The Viggen is such a pretty plane. I like the "Double Bubble" canopies on the trainer version. I honestly didn't know that the Strike Eagle was capable of using Fox-1s (AIM-7s)

The soviets were so paranoid that they would be invaded by NATO that they built their power grid with double and triple backups. That's why Ukraine still has power. And soviet military is built to be used on soviet terrain, close to home. It's kinda funny that we were scared of a red invasion when they were more scared.

With the Kola map you almost must have the Viggan. It just doesn’t feel complete without that iconic jet. I am still trying to wrap my head around it, but what a marvelous aircraft. Perfectly made for that terrain

Cute scenario, but it never, EVER would have happened in real life. I met several Polish soldiers, in Warsaw, in February 1988. They were drunk to the point that they didn't care if anyone heard what they had to say. Through a translator, they openly said that if the Soviets ever told the Poles to get ready to invade Western Europe, the moment they were given ammunition they would have turned around and attacked the Soviets. Their hatred for the Communists was that great that the Russians knew to put their best forces behind the Poles (and the Hungarians, the Czechs, etc.) knowing what those countries would do if given the opportunity to fight. The Poles would have turned around and fought their overlords than attack NATO. Oh, the Polish soldiers also said the only people they hated more than the Russians were the French and British. Why? Because those countries promised to come to Poland's defense in 1939 if they were ever invaded. When Germany entered eastern Poland and the French/British forces didn't help it created tremendous distrust and hatred that I bet still lingers today. Oh, and they loved Americans.

I've heard about Czechs saying the same thing (except for 1938). They would have changed sides at the first shot.

Wasn't the RAF still using f4 phantoms in 1989?
@Wien19383 ай бұрын
The F3 Tornado was in service but not in the Rhine/West Germany region because it really couldn't cope in a dogfight with much, so the FGR2s were still being used until the early 1990s.
@ivorharden3 ай бұрын
@Wien1938 thought so. To be honest, with out a gunpod, the f4 wasn't the best of fighters. If only the RAF had brought the f14.
@Wien19383 ай бұрын
@@ivorharden To be honest, the RAF Phantoms performed well at low level where most RAF Germany planes were expected to fight. The Tomcat is more manoeuvable and has greater thrust/weight but it is also bigger and would not be able to use it's abilities at height owing to how dangerous the surface to air environment would have been.
@ivorharden3 ай бұрын
@Wien1938 I think the Soviets would have known about the RAF Phantom with spey engines, so they would have enticed them into higher altitudes.
@Wien19383 ай бұрын
@@ivorharden The reason everyone on the northern sector (where the RAF were deployed) operated under 250ft was the danger of SAMs. Fighting at height was thought to be a very rapid suicide.
