Great Video. I live about 20 minutes away from the Grohmann knife factory. Typically if you buy a factory second, it doesn't come with the presentation box. Also they usually pair up the factory second knife with a 2nd sheath. the defects with the knife or sheath to class them as a second are usually very insignificant which show their high standard that the company adhere's to. I've been using Grohmann knives for about 40 years with no complaints and living so close to the factory i have to admit that i have quite a collection. My Wife always asks me ,"how many knives does one man need ? My response is, "just one more".

Thanks for filling in that gap about factory seconds. When researching the #2 I saw a video where the owner had a factory 2nd and also said he could not find the flaw, so I gambled and won on his experience! Needless to say, I am a fan of the Grohmann knives and have become a sort-of itinerant Grohmann knife preacher along the way.

I also ordered a factory second #2 flat grind with wine xtra resin wood handle and couldn’t find a flaw in the knife or the sheath. I own several grohmann’s including 3 of their kitchen knives.

These knives are simply awesome. A joy to hold and use. I have a #2 in buffalo horn, and a #3 flat grind in "Xtra". They quickly became my favorite all-purpose knives. Thanks for showcasing yours.

Love my #1. Did replace the sheath with the flap over style one. Protects it a bit more and ensures i never lose it. Dont mind the extra step to get it out, cause ive never needed to get a hunting knife out in a hurry. Got one of the really old ones from my grandpa, and ill never get rid of it.

The No1 that is by far my favorite hunting knife. There is no uncomfortable way to grip that handle, the blade is the best combination of clip and drop point qualities, and stainless steel will quarter a moose without any touchups. Only a few swipes with the steel afterwards will have it shaving again. I also think their "Large Skinner" is a great design, but I wish the blade was about an inch shorter. Adding a drop point to a classic upswept skinner blade, genius.

I agree the No 1 is my favorite hunting knife as well.

@@FreeAmericaChannel After I did a few animals with mine, everything else just started to feel crude and awkward. Love how the No1 will split the leg hide like a zipper, the curved spine keeping the tip out of the meat. With a lot of other knives, the tip either wants to pop out or cut into the meat.

They make a all these knives as a kit to assemble at home. I have 1 and a 4. The 4 I have had for 15 years great camp knife not much for fishing or hunting but setting up fires and some heavy cutting it has done great no signs of failure other than a sliced sheath (as you spoke about) My number 1 I just put together much finer knife but still very happy with it.

I admit to being tempted to get a kit or two, I just don't really need new projects in my life at the moment and if I somehow messed up the knife I would be hard on myself, LOL!
@Cmgolfers
@Cmgolfers 9 ай бұрын
@@FreeAmericaChannel They are very simple kits great for a kid to put together with a bit of help my one piece of advice is to get a anvil or other very solid surface when hammering together the rivets. We even used a concrete floor. If you don't use a solid surface the rivets are easy to bend and miss set.

Great review, great knives. I have the same four Grohmann knives except my flat grind knife is a different number than yours and I can't remember which one. What interested me Is how the wooden handles have stood up to time and they didn't crack. Many years ago I bought the cold steel Canadian knife. I started using it in my kitchen and up until this day it is my favorite knife even though I have the original ones. That cold steel knife is actually what got me to buy the original ones. But like I said for some real strange reason I still use the plastic handle one everyday. Probably the reason why is because it's no maintenance except for a honing Steel , I don't have to worry about leaving it soaking in the water. Along with a couple of nice Buck knives and you have a really good set of food processing gear. My very first knives that I carried with me back in the 1980s when I traveled through the USA down to Mexico was a buck 124 and a Swiss Army Champ. Grohmann also sells a 6-in honing steel made in Germany.

I have had good experiences with the wooden handles. Like you, I put my Cold Steel on the magnet with my other kitchen knives. The Grohmann filet knife I have has seen the most steady use and the wood is still excellent.

They sell lots of "seconds" with such minor flaws, but great prices. I have a #2 trout and bird knife (or also the #1 for smaller hands) that is a second, and I can’t find any real problem with it. Slight uneven sanding in the handle is all I see. They seem to be more in the flat grind, which is a more of a special order product and may explain why. But seconds only come out when they have enough to sell, so if anyone reads this, don’t expect to get what you want. You get what’s available.
@FreeAmericaChannel
@FreeAmericaChannel Жыл бұрын
That is exactly what I have found as well. You have to keep you eyes open for seconds. They tend to be worth more as a working edge than you pay for them.
@jimf1964
@jimf1964 Жыл бұрын
@@FreeAmericaChannel Actually it seems that most of the seconds (at least in the six months or so that I’ve been looking) are mostly the full flat grind. Those are special orders, and not from the main production, so that would explain the the flaws. So far I haven’t found any regular sabre grind ones as seconds…..but as I said, I’ve only been looking for a while.
@MrFreeGman
@MrFreeGman Жыл бұрын
I have the #4 saber grind and I've found the bevel to be at such a high angle (40 degrees or so) that it doesn't do very well with slicing. I can't seem to get it to a razor sharp edge with hand sharpening on a Japanese stone, unlike all the other knives I own. I love the way the knife looks, feels and where it's made (I'm Canadian myself), but it kinda sucks spending that much money on a knife only to have to switch to your mora when it's time to clean and filet a fish. I've been considering getting a flat grind #2 to fill that gap.
@FreeAmericaChannel

My flat grind #2 is a perfect little small game and fish knife, plus it can process any vegetables you may wish to cut up in camp. And it get hair popping sharp with just a little maintenance. Maybe if you are lucky they'll have a 2nd in stock and you can save some CAN$.
@MrFreeGman

@@FreeAmericaChannel Thanks for the response, I suspected as much with the flat grind. I've been eyeing a #2 second on their website for a week now and I just pulled the trigger. I don't think I'll be able to find a better small game/fish knife for $60.
@danaking1946
@danaking1946 Жыл бұрын
You won't be disappointed with the #2 flat grind. It's a perfect little knife for processing small game or fish and also for using around camp. I have several Grohman knives and they all have their uses. All factory seconds. The reasons for the seconds is because of the slightest flaw, most often in the handle material, that makes it not meet their high standard for sale as a first. Knives that'll last a lifetime.
@MrFreeGman
@MrFreeGman Жыл бұрын
@@danaking1946 I've been using it for s month now and a dozen cleaned fish later I can say that it definitely fills all the gaps left by the #4. I can't even find the supposed flaw in the knife, no idea why it was sold for half off.
