The fact that people can be resurrected actually makes it more scary in parts. It's very clever with how the series sets up situations of imminent danger and just food for thought: if you die on water and your water-walk ends, is anyone ever going to be able to fish your body from the bottom of the lake? What do you do if your resurrection specialist mage is gone? How will the characters' and other spelunkers' perceived ability to just bounce back from death affect their carelessness in navigating the dungeon? Really, it is quite the scary reality despite surface impressions :)

Kelpies are from Scottish folklore and lure innocents to drown them, so in this case? Laios was spot on and had probably heard similar tales before.

Re: Panty Shots... Senshi has been designated the fanservice character out of revenge for all the pre-teen characters who've been used for such by other mangaka/animators. Plus he's the sexiest being alive.

A recent interview with manga creator Ryoko Kui is that this aspect of Senshi is based off of a weird neighbor she used to have.

Fun fact- those corpse retrievers were mixed race- one was half-dwarf and another half-gnome, as revealed in official Dungeon Meshi Adventurer's bible.

Nobody told Senshi the story of the Scorpion and the Frog. Though Laios' character shone through in being wary of the kelpie and - maybe unintentionally - ruining the siren's song, but yeah he had to ruin it by eating a raw parasite... Marcille's note of hair being important to magic is something to note too, she actually changes her hairstyle almost every episode All cephalopods can control the pigmentation of their skin, they can even modify the texture in order to camouflage better, for hunting or avoiding predators

Marcil changes her hairstyle 36 times across the 24 episodes, including small changes. She may be the female anime character who has changed her hairstyle the most.

I'm Japanese, but the English dub of this anime is very well done. I especially like the English voice actor of Marsil better than the Japanese voice actor. It's fun to watch the English dub on this video.

On the water floor ecosystem: in a side chapter on before the kraken appeared the main threats are fishmen so I think chilchuck asked why aren’t they dominating the floor. They ain’t sure but assume they may reproduce low despite the eggs they carry. The answer is the sirens actually eat baby fishmen when they hatch. There is a lot of rhen hatch but only quarter make it since the sirens fish for them and eat. The ones that survive are more tougher, hence also why kabru and his party was defeated. Also why the fishmen put the eggs in their hair to protect the eggs best they can.

stuff like this is why I love Dungeon Meshi

@@grizzledwizard7129 that is what i think made dungeon meshi garner so much attention. cause for many known fantasy regardles if american, european, asian or other made the common fantasy tropes involves dungeon traversing is group of ppl fight monsters to reach bottom for riches/power. questions on where monsters come from? how they live down there? benefits/issues for ppl at the surface? barely to none of that. the author ryoko kui even in an interview that got translated back in feb 2024 by twitter user gaearth ryoko tells influences of dungeon meshi creation. the earlist is watching her father play wizardly on the famicon. she said the overall gameplay is boring (to wizardly fans upset hearing this, hold on) but she loved the way monsters looked and that what made her start drawing. books being lotr of course and neverending story got her to think story ideas. then playing the pc game Legend of Grimrock got her into dungeon design. party relationships of course from baldurs gate and others like dragon age, pathfinder, pillars of eternity and more. list goes on but she is a HARDCORE fantasy nerd and other hardcore fantasy nerds love her manga for that reason.

Ah, in the manga there's a whole recipe page of Marcille making the soap by herself just like Senshi and his cooking. It's a really sweet parallel between her and Senshi, who up until this point has been very anti magic because he views it as "The easy way out". This is where Senshi begins to respect Marcille's effort and expertise. Also! Most squids and octopi, do lose their color when they die. Their cells actively change their color during normal activities and are grey/white/clear as a base. Theyve got chromataphore organs in their cells. Cooking them can change their color to their... "idle"? Color? If that makes sense. Depends on the species. A reddish octopus will turn white when it dies, then will likely cook up reddish.
@windwalker57652 ай бұрын
The Kraken turning white when it died is accurate. Squid and cuttlefish can change color due to specialized cells in the skin called chromatophores. This is used both for camouflage and communication. When the animal dies, the skin stops getting orders to be a certain color and generally fades to white or gray.

Senshi cooking the Parasite is akin to Kabayaki Unagi which is japanese for BBQ Eel, you can see the resemblance if you look up photos and compare it to the parasite meal. i recommend eating japanese bbq unagi if you come across it, if you have an asian market nearby they usually have a section of prepared jpn meals from sushi to tonkatsu curry to ramen to fried rice to the Eel dish, its very tender and the japanese bbq sauce is sweet and sticky its called Unagi No Tare (tar-rey) which means Eel Sauce. Also the giant fish near Kyoshi Island in Avatar the Last Airbender was called Unagi which means Eel, cause it was literally just a huge Eel. Realizing that the parasite dish is just Fantasy BBQ Eel is what got me to be less disgusted by the thought of cooking a parasite the size of a large intestine.

This is such a good episode for Laios and Senshi because while they both like eating monsters it comes from different places, Laios knows everything about monsters and Senshi knows everything about cooking and its Shown expertly with how each does something stupid within each others expertise

the panty shots is a running joke and kind of a subversion of the typical panty shot fanservice that would feature someone like Marcille instead if this was another anime

There's a reason Senshi named the Kelpie Anne. Also, remember that Marsil ate fishman eggs, but she didn't recognize them as fishman eggs.

Nah, the magic system has nothing to do with spell slots, it's based on how much mana you have and how much a spell consumes, so more JRPG than D&D.

That might not be what it's based on but it lines up well enough that I find it familiar, as a D&D nerd!
