I absolutely agree. It took me 20 years to learn that lesson. As a child I was told by teachers and parents that I was a very bright kid and things would just work out for me, because stuff like math and learning new vocab came easy to me. As if that was the only thing that mattered... Nobody bothered to teach me how to practice hard for the things that don't come easy. Eventually I've learned my lessons on my own, after failing many times, especially socially. And I'm doing fine now. Still I wonder where I would be now if I had a real mentor as a child that taught me what you just said.

In my childhood days, I learnt that you need to be smart as if that's all that matters. Thanks to that I developed a fixed mindset. Now I'm slowly learning to make a permanent switch to growth mindset. Grit is important but you can't build it in a day. I hope I have enough patience to change my life around. Thanks a lot for these videos 👍

Is true what it say on the video. when we practice anything like math assignments or other things like sports. When I start doing my last math class witch is Statistics I was very struggle with all the assignments from another college I used to attended at L.A when I move to Victor Ville and I register Stas again and I told to my family that I may don't pass the class again. But they told me that I can do it if I put a lot of afford, when start the class I was doing so well in the class and I did good on some of the homework and I pass three exams from C to A and right now I have a B in the class and I told my family and they told me that I'm really smart cause I was putting a lot of afford in the class and now all my family are very proud of me that I'm doing so good on my Statistics class.

so if we practise something everyday it will become our passion? and what about he the passions that we had?
@JD-tn5lz3 жыл бұрын
gotta ask, did something become a passion because you found early success and little effort or sacrifice was required? ...
@payaswinibansal59233 жыл бұрын
@@JD-tn5lz I commented this when I was in college. Wow. And got a reply after 4 years. To be honest what I am doing in my life right now is not my passion and did require a lot of effort and sacrifice. I am still making an effort everyday to understand and learn and come out of my comfort zone. I thi k I don't know anymore what I am passionate about. What about you? Any thoughts?

This has been proven wrong. The children who failed the marshmallow test came from poorer backgrounds and didn't do so well in later life because of their background not the inability to defer gratification. In their homes if they didn't take the marshmallow straight away they would never get it.

This is great, but the question still lingers. How do certain kids get to learn grit passion and perseverance over others? Is having grit a type of gene? Is it inherited? Or is it through the environment - good parents, environment, school? Or is it both?
@KeePhengVue2 жыл бұрын
A bit late, but I would say it’s a lot of these factor into it. You can learn about grit, but two students will have different perspective on it.
@sidpastore42393 жыл бұрын
I’m all about talking about marshmallow kids and growth mindset and grit but I was watching some videos from Adam Grant where you could apply all the grit in the world to a stupid reason with no effect. I thought anybody could learn anything if they work hard enough but is it really worth the opportunity cost?

There is also no such thing as "grit."Grit is conscientiousness, plain and simple. All Duckworth and her compatriots did was fail to notice that they had re-invented a very well documented phenomena, that already had a name. A physicists who "re-discovered" iron and named it melignite or something equivalent would be immediately revealed as ignorant or manipulative, and then taunted out of the field.

Unfortunately the scientific literature does not agree with this video. GRIT is less important than the psychological trait of "conscientiousness" which itself is also less important than IQ as a predictor of job and life success. Perseverance is important, but it wont make up for an inability to learn to read.
@sprouts4 жыл бұрын
Hi Enthusiastic Noob, thank you so much for adding insight into the topic! There are many agruments that are pro as well as those that are against (most) theories and it's great that we get to acknowledge the different approaches here.

I disagree, it's genetrics. i have had a longer term successful career 20+ years being self employed, yet applied for a 'job' at an airline and got hired. In training, while in class - got release because i wasn't 'book smart' due to my adhd. my 'false' pride wont have me re-apply in 6 months as the results in my mind will be the same as i gave it 100% and have no interest now being rejected a 2nd time. thanks though. they would rather keep young people at the airlines, then a 39 year old who will stay for the rest of their life.
@jhl36536 жыл бұрын
This used to be just simple common sense. How far our fat and lazy society has degenerated, that simple discipline is now considered a novel idea once repackaged as "grit"!

that wasn't what the marshmallow test tested
@sprouts7 жыл бұрын
what did it test?
@twilightprince81906 жыл бұрын
it tested patience. marshmellow did not test passion or, perseverance, just self control so 2 critical pieces of grit is missing
