Grinding with Reverse Centers.

In this video we will grind a test piece in a Harig grind fixture using reverse centers. By using reverse centers we eliminate the need to lap the centers in the part and achieve extreme circularity.

Gday, I know exactly how you feel with your thyroid, I ended up having mine totally removed and now I’m on 350mg of thyroxine, it took a bloody long time to get my levels right and when there not you feel absolutely miserable, my levels have been steady for about 2 years now and that’s a blessing, the thyroid is like the computer of the body and when the computer gets a virus is no bloody good for anything, take care mate, cheers Matty

@@SolidRockMachineShopInc that’s very true, I was on tablets to keep my heart on check and they had to be taken at a set time without fail, my heart used to beat that hard you’d swear it was trying to get out, terrible feeling, there’s that many things that can be affected by the thyroid function and when you start to read into it it can get quite scary to be honest, mine enlarged to the stage it cut the blood supply to the calcium glad and all my teeth went brittle and effect some joints, best things the doctors done was taking mine out, you forget what feeling normal is like after a while and as you know it’s a long slow journey to get on top again...

You've given almost an exact description of what I've experienced over the past few years. I know thyroid issues are in the family history. I'd have gotten it checked if my wallet, checkbook and another part of me wasn't still puckered from the last time I got checked "just to be sure." That was over 12 years ago.

You cannot use a TSH blood test only to diagnose thyroid disease. It's a flawed test with a 80% false negative result. This test was based on only 200 people that were supposedly healthy and assumed to have normal thyroid function. These 200 people were used to determine the "normal range" for everyone else. Beyond that, each lab has it's own set of ranges for lab results on tests so it can vary depending on who does the testing. Back in the day doctors would diagnose thyroid disease solely by listening to a patient and his/her symptoms. You need an FT3 and FT4 blood test (TSH can be used with these but not alone) and if your doctor won't give it to you, find a new doctor. Stop the thyroid madness website is a great resource and has a section for which labs to order, why it matters and how to interpret your lab results. I've used that website for years and my doctor also uses that website as a resource.

@@kathyb7126 Doing your own "homework" is one way to keep a doctor on his toes. My sister did that with hers, he didn't like it much but he later had to admit that it made him better. One peave I have about a new doctor is some want to fiddle and experiment when you already have something that is working well for you. Sometimes you have to be blunt, and tell them that you won't be their "lab rat." Not while I'm paying the bill. At that point, if the arrogance gets so thick you can smell it, it's time to look elsewhere.

It's great to watch another presentation on grinding. I was wondering how you were doing not seeing any videos for a while. It's great to see that your feeling better. That sine plate is a great idea, I could use one about 12" between pivot points. How would it work by using the balls between center drill of the part and the grinding fixture cone without a stand off? As always I have learned a lot from your videos.

@@SolidRockMachineShopInc I've had indicators that didn't move at all. Usually after I made the mistake of loaning them to some klutz. A long time ago I made some 5C collet blocks with odd numbers of sides. 5, 7, 8, 9 &10 sides. I was very satisfied when they all came out to be with in .0002" for all the sides on each block. And I did not use a dividing head to set the angle of the sides relative to each other. Clamped a piece of 1" Thompson rod in a collet I knew ran to with in a tenth. Put the rod in a vee block (yes with a spreader, vee shaped too, keeps the clamping forces evenly distributed). Place a large enough magnetic parallel on the chuck and grind flat (pin type, shop made, used as a sacrificial surface to establish the plane the grinder would actually produce)*. Use a solid angle ground with a sine bar. The solid angle also rested on a freshly ground magnetic parallel. Rough grind all sides, semi finish with a light finish pass. All the grinding was done on a Harig probably 40 years old the had been used daily on three shifts. It probably was in use 8+ hours per day. *Our grinders along with our other machinery was used to support production in an automotive plant that in addition to assembly also had a Press Room, Engine Division and an Axle Division for rear ends and front suspension parts. Between the Die Room, Tool Room and people working out of satellite shops at one time we had about 350 people. Of which about 60 to 65% would be doing machining of some sort at least part of each day. Sometimes when you needed a mill or a lathe or a surface grinder none were open because they were all tied up.

What is the reasoning for wanting to grind with the grinder wheel rotation rather than against it?? Grinding with the wheel rotation your small drive motor would have act as a brake to keep the part from rotating at wheel speed. I work in the automotive machining field and crankshafts and camshafts are ground against the wheel rotation and the speed differential is huge for a fine finish. Great to see you back!!!!

Hi Andrew, It is the same concept as climb and conventional milling. With a grinder it is less noticeable than milling. I know that it is opposite what you normally find in industry but it is an advantage when using coolant. When coolant gets on the belt it sometimes slips when grinding against the wheel rotation and the part stops in mid grind. You don't have this problem grinding with the wheel rotation. If your cuts are to large then using the motor as a break may be a problem but with normal cuts I have not had issues using my Suburban Master grind this way. Steve

You also need to be careful because the symptoms of low cortisol and high cortisol can mimic each other. If you have low cortisol and start taking supplements to lower it further in the belief that your cortisol is high, it's dangerous and vice versa. Certain supplements support the adrenals over all and help no matter if your cortisol is high or low. Those are the supplements we started with. I'm not sure if dad linked it but vitamin C is also important since most of your vitamin C is stored in your adrenals, when you're stressed (physically or mentally, your adrenals can't tell the difference) your vitamin C gets rapidly used up. adrenalfatigue.org/vitamin-c-adrenal-function-stress/ As with everything, do your own research and check with your doctor. Hi Brian, Thanks! The drive wheel was all done on the mill. I put the the drive wheel in a spin fixture and used a 1/4" end mill above the center line of the part and side milled the belt groove. Because the end mill was above center the bottom of the end mill cut and left serrations in the groove which grip the o-ring very nicely. Should work will even with coolant getting on the o-ring. Hi Steve, when you are measuring how round the part was on the surface plate, do you use the same method to identify taper in the part? Is finding the high spot at each point a valid comparison or is the part in the fixture not parallel to the surface plate?

Yes, this will show taper also. When measuring the part in the fixture you are checking the roundness of the part to the centers. If the centers in the part are not perfect they can hide the true roundness of the part.

There are tons of guides about surface finishes online. It is a pretty big subject. Generally (here in the US) they are talking about microinches, which is to say, how many microinches (millionths of an inch, 0.000001", 0.0254 microns) between the peaks or valleys that the tools leave as they cut. There are lots of different specifications and ways to measure it depending on the design intent.

Mat 24:21 “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened. "Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There!' do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you beforehand. For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” There is a good chance that after this pandemic, the world as we know it will be changed from one degree or another, with most of the people in this world begging for it. This pandemic has Satan's fingerprints all over it. The speaker of the house tried to force, in the relief bill, a digital currency with digital wallets controlled by the Federal reserve bank, which is a privately owned bank outside government control. Many believe as I do, believers and non believers, that this pandemic will lead from the crashing of this current monetary system to a new cashless digital one. There are articles already written by United Nation officials claiming that this virus is being transmitted by the exchange of cash. People who buy into this will beg for the cashless society that the elites have been pushing for many years. Through fear of this pandemic there is a mad rush for vaccines and medicines to combat it. You have the world's richest people, like Bill Gates, governments all over the world and the pharmaceutical industry pushing hard for mandatory vaccines. Bill Gates is working with companies like ID 2020 to combine vaccines with some form of implantable digital identification. Look how accurate Rev. 18 speaks of this. Many Christians don't realize that Revelation 18, written 2000 years ago, speaks of a future event that I believe hasn't happened yet. What's happening today with this virus may be part of it, emphasis on 'may be'. It's easier to see prophecy's fulfillment looking back on history, it's harder to see it when it hasn't happened yet. A quick breakdown of Revelation 18, it talks about the last world empire with three main aspects to it: a one world government, ruled by the Antichrist; a one world economic system; and a one world religious system. In Revelation 17 God judges the religious system of this empire and in Revelation 18, He judges the financial system of this empire. It speaks of the world's richest people controlling the kings of the earth with their wealth and it speaks of how great is these people's wealth. You get down to verse 23 and 24 and it tells us the main reason God is judging this system. I believe this is also the judgment James spoke about in the first few verses of James chapter 5. Rev 18:23 “And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. Rev 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.” What's important about this is that in verse 23 the word "sorceries" is φαρμακεία. It is the same word that we get pharmacy and pharmaceuticals from. Thayer's greek dictionary defines it this way: pharmakeia Thayer Definition: 1) the use or the administering of drugs 2) poisoning 3) sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it 4) metaphorically the deceptions and seductions of idolatry Part of Speech: noun feminine When the Bible speaks about magical arts it always uses a different Greek word for sorcery than the one that is used in Rev 18. So in my opinion, a more accurate and literal translation would be 'by their pharmaceuticals they deceived the nations. I have been teaching this for about a decade now. What's interesting today, the last I checked, there are 13 major pharmaceuticals in this world and they are all owned by the rich elitist. Those who are pushing for this last days empire which has not yet taken place. God shows us the future judgment of these individuals for the crimes they have committed against humanity on a global scale. Is this pandemic going to lead to mandatory vaccines across the globe? Some countries have already said there will be mandatory vaccines as a result. Will these mandatory vaccines be part of the past events that lead to the judgment in Rev. 18? What is going to be in these pharmaceuticals that causes death on a global scale? Are these pharmaceuticals going to be tied with micro chipping that leads to the mark of the beast? We will have to wait and see if what's going on now is tied to this. One thing that is certain though is the identity of the guilty parties: the world's elite who own everything, the politicians of this world who are bought by the elite, and their pharmaceuticals that are controlled by the elite. All this done on a global scale, which may be like the one we are in the midst of now.

Part 2 How do these wicked people get away with this? How are they going to control the masses? It will be by deception and Satan's greatest tool FEAR. Here is what God's Word tells us about Satan's power. Heb 2:14 “Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.” God says that Satan has the power of death, and it is through fear of death that he controls and herds the masses. Through the fear of death Satan has most of those in this world under his bondage. Look at the fear that is gripping the world today. People are freaking out over this pandemic and this fear is being stroked daily by the elite owned media and politicians. The good news is that a child of God has the power to overcome Satan's greatest weapon! This power is God's love. 2Ti 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Joh 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.” 1Jn 4:8 “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” Rev 12:7 “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” The tribulation saints overcame the power of the devil, which is the fear of death, because they were washed in the blood of the Lamb; they had no fear of death. Satan's greatest weapon was neutralized because they loved the Lord more than their own lives. I can't imagine how devastating this is to Satan that every time he is overcome by a believer, it will be an embarrassing slap in his face reminding him of his utter defeat when the Lord Jesus laid His life down on the cross 2,000 years ago so that we can have eternal life. This is one reason why Satan hates the blood of Jesus, because it gives little, insignificant people like us power over him. Paul tells us how great this power we have in Christ is. 1Co 15:22 “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.” 1Co 15:50 “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY." "O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING? O HADES, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY?" The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” Right now I am watching to see the global direction Satan is plotting for this world by the fear of death. Will it be great strides or small? I believe because it is global in scope that it will be a big move by Satan. Already we see the power of this system to lock down the world through fear. We see the players of Rev. 18 pushing their devilish agendas very hard. We see a push to a new monetary system as the old one collapses. We see the greatest bank heist in the history of mankind taking place right before our eyes, and it is the international bankers who are the thieves and the small people like us the victims. The Bible says Satan comes as a roaring lion seeking to devour and as an angel of light deceiving the masses. He comes to kill, steal and destroy. He wears a black hat and a white hat at his choosing, I believe we are seeing both in this pandemic. Don't be surprised to see Satan set the stage for his role as an angel of light to emerge. The motto of those serving Satan is “Order out of Chaos”; they create the chaos so they can bring forth their order. You hear this mantra in every disaster proclaimed by high officials saying things like “never let a good disaster go to waste.” Man's true salvation will be in the Lord Jesus Christ, not self serving politicians fornicating with their money masters who are serving Satan. The Lord Jesus rules by giving eternal life to those who trust Him and setting them free from the bondage of Satan. Satan rules by the fear of death, forcing men into bondage. God rules by love, offering eternal life and a pardon of our crimes against Him, through the giving of His only beggotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. God's Word tells us today is the day of salvation. Today, He is seeking to save those who are lost, but that time will soon come to an end at His second coming. He will come to judge this world and pour out His wrath on those who reject Him, those who chose to be His enemy by serving self and Satan, rather than their creator. Man's only escape will be to call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ while there is still time. Today is the day of salvation.

Part 3 Rom 10:9 “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, "WHOEVER BELIEVES ON HIM WILL NOT BE PUT TO SHAME." For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For "WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED." How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO PREACH THE GOSPEL OF PEACE, WHO BRING GLAD TIDINGS OF GOOD THINGS!" But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?" So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.“ Luk 23:38 “And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us." But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong." Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."” What a close call! The thief on the cross called on the name of the Lord to be saved just moments from death. He knew he was a guilty sinner deserving death and acknowledged it before the Lord Jesus. By the Spirit of God he knew his only hope was the innocent man who was unjustly condemned right next to him and about to give His life so that he could live. He did just like we learned in Romans 10. He confessed Jesus as Lord with his mouth and he had to believe in his heart that God was going to raise him from the dead. How else could he say "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."? The most beautiful part was the response of the Lord Jesus Christ "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise." This man was saved as I say, "by the skin of his teeth", he was just hours away from certain death. How fitting it was to see the salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated at the very crucifixion where He gave His life so others may live. Yet at the same time we see the foolishness of the other criminal, who rejected his only hope of salvation. He perished because he refused the love of God. You wonder what his protest was. Was it that the Creator had no right to rule the created? How insane is this, can the created demand such a thing of the Creator? Who knows what excuses this man made to reject the salvation God freely offered him. Oh, the regrets he must have had as he closed his eyes for the last time on this side of eternity only to open them on the other side to the wailing and gnashing of teeth for all eternity! He refused to bow the knee to the Lord Jesus on this side of eternity, but he most certainly did on the other side, sadly it was too late. Today is the day of salvation, mankind's only hope is the Lord Jesus Christ. Sadly, most will go through this life and hard times like this with no hope, no peace, no love and no forgiveness because like the thief that perished at the cross, they too will refuse to bow the knee to the Lord Jesus Christ. You wonder what their excuse is. My prayer is that through these difficult times many will sense the hopelessness and despair that man has to offer and turn to their true salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ. As our officials are crying out “wash your hands to be saved”, the Lord Jesus tells us that true salvation comes from having our sins washed away by faith in His precious blood that He spilled on Calvary 2,000 years ago. Php 2:5 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” 2Co 6:1 “We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: "IN AN ACCEPTABLE TIME I HAVE HEARD YOU, AND IN THE DAY OF SALVATION I HAVE HELPED YOU." Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. In Christ, Steve

Thanks Chuck. I prefer the spring loaded side without it being lockable especially dry grinding. When heat is introduced in the part it will expand in diameter and length. If it was lockable the part would still expand and may move the movable center a little, even a few tenths. When it cools down it shrinks and will have a loose contact between the centers that will cause problems with the grind. With constant spring pressure this problem is eliminated. You may have seen it in a lathe with the tail stock center. As you rough the part it expands and moves the tail stock or part and when it cools the tail stock center is no longer engaged with the part center and needs to be adjusted. Steve

Hello Steve, what a pleasant surprise finding this video on your channel! I traded a friend some (to me useless) items for one of these Harig grinding fixtures. (I think I came away from this trade smelling like a rose) I wasn't sure of the correct use of this fixture but my eyes lit up when I spotted the ID tag with the name "Harig" on it. This is a nice addition to my Harig surface grinder. Would you consider making the ball center units available? If not, where did you find the ceramic balls? Hi Alex, You are welcome. The first set of ceramic balls I bought from Boca bearing over the internet those are the ones in the videos so far. The second set was from Amazon but I forget the brand name. Hopefully we will shoot a video this weekend on the build. If you have the means to make them yourself that would be the fastest and cheapest way. We may offer them down the road but there is a lot of orders in front of them now. Steve

Is there a benefit to having the balls fixed to the part rather than the reverse center on either end and the balls contacting the part directly, or leaving the balls unfixed and allowing the spring pressure to keep them captive?

If there is any spherical run out on the balls it could cause circularity problems in the part as the high spot on the ceramic balls passes the tangent point of the centers. Steve

That will very on the diameter of the part. Small diameter I go faster and lager diameters I go slower. My guess is 25-200.

It will most likely become a product we sell. Most of the stuff I make for myself and a few others become our product just because other want one. This one may be different because the price will be higher than any other product we make so far. There will be a lot more labor, steel cost, heat treat and purchased parts for this project. To give an idea the Harig Lectra spin fixture shown in this video sell for about $3,500 alone. that is without the Sine plate option. Steve

@@SolidRockMachineShopInc Everything was ground between centers on the OD and due to certain constraints the work had to be removed to check dimensions. The trick is to have two studs on the drive plate 180° apart. A drive collar fits over the studs with spring out board of the drive plate. When the springs are under compression they hold the work against the center in the headstock. What we were grinding was the tool holder diameter in drill head spindles. No 6 jaw, the only chuck we had for the grinder that was big enough to do the job was a 4 jaw. And no collet set-up either. Just easier to do it the way we did. We also used to grind ODs mounted on arbors with the arbor stationary.

@@SolidRockMachineShopInc The one with the arbors being stationary was when we had to grind the ODs of rotary bushings. Better to grind them on their own axis of rotation. And all off our OD and ID grinding was done on very worn out Cincinnati's until we got a new Jones & Shipman. The Cincinnati's you constantly had to adjust the table to eliminate taper.
