Oh part of today's lesson we do already, finally we know something here the oil stoning of our hardened steel tools we do that and storage is everything oiled and ready for that next use. We do come here to learn you are great in your grinding work the prep, the wheel maintenance and other things (pre-coolant temperature balance) a likely hundreds more to follow and share with us, we are happy to be here and you for sharing with the rest of us. Side wheel work is a new lesson coming up. Keith talked about you and I think you sons boring bar in his most resent video, he is a really nice guy. I am surprised you can just hold that 7 inch bar in the "V" block by hand instead of mounting it, nothing here, I do not know just asking about it Steve. Great "V" block results none the less.

Hi Active Atom, These are special bench stones that have been ground flat using a diamond wheel. Here is a link to Robin R. video where I learned of them. I held the test bar by hand to apply even pressure along the V. If I used a clamp I I would have a greater chance of error. I learned this a long time ago the clamp position and clamp pressure will greatly affect the part. I will have to demonstrate this in future videos. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoeviaanbNWcb7s Steve

Beautiful work Steve and lot's of good information on precision grinding. It looks like there are three small tapped or counter-bored holes at the bottom of the vee. Are they for bolting a stop block into the vee or for something else?
@SolidRockMachineShopInc6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, Those are 10-32 tapped holes. They are multi use but the primary use is for extra fine adjustment of parts that need that extra little pressure point to dial the part in. You have to be very careful so that you don't distort the part. I used them a couple of times already just to get that extra .0001" adjustment and so far it has worked great. Steve
@bcbloc026 жыл бұрын
In your first setup with the v where you had it bolted like it normally goes any out of squareness in your block would amplify your error readings on the bar.
@SolidRockMachineShopInc6 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, It wasn't that bad to begin with and I corrected most of it by clamping the other way. Here is the Instagram taking the reading from the bottom of the block after regrinding. instagram.com/p/BrI9oX4gisZ/ The bottom has been re squared to the mounting side. Steve
@adamgalowitz11296 жыл бұрын
Great video. Question: any circumstances where you would side grind the second vee (say to avoid removing the block for a second setup)?
@SolidRockMachineShopInc6 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, That is a very good question. Sometimes you have no choice but to grind with the side of the wheel but if I can grind with the bottom of the wheel I always prefer that. I have much better control and accuracy with the bottom of the wheel than with the sides. Steve
@somebodyelse66736 жыл бұрын
Do you dress the side of the wheel when side grinding is necessary?
@SolidRockMachineShopInc6 жыл бұрын
@@somebodyelse6673 Yes! Also, you need to cup the side wheel so that you have only a small lip that actually touches the part. Steve
@James-fs4rn6 жыл бұрын
Nice! Was there stressed relief when you ground the V, which caused the part to move? Thanks!
@SolidRockMachineShopInc6 жыл бұрын
That's possible but I think it was the way I clamped it. could see it when I tried clamping it the same way on the Square Block and then switched to 2 hold down clamps. Steve

Thanks so much for the video. I have a very nice 6x12 BS . And trying to grind within .0005 now knowing how small that is , i cant imagine how to get to under 50mill.
@SolidRockMachineShopInc6 жыл бұрын
If your grinder is in good shape with just a little practice and proper methods you will be able to hit .0005 without much effort. The 2 biggest things to master in my opinion are wheel selection and wheel dressing. Heat will be one of the biggest enemies to control. Steve

@@SolidRockMachineShopInc I know that the table ways were scraped in, the guy I bought it from said that he was told that it was "re-conditioned" sometime in the early '90's, and had seen little use since then. After a touch with the stone, the ways showed no sign of wear, they only needed a bit of surface rust removed. Power is the big roadblock on it right now, and I'll need to acquire the needed bits like a diamond dresser and tools for changing wheels ... and more wheels, of course. My "Franken-verter" can't handle spindle and pump motors at the same time. Mag chuck power is an old tube supply, but it does seem to work O.K. It's a D-8, big and very heavy. I sometimes wonder if I haven't bitten off more than I can chew with this one.
