Estoy contigo, Dude! I finally get “dejar”! I never thought I’d “get” por y para, either, until I saw your video. Just discovered you about a week ago. I was close to giving up on Spanish, but now you’ve got me excited to keep learning. !Mil gracias!

My husband watched this with me and made me write, “I’m with you, Dude.” I was going to do it anyways, but I got a kick out of how much he enjoyed your video. Looking at the idea behind the word rather than the word itself makes so much more sense than the traditional way of learning. Thanks for the tidbit. We eagerly await your next video

I've been studying Spanish in one form or another, on and off, for well over 15 years. I lived and worked in Peru during eight of these years. I'm a long way from where I started but there is still so much yet to learn. I've done it all--formal classes, self-study, private tutors, on the fly with locals, in the street, on-line, etc. etc. Now I've found Jordan and I LOVE his fast paced presentations and common sense notations. In the end, it's all about communicating. I'm downright addicted to watching a couple of his videos every day. Whether you're at the beginning, middle or end of your Spanish journey, you'll find Jordan to be informative and entertaining. A great combination!

My thoughts and observations exactly. I’m with you dude. I’m just not so vocal about it. With every verb I look for the relationship between its uses. It’s always their. Often deep , but there. Thanks for speaking out.

You are so right DUDE, estoy contigo. As a beginner I find it difficult to express my thoughts into Spanish. I'm with you dude. Up until watching your videos I was trying to directly translate *everything*, and that was after four years in high school (at no point did anyone say 'actually that's not always how this works'). It wasn't until your 'words don't mean words' talks that it actually started to click, and I was able to wrap my head around how translation really works. I've found it's really accelerated my ability to both learn and read spanish.

I am totally with you Jordan! Watching your fantastic videos (and becoming a Lifetime Member), I have realized that the Spanish that I learned in high school taught me a bit (I wasn't a "good student"), but as I began to relearn Spanish for my relocation to Ecuador (where I am now), I came to understand that the linguistic/cultural nuances that have to be realized and internalized to communicate effectively are many. I am enjoying being immersed in Cuenca y aprendiendo todos los días. As you say in your videos, just go out there and say what you can. Don't be afraid of making mistakes. In time it will come.

I'm with you dude! I think there's a lot to be said about getting more comfortable "accepting the weird" linguistic changes, and just practicing getting your brain to gloss over the natural instinct/anxiety of "that doesn't sound right". I'd point to Yoda as an example: when you first meet the character of Yoda, there's and instant micro-tensing notion of "why is he speaking so funny?". Slowly though, throughout the rest of the scenes, you begin to "just accept it" and it drops to hover around the same level of how you hear and "accept" different accents of your own native language. Ciao Pues, Caballero!

Yes, I'm with you dude! In fact, I often try to do just what you are saying about associating the meaning behind the word with the word in Spanish. The reason is that I think what we are trying to do is to communicate feelings or ideas (for example) and the words that we associate them with in our primary language are only meaningful to us in the context of what they actually mean. Ok, that is confusing but I think I am saying the same thing that you are and what I feel is that if we can associate a Spanish word with a feeling (for example) then it is easier to remember and use it when we speak.

Ahh, thank you for such a great message Nigel. And I'm sure you are great with words! I feel like being articulate in your native language is separate from this. Maybe being articulate could even hurt you because you know the words so well, you feel them as you know them so well, it's hard to see them another way (all of us, not just you). I really think for this stuff, being open-minded is the key. Open-minded to different ways a word can be used compared to English. Open-minded to how words in English or Spanish can be used in different ways (and when you're focused on one way, it's hard to see another). Open-minded to different ways of saying the same thing (so you have options for translating). Yeah, I just convinced myself. This is all about being open-minded. Being good with words, or articulate, I think that's a different ball game. I think. I'm not sure =) Obviously the more words you know, the better, but ....

I'm with you... it's like they use the word "left" idiomatically more than we do. I can only imagine a Hispanic mind trying to grasp our many uses of a verb like "take," (take a break, etc.)
@elspanishdude
@elspanishdude 6 жыл бұрын
For sure (about take). Elisa's been talking about "get" lately in English. That's a crazy one. One thought I had today while driving was, in English, we could say "leave him be" or "let him be". So "leave" or "let" for the same thing (two of the "separate" uses of "dejar").

For some reason in the abyss of my brain, (so I can't explain why), I've understood "dejar" to mean "let" in the sense of giving information, but now I'm second guessing. Last night I said, "Déjanos saber cuándo la mayoria del grupo esté aquí." - Let us know when the majority of the group is here. The gentleman seemed to understand though... Also, I'm with you, dude. Complete beginner here, used to love Diary of a Wimpy Kid as a kid so thought I’d buy Diario de Greg (the Spanish version) to help me learn. On the very first page I came across this peculiar verb in the sentence “quiero dejar una cosa bien clara” which means “I want to make one thing very clear” - surprisingly it’s usage in this sentence is “to make”, which I didn’t notice in your video. I’m completely lost as to how this relates to leaving/giving in this context!
