Know your customers and work backwards to your actual production needs. Don't assume scale is better. Reliable income can be small scale and gives more joy and less complications.

I've grown mushrooms on and off as a hobby over the years: indoors, outdoors - logs, strictly sterilised environments... more recently straw from the duck cage - it can be a crap shoot; varieties can be picky. I've dumped failed spawn at the edge of the woods and it took, when wouldn't do anything under all the indoor complexities. It's an adventure. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for taking the time out to give very valuable advice, My wife and I run a mushroom farm here in Thailand mainly different varieties big oyster mushrooms. Number 4 advice we have managed to obtain many customers to sell too, best flush we had was 400 kilo in 36 hours, we did not get much sleep but we did manage too offload all the mushrooms we even had to go to a night market that started around 2am in the morning to sell the last lot. It's good fun and hard work but we'll worth it.

You're living the life mate! This is the stuff my dreams are made of! The experimentation is likely the most exciting part of cultivation! Wished I had the ability to do so, I certainly have the aptitude but yeah, life just won't allow for it at present... Anyway, keep up the epic work, particularly in inspiring others to get involved, it's so incredibly rewarding! PS. producing spawn is not always time consuming, with some thriving Liquid Culture and grain buffered with coffee (instant or ground) and gypsum powder, you're looking at 100% colonization at about the 2-3 week mark when kept in the ideal conditions. LC for the win. I swear by the stuff! Spores just take too long but are if course a great option for long-term storage. Another tip I picked up for super fast colonization / propagation is to let either core cuttings, spores or LC mycelium grow out on agar and then squirt distilled water into the dish, give it a good shake, suck it all up and squirt that solution into your LC. You'll have so much mycelium you wont know how to use it all =D

Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Just putting a summary for time pinched people. But I recommend watching the whole thing for full context. 1) You can grow in non-sterilized medium/substrate, done waste time on sterilization. Learn about pre-sterilized substrate like coffee grounds 2) Its easier to buy spawn/spores from a supplier rather than growing yourself 3) Growling Mushrooms at scale is really labor intensive, not like hobby growing. So start at lower scale 20kg/week and see if you can scale up 4) Selling food can be more difficult than growing it. Difficult to get a market so get buyers lined up before growing. 5) Its difficult to grow mushrooms as a full time business. Need to augment with other businesses like mushroom kits, courses etc

May I just say that I am in total sync with you. Ok, I'm now 68 and you look a lot younger and have the opportunity (time wise) to achieve your goals. I was very impressed by your video, not just because you seem to have sorted your business out to a large degree), but because you have shared it with others, giving them a chance to judge for themselves whether to get involved in a venture such as this, whereas otherwise they would not have felt it possible to advance to the beginning. From personal experience, I spent most of my childhood on a farm, both horticultural and agricultural, and since about 40 years ago have been trying to get back into that lifestyle. As the years have passed, I have found that sheep run faster than me, as does my wife, digging has become more strenuous, and the prospect of farming has become more remote. I now live on a busy main road which is a great opportunity for me to sell produce on the roadside. I would really like some more detailed advice as to how to produce mushrooms from scratch. If this is not available from you, then I can fully understand, and I wish you well with your endeavours. Warmest regards

As a designer of mushroom cultivation environmental conditions I agree with your comments about marketing. However, if you succeed in establishing the market the hobby turns into an all absorbing 24/7 beast where you are not allowed to make one error in the six week growth cycle (white mushrooms). To be able to supply mushrooms on a regular basis you need crops in all stages of production otherwise one week there just are no mushrooms to supply your customers. You are also correct in buying spawn - to create and maintain sterile conditions is very, very difficult not only from the environmental aspects, but due to people management. The main reason for sterilization of substrate is to ensure a consistent end product. It can be achieved by fermentation, autoclave or rinsing in hydrogen peroxide. Any sterilization process adds to the production cycle and therefore to the costs. You are also correct about labour. The minding of the growing rooms temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and air velocity during the various stages of the cycle is labour intensive. The picking and packing is also labour intensive. The often overseen problem of lots of labour in a growing room is that the room needs extra cleaning due to the intense occupation. Commercial mushroom growing is an established venture. However, the smallest commercial farm I have seen growing white mushrooms have a capacity of 600 kg/week. Smaller is OK for speciality mushrooms like shittake, oysters and others. The market shrinks for specialities, but unfortunately the production cycle is still there as explained above.

I started it straight away, then the really cold weather came along (I'm in the U.K.).My mushrooms froze solid but I kept on with it and as soon as the frost and snow went, they started growing and we soon had a crop. We got three crops all together and the mushrooms (oyster) were delicious. Now the pack is in the garden, under a tree and I'm hoping something will happen there. Maybe they will like it there and talk to the trees. I need to check that out with your other videos, perhaps? Mushrooms can be very profitable depending on where you live. I started up in Vietnam and Bali. Growing Oysyers and snails on small 1 acre lots. I found the best places were to upscale or medium upscale buffets. Especially to like these big fancy hotel buffets. They would pretty much buy everything. Plus labor is cheaper so I just watches the operation. Gave me more time to shake hands and take samples to smaller places with a chef I had hired to do demonstrations on the product.

I wondered about the sterilization aspect because when mushrooms grow in nature there is no sterilization. Thanks :-)
@GroCycleTV5 жыл бұрын
yes, good question, this is something people often wonder about...in nature, there are also billions upon billions of mushrooms spores, only a few of which land in favourable conditions and outcompete other organisms and go on to grow to maturity. So when people first tried to master the cultivation of mushrooms they worked out you can make it much more reliable by sterilising the substrate to remove all competing organisms. It works well, but we found over time you can also make it work reliably in non-sterile or semi-sterile conditions as well. Check out our video on the history of mushroom cultivation if it's of interest: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naWQkICjmbB0jKM

@GooseDave4 жыл бұрын
@@GroCycleTV thanks - I would be worrying about other spores from dangerous, but similar looking mushrooms colonizing or is it the case that using spawn stage media in the substrate means that the head start it has, eliminates all possibility of spores of another type taking hold? More of a problem when creating your own spawn, I guess.

I love how he stumbled upon wild oyster mushrooms! It made me so happy. I hope I am good enough at identifying and find some on my own in the future.

Great video. I’m just starting to look into growing my own mushrooms. I’m from the start of research on it I kept wondering, why does everything have to be sterilized? Mushrooms grow in the wild and it’s not sterilized. Makes perfect sense that it doesn’t have to be 100% sterile.
@h3lblad34 жыл бұрын
Because you don't want mold growing on and around your mushrooms or bugs in the soil from hatching and eating them. They may survive fine, but you don't know what else is in it.
@jorgemagana54974 жыл бұрын
They may grow on the wild just fine with the sole purpose of surviving and reproducing but we sterilize the substrate so that the mushroom we intend to grow does not have any competition brought by other contaminant microorganisms. Simply put, the less contamination you have, the more fruiting bodies (edible part of mushrooms) you get because the mycelium is focusing all its energy in reproducing and not in fighting off competitors.
