When I apprenticed as a fitter back in the mid-90's, one of the other apprentices forgot to run the stone dry before turning the grinder off at the end of the day. No need to tell what happened the morning after. I'll just say, it was a good thing that noone was standing at the bench grinder 10 feet away... Btw, the grinder we had, had a stone about 3 times the width and a lever-operated dresser built in. :)

Hi Henrik, I seen a person running coolant on the wheel without it running as he was cleaning the chuck. This was a 12" diameter x 2" wide wheel. It blew up when he turned it on. Boy was it a mess after that. Steve

When you're using low magnetism, would it make sense to have a stop block clamped across the magnet so the part can't fly off?
@SolidRockMachineShopInc
@SolidRockMachineShopInc 5 жыл бұрын
Hi somebody else, It depends on the shape, size and material. I have seen people blocking in D2 plates that have very little magnetic holding power with CRS which has high magnetic holding power and blow up wheels. What happens is the D2 under the right conditions may heat up and thermally expand into the wheel generating even more heat. The only way it can move is up into the wheel because it is blocked in by the CRS. If you don't use the stop block the D2 slide off the magnetic chuck with very little risk of damage. You will rarely see me using stop blocks. Steve

What distance step over are you using for the finish pass? Another great grinding lesson.
@SolidRockMachineShopInc

First pass about .05 -.075 per pass, second about half that and third pass about .02. Varying the step over on the blank passes helps in flatness. Steve

I am using a grade B from MSC. It was on sale and a cheaper one. 24" x 36" black granite. It is suppose to be within .0002" flat. Over the years I have bought about 4 of these and never been disappointed. In the past we had them inspected and resurfaced once a year and every one was still in spec after a year. This one checks out very good too. The pink ones are a better wear granite but harder to resurface plus they cost more. If you cant afford it I would go with the pink. Steve

How fine are the adjustments on your grinder? The divisions are .001 on my old Norton and each line is maybe 1/4" across. So splitting to .0005 should be simple, but holy hell, does that machine have some kind of compound low for lowering the spindle?
@SolidRockMachineShopInc
@SolidRockMachineShopInc 2 жыл бұрын
I have a DRO with .00005" resolution. I don't even look at the hand wheel scale. I use the feel of the hand wheel, I am sure you won't see it move but you can feel it. It takes a little to get use to but works great.

@SolidRockMachineShopInc

I have often wondered why they go from ten-thousandths of an inch to 50 Millionths is there no measurement for one hundred thousandths of an inch?
@SolidRockMachineShopInc
@SolidRockMachineShopInc 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Barry, We are measuring increments to right side of the decimal so things can get confusing. So when a toolmaker says "one hundred thousandths of an inch" this is what is meant .100 or 100 units of and inch divided by 1000. When the toolmaker says 1 ten thousandths of an inch this is what is meant .0001" or 1 unit of an inch divided by 10,000. When the toolmaker say 50 millionths of an inch this is what is meant .00005" or 50 unit of an inch divide by 1 million. I hope this helps. Steve
@barrysummers8577
@barrysummers8577 5 жыл бұрын
I was using this reference chart from mathforum.org/library/drmath/sets/select/dm_place_value.html I believe what you're calling 50 millionths would be 5 hundred-thousandth of an inch on the chart below. Place Value Chart 0.000000001 one billionth 0.00000001 one hundred-millionth 0.0000001 one ten-millionth 0.000001 one millionth 0.00001 one hundred-thousandth 0.0001 one ten-thousandth 0.001 one thousandth 0.01 one hundredth (1 in the hundredths place) 0.1 one tenth (1 in the tenths place
@SolidRockMachineShopInc
@SolidRockMachineShopInc 5 жыл бұрын
@@barrysummers8577 You would be correct according to the chart but if you talked to a toolmaker and said "5 hundred-thousandth of an inch" he is going to think you are saying .500 or 1/2". It all boils down to the unit you use to divide an inch and giving the correct amount of that unit. I don't know of any toolmaker that would use the term "5 hundred-thousandth of an inch" to describe 50 millionths. A toolmaker would call "0.00001 one hundred-thousandth" 10 millionths so as not to be confused with .100 which he would call 100 thousandths of an inch. The chart would be less confusing if it said .00001 was one hundredth of a thousandth of an inch. It is all about terminology and using the least confusing language. Steve
