracket at 11 and even more so at 13. You would fly at 13 if you wanted a bit lower touch down speed. Once over the overrun, the FPM is slightly raised to be 2-3 degrees below the horizon line. It's not a huge flare, but a lot different than putting down the Hornet.

Thanks for a proper explanation, Wags. As a tip for future training videos, could you show your control inputs? I'm having trouble with the base leg turn: how do I control where my FPM is, is that stick or throttle, or a combination? I usually just end up in the ground before I even finish the turn, or have to reduce bank angle because I soon will be in the ground otherwise, or when doing that I come out way to wide. I must be doing something wrong, but it's hard to tell with no control inputs shown :)

I'm with you in a way, I was practicing the basics because I couldn't wait and noticed it as well. One thing that pops in my mind is Wags and the team had access to the sim so they are making the DCS Viper as close to that as humanly possible, also Wags claimed he isn't as versed in the Viper. What sold me was the landing as well as the 2.5 degree line on the runoff, Wags touched down nice and soft all things considered. Back to what you mean use pitch and throttle to get the flight path marker in the AoA bracket and then use the throttle to control the rest. Hi, I think the last few patches broke something about aerobraking. This video recommends 13 degree nose up for aerobraking, correct? In the current version of open beta, one can only aerobrake 13.5 degrees before tailstriking the viper. 11 degrees if using airbrake override. Either DCS is currently incorrect, or 13 degrees is a recommendation that is too close to a tailstrike, in my opinion.
@magwo
@magwo 3 жыл бұрын
I recall reading some documentation claiming that tailstrike happens at about 16 degrees.

Hey Matt, are you using any stick during this approach or are you throttling and trimming? struggling to align the flight path and glide slope myself as they seem very much detached unless I trim. Very different landing to the f18 I am used to. Thanks.

I heard no mention of Trim being used. Should I then assume the AOA is completely controlled by airspeed, and that the plane always trims for 1G, even with the Gear and Flaps down, unlike the Hornet?

Some Viper pilots do, but most I know don't. AoA is controlled with stick pitch.

Nice vid Wags. But how do you lock the HUD display so it doesn't drift off the screen in a turn? Half the time in the pattern, my HUD display is off to one side, and I'm looking through a blank HUD screen, so my landings stink. Can't find anything about this in the DCS's Early Access manual.

So you're flying the Viper as 2,5° Glideslope-Marker on touchdown-zone instead of middle of e-bracket like the hornet? Will defenitly need getting used to, it defenitely feels as if you're to fast on final.

Good choice. I bought the Hornet twice and got it refunded, twice. Followed all the correct sequences for start and takeoff and still had pitch issues. Would literally barely climb. Thought the first time was just a glitch and maybe it had been addressed, so I tried again, with the same result. Contacted support both times, received NO responses both times.

Approach speed was quite fast in this video. It's much better to approach with the FPM between the top and middle of the AoA bracket, then flare with the FPM in the middle, then holding that AoA for aerobraking.

No, I was where I should be. Please take a look at some of real world F-16C landing HUD videos. In the F-16, you do NOT land with the FPM centered in the bracket, it is just above at 11 degrees and even more so at 13.
