INS does not depend on anything but itself, however. That's a rather big advantage in case the cruise missile hits the fan.

Vector mode (VEC) is intended for when an AWACS or GCI station is vectoring the pilot for interception with a target; as such, it requires a datalink connection, and until DCS/Heatblur implements the issuing of datalink steering and targeting commands, it won't be of much use. But if it were implemented, and you were getting good datalink messages, you would get a course line aiming you where the datalink source was sending you, whether it's a geographic point or a target. You don't have range info because there's no datalink target. The precision command mode (PCD) that's paired with AWL is the same as vector mode, expect that while vector mode is 2D (heading and range only), PCD includes altitude/pitch commands. This is like how the F-106 fighter could almost be 100% ground controlled after takeoff, and the pilot only needed to squeeze the trigger and manage the RADAR. If you're in PCD mode with good datalink messages, you would get ACLS-style navigation info (pitch and heading bars); indeed, because of the 3-axis pointing, that's why AWL and PCD are paired together in the same mode. You could even use the autopilot in coupled PCD/AWL mode to turn aircraft control over to AWACS/GCI entirely.

Manual mode: Wind direction compensation. Set course to desired traveling course and heading to where to keep the nose to be able to travel along the course line. Typically a back up.

Nice well done are you a pilot?

As far as manual steering mode, I presume that's just for pilot reference without TACAN, like if you wanted to put the BRC on your displays and still keep a heading bug separate. And as regards to following a track from one waypoint to the next, I think that's what the PT TO PT selector on the CAP is for. When it's off, the course to follow to a waypoint is a direct course, but when it's on, then while automatic waypoint sequencing isn't available, it'll still calculate steering info based on a straight line from WP1 to WP2, then WP2 to WP3.

You can use IP bomb mode, insert IP point , insert IP to tagert offset, use diamond on HUD mark the IP like TGT mode, but mark IP instead tagert itself, the diamond will jump to the target according to your offset data .the rest things are same as in TGT mode

It is nice to be able to manually place the heading bug when you are flying magnetic vectors (from charts or ATC). Easier to check visually the bug that remembering a number, e.g. 204º. Maybe the autopilot also has a mode to follow the selected heading, I have not checked that yet. About the missing CDI when navigating waypoints, it is still possible to fly the desired track like you would do with an ADF or an RMI. E.g. if you want to fly a track 090º to the wpt, fly in the general direction and when the waypoint arrow deviates to the left, change heading still more to the left until it gets back to 090º, then go back to heading 090º. If the arrow keeps deviating in the same direction (e.g. left) maybe you have some crosswind pushing you off course to the south: next time you center the waypoint arrow, fly a lower heading (e.g. 085º) and see what happens; just keep guessing the wind correction. In this case, where the heading (where the nose of the aircraft points) and the track (the path you are actually flying) are different, it is also helpful to manually set the heading bug to the desired heading for the wind correction that you have guessed.

I was taught when learning to fly that the heading bug can be used to mark a heading for reference as mentioned above. Example is your flying M270 but have been told/know you need to intercept M360 at 5 DME; so you stick 360 on the heading bug whilst your flight 270 course. On my aircraft the autopilot follows the heading bug but you it can also follow a VOR radial for example, the AP is following Radial 090 from a VOR but I might have the heading bug set for an immediate reference to the next heading to turn turn at a specific DME. Also very helpful when you're flying hold patterns inbound and outbound to a hold point or RNAV. And spot on above with using to set the desired heading for WCA. Hope that helps.

I keep killing my ins I think when avoiding incoming missiles don't know it's its an over g or something but it's a pain in the butt. The vdi will black out when I'm pulling hard if I let up it comes back on, if I don't let up it stays that way. From the front seat I don't seem to be able to find if there is a way to fix it.

Could the Manual mode be for autopilot? Maybe you could set a heading for the autopilot to fly

If the airport was north of you but the runway was aligned east/west, you would have to intercept the course of the runway by circling onto that course. Like intercepting a VOR radial in civilian aviation.

^^^this^^^ for DCS purposes - Nav tells you which direction to fly to get to the runway...heading bug can be set to the direction you need to face in order to land. If you want/need to fly without the F10 map, navigating with adb or tacan etc. is a must have skill.

Stopped watching at 4 minutes. I can't handle all the acronyms. I have no idea what the hell he is talking about and no way in hell I can't remember all that when in flight. LOL I think I will pass on the F14. I suffer from PTSD and my memory sucks these days. I need to keep it simple. Still great series as usual

Most of them you will find in the F-14 manual. Knowing what the acronym means sure helps, but sometimes I just see the acronym as a word itself for something, without knowing the exact definition. For example, HSI is another word for the compass rose on steroids. After a half minute thinking, I remembrr it's the Horizontal Situation Indicator. But I don't need to know the full definition, I just know HSI = compass rose on steroids. Is like learning vocab for a new language.
