George talking about the thunder runs brought me back. We used to see M1s just barreling down the roads in Iraq just spoiling for a fight. My unit loved it because it meant less attention would be paid to us, and the tanks often cleared out some of the smaller but still nasty IEDs that would have destroyed our trucks or dismounts.

About RWR for tanks, contemporary tanks can not only detect incoming threats but have multilayered active protection for deferent types and velocities to if threat. Some can even sense a signal for IEDs or belly charges and disrupt it. No specifics... It's all a question of cost and the more expensive the system on board the more expensive the protective measures protecting it.

One thing I think George misunderstood the question on the turret taking a hit in urban terrain. The answer is yes, the crew needs to pay attention as hitting a barrel or turret on a building or tree can do all sorts of bad things from jamming the turret to bending the barrel. This isn't as real issue if your stationary and rotating the turret. But if your moving and the turret hits something your going to get a dressing down to say the least.
@grimreapers

Yes I can imagine the energies involved in this kind of contact are MASSIVE.

@Grim Reapers yeah, saw the aftermath of an Abrams sliding down a hill at Hoensfel, Germany, one of our training areas when I was with 1AD. Hit a tree, with the barrel, bent it a few degrees and required the turret to be forcibly rotated back to center to be transported to third shop to fix. Thankfully, nobody got hurt in the tank. Wasn't the tank crews fault either just bad luck. Also, in some areas slowing top speed. On softer ground the tread sinks in, and there is more resistance on the track. Doesn't stop a tank like it would a wheeled vehicles but it still slows it down some.

During 73 Eastling there was a stand off with a platoon of T-72s and 2 Bradley Fighting vehicles, Eagle group and Ghost group had lost comms, so they sent out 2 Bradley fighting vehicles from Ghost to link them back up, when they saw little dots ahead and thought it was Eagle Group, a T-72 backed out of its underground position and they knew they were fcked,then somebody calls "tank front" and there's a tank 4 feet away below them in its underground fighting position, its 25 mm bullets bounced off the T-72 and they backing out for there life and now all the tanks are moving, turrets start turning towards them, The first Tow missile takes out that tank, the second Tow fires but lands 15 feet in front of the Bradley fighting vehicle, then just by luck the second Bradley takes out 2 of the foward tanks, now there both empty ,which ment somebody had to leave the vehicle to reload the Tows, his wing man pulls a reload drill backs up ,pulls foward and takes out the tank that just got its turret on the other Bradley, when Bradelys from the Eagle show up and they re link up with Eagle...they survived a stand off with a platoon of T-72s.

Loved the video @Grim Reapers! Can't wait for the next video man! The thing with the Sabot Rounds is that they're made from depleted Uranium 236 or 238. Once they break through a Solid object, they shatter and turn anything that the Fragments come into contact with into a Litteral Puddle of Liquid. It's the one thing that was used when Hussein didn't tell the Iraqi Citizens to stay off the roads and his troops were Attacking the Abrams Tanks with Vans and Trucks basically using their own Citizens as Human Shields, the Abrams crews were using the Sabot Rounds to deal with their Attackers and the Vans and Trucks could just be Cleaned out, Repaired and sold off; just literally hose out the Occupants. As for Laser Rangefinders, from what I remember reading up on the M48 Patton Tanks from Vietnam, the A2 and A3 Models had a Laser Rangefinder and Infrared Equipment. Not sure why not many people still use them today, maybe it has something to do with gun design for the Tanks. If you want another tank that can fire an ATGM from the Barrel of it's main gun, the American M551 Sheridan Airborne Assault Tank/Reconnaissance Tank from the Vietnam War could fire the MGM-151 Shilagagh Missile through it's 152 millimeter (6 inch Naval) Gun. The Main Downside of the Design was not only how the Gun was Loaded (Caseless Ammunition where the Rounds were Sown onto the Propellant Charges with a Mechanical Breach that had a roughly 30 second Reload time) but the Fact that it was an Aluminum/Titanium Alloy Hull (like the M113 APC's) with a Steel Turret on top of it. Interestingly Enough, the Thunder Runs started in Vietnam with the M48 Patton Tanks using Spare track Links along the side as a Fast Way of clearing the Highways for mines. If there wasn't an Explosion, the Road was clear and the Supply Convoy could get moving. If a Mine Did Explode, However, The Engineers would come in and Look for any more but because the Explosion happened to the Side of the Tank, only the Spare Track links were Blown and the Tank could still be used. Last but not least, The T-90 Tank. The Closet thing to an RWR on any tank is the Infrared Detectors that are commonly referred to as the Eyes of the Tank. It's got a Field of View of 35 Degrees to each side of the Barrel (Hence why there's 1 on each side) but once it Detects a ATGM has been locked onto or fired at it, the System will automatically turn the Turret to face where the Missile was Fired from and have the ERA face the Missile. I've got a Mission for the "Stormworks: Build and Rescue" Community using the "Search and Destroy DLC" (aka the Weapons DLC) that I'd love to see you guys try and do in DCS to get a General Feeling of What the Chances of Success is. Let me know what you think about it and if you're interested in hearing more about the Mission for the Stormworks Community and I'll catch you in your next video!

There's a story, no idea if it's urban myth or not, that a British tank crew during WWII has a tank, I think it was a Comet, that was for some reason much faster than the others in the troop. After a contact they discovered 20mm rounds stuck in the armour. Apparently the tank had been a training tank and was constructed of mild steel, hence why it was so fast. The story goes that the crew kept the tank as it was so fast that the Germans struggled to hit it. I spent a couple of years in an armoured brigade in Germany in the 80's. I was in APCs. On a move we'd put tins of potatoes on the engine louvres. By the time we'd get to our next location the potatoes had cooked.

No idea which drones can tie into it; never seen a reaper, predator or global hawk on the network and manned fixed wing aircraft (to my knowledge) are not capable. 1) The reason why Brits stick to rifled guns on their tanks is simple - they just love their HESH (high explosive squash head) rounds which can not be fired effectively from smooth bore guns. HESH doesn't penetrate armor, but sends massive shock wave that breaks off chunks of tank's own armor (create a lot of spalling) that then fly all over the internal part of the tank, hitting crew and equipment inside. Pretty effective and doesn't lose "penetration" over distance, but... Sideskirts and cage armor will mitigate HESH completely. Also, effectiveness depends a lot on place you hit; for maximum effect you want a flat surface. On top of it all, composite armor and spall liners defeat it, too... So, that is why pretty much everybody else gave up on HESH for anti-tank role and use it to demolish concrete fortifications. But Brits still stick to it... 2) Another problem with IR tiles is - mud and dirt, besides what you mentioned. Yes, they can make a tank look like smth else on thermal, but if mud and other filth are stuck to tank side (which is very likely on a battlefield), then the guy looking at you through thermal will see smth weird and suspicious about the "car" and its contrast with the background and might decide to fire at it anyway, just to make sure, or switch to clear channel and see it is in fact a tank... So, in the end, that system (which also Swedes played with) is just an expensive technology demonstrator...

Cap, just for reference, a hollow point bullet will overpenetrate. It simply depends on velocity vs target thickness but even handgun rounds can do it with HP ammo. Modern HP ammo IS better at energy dump but even 9mm can still zip through. The .45ACP will tend to do this due to typically lower velocity but modern versions do better here as well. Ideally, yes it stops in the target though but ya know, physics is fickle :D

But China never really use much ztz96b, the one you referring have many are ztz96a. and that does not mean ztz99a is small number, it have over 1200 units type 99 within PLA army by 2020. And ZTZ99A literally becomes the core of PLA heavy armor battalion, just like m1a2 abrams or leopard 2a6m. U literally put a 2nd generation tank here against all other 3rd generation. its quite normal why someone raise eyebrow here tbh

@@grimreapers that is accurate though, the type 99A does have active defense system in real life. You should not set it up so western tanks always win. Run a simulation with M1A2 with trophy active defense system vs. Chinese Type 99A with their active defense system to make it fair.

Well the fact that the Abrams is given longer range for some reason makes me wonder how fair it really is. Moreover i noticed attackers from the left had to crest a hill near the middle whilst attackers from the riggt were stationary. Not sure if that would have any effect. So you just want to make a no-brainer American sweep and pick 96b? If this is the case, you should choose type59, which is not only worse, but also exported to many poor countries, and it often appears in the melee of warlords in the Middle East, so it is relatively well-known.

George says the Abrams should have the same Range as the Leopard, but he is wrong there: Abrams and Leopard 2 up to A5 have the same Rheinmetall 120mm L/44, but from Leopard 2A6 upward like the ones here, they have the longer 120mm L/55 Gun, which gives them a higher Muzzle-Speed and thereby more Range and Precision.

The Americans use higher pressure rounds and archive the same V0 as the Leopard with its longer cannon. And the Leopard isnt any more accurate than the Abrams gun.
@majorix1
@majorix1 Жыл бұрын
@@lobster8009 That is incorrect. That was the case for Leopard up to A5. But with newer models for APFSDS Germany uses DM63 which has (fired in L/55) a V0 of 1750 m/s , while Abrams L/44 with M829A3 has a V0 of 1555 m/s. I don't have a V0 for M829A4, but afaik its combustive part should be similar to A3, so V0 should be around the same.
