Nice review. I would like to add my opinion about the gun: The cannon on the Harrier is VERY precise compared to almost any other module in DCS, against ground targets. The tracers fly in a steady single-file stream, then land in a super-tight grouping, usually right where the CCIP marker says they should. This makes it quite efficient, so you really don't need to hold the trigger more than a tiny burst per target, which in turn gives you lots of ammo for the next targets. Caveats: The gun seems to be pointing a bit higher than the nose/flight path, so you do need to keep that in mind and adjust your approach accordingly (don't dive into the ground chasing the CCIP marker!). Also, the recoil is minimal, but note that the gun pod is offset both vertically and horizontally from the centerline.

I would personally would have given it a slightly higher capability score as it can carry more weapons than most planes for the ground attack role and still be faster than an A-10. The Vertical Take off capability also means it is one of the few planes capable of operating from a ship that we got at the moment.

Getting back into DCS again. Started with Black Shark when it first released and loved it so much a few of us picked up some of the best gaming laptops we could find (2010) and accidentally packed our flight sticks into our toolboxes when we deployed to Iraq. Uh-60A\L Engine mechanics so we stick to the larger bases and thought we could pull off some fun off duty flying. Flew 20 times then started hopping bases regularly staying all over the place and it didn't take long before the 20lb laptops were left behind and the last thing we wanted to do after flying was fly in game off duty. Time to get back in the sky again. GR have a lot to do with that and the Harrier has always been a favorite as a heli/plane crossover so out comes the knee boards cheat sheets again. Dusted off the TrackIR to use while training then see how it is in VR. Once the ground and I are done fighting each other I plan to tag along when GR hit's the public servers. I hear BS3 might be coming and that will be a buy on release module if true with a coin toss on the F18/F16 later on. Thanks for all the videos.

I laughed at your comment about “weird interactions with the ground” - does anyone else remember the awful Hawk? The first time I landed that plane (earlier on in its development, before they redid the cockpit and flight model), it just “snapped” to the ground as soon as I touched down … it went from flying attitude to just as if it was sitting on the ramp (though still rolling forward obviously). We’ve come so far with this sim, guys!

Good review. Harrier's avionics looks very much like Hornet's, especially UFC and displays, which makes it easier to learn. But I must add one thing: a precise joystick is recommended if you want to control Harrier in hover mode. Even Schwarzenegger found it difficult in "True Lies" :)

Overall a nice review highlighting this module. I do think you could have stipulated (a bit more) and demonstrated the unique VTOL characteristics of the Harrier, being able to vertically land and perform a very short takeoff is extremely fun in the Harrier. That also ties in why it has got the engine information on the HUD, as with any ordnance or fuel tank weight on the aircraft overstressing the engine is a real concern. Of course, that is why you have the water injection system that can provide more engine thrust.

I like this module because of how unique the Harrier is with those movable nozzles. The only thing that annoys me is the Wingman AI - while I can take off from USS Tarawa with 4 Mk 82s and 2 IR Mavs, my wingman with the same loadout falls into the sea.

I love the Harrier, IIRC RAZBAM originally wnated to do the AV8B+ which woulod have had a radar and AMRAAM capability but got blocked for some reason. One slight corection, the GAU-12 is a 25mm 5 barrel gatling gun.

A bit of mis-information about the gau 12 there. The General Dynamics GAU-12/U Equalizer is a five-barrel 25 mm Gatling-type rotary cannon. This thing is over 2 years old and still missing basic keyboard mapping, for clickable-cockpit systems that have been modeled since the release. It flies pretty good and can be alot of fun, but the lack of progress becomes more and more evident with every flight.

I haven't actually flown the harrier in DCS (yet) so I can't really comment on how the harrier's cannon performs in game, but in real life it's actually quite a beast, probably second ONLY to the GAU8 in terms of modern western aircraft cannon. It's a 5 barrel gattling 25mm gun and basically splits the difference with regard to size and weight between the lighter 20mm (primarily air to air) Vulcan and the ultra heavy GAU8 which the harrier could never carry into the air. As an interesting side note, it's also carried by the AC-130 gunship, and an even lighter 4 barrel variant is used as the cannon in the F35 family.

Cap, I know my comments are waayyy of topics, but hey, you've been playing DCS for 3 or more years, and you know Caucacus region well, right? It seems funny as I recently tried to find what they're really look likes in real life and shockingly very different! Yes they are! Tried searching like Sochi or Krasnodar on youtube, you'll be shocked to see how DCS make the area as a war zone but so nice and friendly place in real life, except for poor georgians part. Yesterday I've watch Bald and Bankrupt channel, an English man trip to one of the Georgians town, and you can see how sadly poor they are, and I can said it was a war zones.

It’s funny the sound is the biggest problem I have with this module. To me it only sounds like an AV8B at idle. It’s not very dynamic at all, high throttle settings don’t sound like they’ve even been recorded from a real aircraft. The short looping they’ve used is extremely obvious, it’s a steady sound and yet you can distinctly hear it looping. As for external sounds, at full throttle the AV8B is pure deafening thunder, from all angles. This doesn’t capture any of that at all, this sounds like a regional jet in comparison.

My only complaint with the AV-8B module is the freaking outside sound! I’ve Never heard the Harrier sound like this. It sounds like a kitty cat on a fly by! It needs a full sound overhaul. Inside it sounds pretty good but outside it needs some work!

I need to ask a serious question re this jet. I do not have a HOTAS, and wonder, can this be configured in the settings menu to work the same on a keyboard along with a mouse like the other jets I have? A10, f15, SU33, SU25, SU27. I do not use all the keys on the keyboard when using DCS to fly, I just use the basics. Your help would be much appreciated

I’m torn between: Harrier for its vtol and ground attack M2000 for its delta and afterburner F18 for its afterburners and it’s ground I want the vtol but no afterburner makes the harrier slow. I like the m2k for its unique shape but it isn’t really a ground attack. I like the f18 because if it’s speed and ground capabilities but it is just such a default plane

Another nice "unfinished" module I don`t fly much anymore. The art work is stunning @ 4K. Nevertheless, many features are still bugged and unfinished. When you really sink your teeth into it, beyond free-flight, the bugs begin to arise. Too bad, because I really wanted to like this module. Hard to imagine RAZBAM is starting an F-15E and they can`t even finish this or the M-2000.

A whole lot has changed since this video was made. The gun is much improved and has armor piercing ammo now and is second only to the A10 in power you can kill an unarmored vehicle with a single hit and armored vehicles with 3, the agm122 Side arms actually have a 28 mile range at altitude the targeting pod has the highest resolution & best picture quality of any in the game as of 2022. And it can't carry 14 guided bombs it only carrys 12 laser guided GPS guided or lazer & GPS guided and of course two different types of cluster bombs. Mk20 & CBU99 both are absolutely devastating to surface ships as well. As for the 4 aim 9M air-to-air missiles it can carry irregularly shoot down fighters with them it's just that you have to get within 10 miles and of course I are guided missiles can be thrown off by flares easier than radar-guided missiles can be spoofed by chaff but that's true of all IR guided missiles, as for the aircraft's range you can of course air to air refuel or simply land at a forward operating base, speaking of which landing is laughably easy and simple as is taking off the aircrafts landing gear is rugged and stable as you have four sets of Wheels it is as maneuverable on the ground as it is in the air which is to say that it is extremely maneuverable. Able to literally sit still and spin 360° weather on the ground or in the air it can fly and of course roll / taxi backwards. It is not possible to get stuck in the grass even without taking off vertically it has a high thrust to weight ratio and so can simply power through any mud or muck I make it a point to taxi circles in the grass aroundA10's that get stuck, it does carry more air to ground ordinance than most other planes it actually carries more bombs then everything but the A10 and of course it can carry up to 28 laser-guided rockets. It only takes one to destroy an unarmored vehicle, currently it is also the only aircraft capable of a true JDAM ripple, this is a bombing technique whereby you make a single pass dropping all 12 of your bombs each one seeking out its own Target this is particularly useful and devastating when attacking enemy air bases and Sam sites these bombs have more than a 20 mile range which makes the use of the agm-122 almost pointless basically you can take out an entire basis Sam systems in a single pass without actually getting close enough to see the base. That I am aware of it is also the only aircraft in game that can share its Target list with other aircraft. You can take off get up to altitude head towards a Target area bring up the f10 map Mark targets on it then go back into the cockpit and import all those targets and every other harrier in the server can do the same thing allowing one person to designate targets while another one attacks them. All you have to do on the display is click menu CAS and press recall and it will import all the targets that are listed as Mark points on the f10 map. All you have to do then is fly within 20 miles of them and release your weapons. to import more targets or refresh the list you do have to hit right control shift and 8 there are tons of videos on this point being it is an absolutely devastating weapons platform far more capable than the A10 and can fly more than twice as fast as an A10 it can also go from cold and dark to rearmed and airborne in 45 seconds or be shut down for repairs in less than 20 seconds although repair still take 170 seconds my point is it can get in the fight it takes a fair amount of damage to bring a harrier down it can land anywhere take off from anywhere and be right back in the fight right away and one of the main advantages despite what everybody claims is it's lack of range is that after you unleash Your hell of 12 guided munitions that are guaranteed to hit their target when released you can land at a forward operating base only miles from the action rearm and be right back before most other attack aircraft can even find their targets. And I usually end up moving on to the next base leaving the one underneath me in smoldering wreckage just as the A10s finally show up because they have to fly back to base and rearm and their maximum speed is 329 where is the harriers is 550, the a-10 can only reach this speed when almost out of fuel and stripped bear whereas the harrier can reach and maintain this speed when fully loaded and fueled. Everybody started to like the A10 because of the Gulf War but if you read about what general Norman schwartzkopf said about the war you will discover that the truth is he said that the real hero of the war were the harriers not the a10s also you will note that he stated that the harriers were so close to the front lines that they never once during the entire War needed to refuel although I have found video of one refueling during that time. But I think that was just some sort of combat patrol it never technically needed to, you do get about 45 minutes to an hour of flight time on one full tank of gas which is $7,700 lb of fuel which of course can be extended to 12,500 lb with external tanks but again I never use them because harriers don't operate that far from the front lines and there's always a carrier offshore or a forward operating base nearby

I am going to use it left handed and use my mouse as a look around tool and use the side buttons on my mouse as a throttle control because I cant afford vr or a trackir. Is that a good option?

Why are you using a rating scale of 3-5 with an increment of 0.5? (I doubt you’ll ever use 1 and 2) Why not just use a scale of either 1-5 or 1-10 with an increment of 1 ?

Hi Cap! Could you help me? I am quite new to DCS, I have about 40 hours on FC3 planes and I want to try something new, I can’t decide between Harrier - Hornet, Harrier looks amazing ( VTOL etc.) and so does Hornet, but Hornet seems to be more difficult to learn. Am I right? And which plane is more fun? What do you think guys? Help me decide pls ! :-D

From my memory the only NATO aircraft out of early access are the A-10C F-15C A-10A M2000C not Shute in the last one since Razbam is more or less completely reworking the mirage from scratch

Ghostworrior I was thinking the same thing. All tho the Warthog is getting a graphics overhaul, the systems are finished. That’s more or less what I mean (and I think Devs mean) when an aircraft is taken out of EA. Would be cool to get datalink in the F-15 tho. Maybe implement it like the Flanker’s basic datalink tied to the AWACS.

Just wish ED or Heatblur would take on a Harrier project. spend lots of time in Harrier, however with the constantly changing system operations and no clear roadmap regarding future updates etc it can get frustrating. Msged Razbam loads of times asking for roadmap etc and get jack shit response. Poor customer service. Realy disappointing as a fully complete Harrier upto say the Hornet or Tomcat level would be simply amazing considering how unique and operationally successful its has been. Peace.

Some DLC I see on Steam that are cheap e.g Mig 29 being cheap but I see a couple more DLC with Mig 29 soooo which is the proper DLC with the full plane? etc same goes with other DLC like campaigns with planes then planes being separate DLC wtf I'm confused. Also is the game fine on Steam or should I download from website. Reason for this is games that are downloaded through official websites is what I prefer but I don't have credit cards or anything to buy stuff online. So my local store should be selling (which BTW doesn't) either have physical ways to buy things or redeemable codes. And finally if its possible plz make a vid guide to play with keyboad and mouse I don't have joystick.

The mig29, f15, su27, su33 and all the cheap modules are what we refer to as low fidelity. What that means is that inside the cockpit you cannot click on the buttons or rotary switches. This means you must bind the necessary buttons to your joystick and/or keyboard. The flight models in game are still very realistics, but maybe the radar systems are less realistic. You can buy the whole set of these low fidelity aircraft ( I think it's about 6 planes) as the Flaming Cliffs 3 bundle which is much cheaper than buying them as individuals better value for money.

The MiG-29 cames with a (free) included Campaign, called "Over the Hump", most DCS aircrafts include one free Campaign .. after you have completed this included Campaign, you can purchase additional Campaigns .. these "DLC" campaigns are just that, a Campaign, not an aircraft ... the fact that a Campaign is much cheaper than an aircraft should be a clear indication that it does not include any aircraft, isnt it?

There are two kinds of aircrafts in DCS world. The simplified ones (also known as FC3 level) like the free Su-25t are intended for those who don't want to learn complex systems and just want to get started quickly. These aircrafts don't have clickable cockpits. The complex ones (also known as study level) like the free TF-51d are intended for those who want to dedicate themselves to a specific aircraft and learn how to fly it. You can tell if the plane is simplified or complex by looking at it's store page name. The complex planes have "DCS:" in front of their names while the simplified ones don't. For example the "DCS: F/A-18C Hornet" is a complex plane while the "F-15C for DCS World" is a simplified plane. Only exception is the "DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3" which is just a bundle of those simplified planes. Both Steam and standalone version are the same. ED's own store also has a loyalty program. Playing without a joystick won't give you a very good experience mostly due to the fact that flying an airplane requires precise inputs. Getting even a cheap joystick will significantly improve your experience. If you are not old enough to have a credit card, ask your parents to buy the thing for you and then give them the money. I bought quite a few games that way.

It's amazing. You won't be disappointed. Just be prepared for the very steep learning curve, there's A LOT to learn! but it's a joy to fly.

The *systems* on the F/A-18 are pretty complicated and can take a long time to learn / master. However, at its core, the Hornet is not a difficult aircraft to fly, especially with fly-by-wire. Your biggest problem is that it may spoil you for everything else. :)

Hopefully Razbam will get around to to adding one later (The Harrier "Plus" model used by the Spanish Navy and some USMC Units has an Air-to-Air radar and can fire AMRAAMs). If we keep begging Razbam, they might listen :)

EA = avoid , especially if it is DCS EA. Only exception, perhaps is F-14 since it is really done waaaay better then all other released or EA modules. Unfortunately i cant recommend Harrier, not yet in any case. It works few weeks, then something is broken, then that broken thing gets fixed only 5 new to be broken and so on and so on for years now... SKIP IT.

Obviously just look at Star Citizen - it is in alpha for 7 years, first release date was 2014, and ppl are still throwing money at it despite it being broken and utterly late. ED is just doing the same thing in a less rude manner - they at least offer all modules in game, not just as some jpeg picture and concept art. What im just trying to say is that i cant recommend most of EA DCS modules even to my enemies, let alone neutral or friendly ppl. Especially if you are new and want to learn it - manual is outdated, module performs 1 week this way, 2nd week that way, 3rd week it doesnt work at all...YT videos outdated or based on some feature which is now changed etc etc.. list is long.
