The reason youre probably experiencing the "lag" at lower end is one because that cam you put in one is made for mid to top end pull which is why that ecm is raised to 10k rpm's (so you can benefit from 6-10k in the rev range) which is basically replacing the low end power for top end in a similar way that gearing does (and some bottom end could be gained back with a gearing change) and two because that decomp was giving rotating mass and a heavier rotating mass helps with bottom end (and could be gained back through the use of a heavier flywheel or clutch basket). As someone who has always wanted a grom but cant because i live in a small town that id have to ride highways (atleast 30 minutes) to get anywhere so i thought that a grom was just a dream and id keep riding big bikes, but this has changed my mind. I also didnt want to bore or stroke a grom because i dont have a case puller to pull a bottom end and i didnt want to lose reliability with a big bore. This seems like a viable option that doesnt kill the bank
@CTGromer4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you completely. It makes sense that I'm really feeling the bog, because I removed my oil spinner as well, which contributes a significant amount of rotating mass. It really does pull on the top end now though. Just depends on how you want to set your grom up. I appreciate your informative response!

You stated the reason why I don't get a cam. I'm not willing to give up low rpm torque in exchange for high rpm horsepower. For performance guys who want to race around all the time it's the perfect solution. But not so practical for regular daily transportation guys who always ride between 3,500 and 6,000 rpm. For most riders it's a great product and the price is right. : )
@CTGromer5 жыл бұрын
That's true you do lose some. But when I'm riding the grom in town I find myself at pegged throttle a lot of the time, so it definitely helps get you up to speed when you need it!
@supermotogreg5 жыл бұрын
@@CTGromer My riding style is completely different. I rarely peg the throttle and the engine is almost always between 3,500 and 6,000 rpm. With such a small bike and a tiny engine, weight becomes a major performance factor. I weigh 138 and my Grom is lightened down to 214 pounds. I just ordered a lightweight all aluminum rear swing arm to make it even lighter. Cams are just fine if you need to spool up the engine. That's what they're designed to do.

Comparing the power commander to a package that includes a cam is kind of unfair. A power commander is only as good as the tune that gets put on it. It's really designed to allow for unlimited tuning (like on a dyno) and is very often underutilized. Not saying the flash and cam isn't sweet it's just comparing apples to oranges.
@CTGromer5 жыл бұрын
While I agree with you in terms of performance they're not comparable and that the PCV is typically under utilized and people are just using the maps provided on the PCV websites and not using a wideband sensor or dyno, I disagree on their total comparability. I'm comparing what you get for dollar spent and the PCV just by itself is $350, then you have to buy the wideband sensor, or at least dyno it (more money). With the DHM CAM and Reflash package ($150) you get sooo much more performance for your money spent. That's my point. Thanks for commenting brother, cheers!

@@robertmrozek3067 The problem is I'd have to pay more to get the PCV tuned for the TB CAM, and I didn't want to do that. Again, my comparison is on price of the two packages vs power gained.

No, not significantly. Especially if you're giving it a good rev and popping the clutch, thanks for commenting!
@jkreviea5 жыл бұрын
You guys are missing the point of the PCV. It affords you the ability to make changes to the bike, and only pay for the ecu once. If you are content with just the stuff you've done, then by all means, reflash your ecu. But it's like a drug, once you start, you're hooked. The power commander (at least on my last two liter bikes) also had expandability for a/f and other stuff.
@CTGromer5 жыл бұрын
You're right, and I try to make that point clear in some of my other videos. If you are going to CONTINUE to mod your bike, BBK, etc. then the PCV has the expand-ability and the customization potential to make it the better choice. For most people on here that are just doing bolt ons and staying stock bore, the ECU flash is the cheapest and safest option. Thanks for the comment!
Could you potentially compensate for the loss in low-end performance with a different sized sprocket? Love the video!

You definitely can, and in later videos you'll see that I installed a 14T sprocket and it helped significantly!

@CTGromer4 жыл бұрын
it might help some, but its not worth the money. Its cheaper to also add the full intake and just reflash the ECU. But it also depends, are you going to continue to mod all the way up to BBK? If so, the PCV is better because you can constantly retune it yourself with wideband.

Hey thanks for commenting! as far as I know, K&N only makes a replacement filter for the stock airbox on the grom, not an intake system like the Chimera. I think for the money Chimera is a great system, but DHM has a really good one too for even cheaper. ANYTHING is better than the stock airbox, its super restrictive.

Hmm... how many miles, and how much do you weigh if you don't mind me asking? ALSO - the Yoshimuras make ALOT more power than the cheap aftermarket systems; a lot of R&D went into producing them, which is why they cost so much.

When he fits the new cam the cam tap it's super lose. Meaning there is a bigger gap between the tap it and cam lub. Now I would say the valves are not opening and closing for so long now. That's an interesting way to look at it, thought I'm not sure if its right or not. I think its more about optimized timing when the engine is spinning really fast. Did the cam and ecu limit wheelie potential? You were talking about how the grom revved higher but how was the bottom end affected?
@CTGromer4 жыл бұрын
This is a very good question. Did the CAM and ECU affect wheelie potential? It's hard to tell, but I'm gonna say, yes, slightly. If you're clutching up, I'd say not as much but if you're throttling and bouncing, yes I'd say you lose a little. One thing is for sure- the bike hesitates a little more down in the low RPM range, and the grom needs that "grunt" down low, and pretty much everything its got to get the front end up. ESPECIALLY on sit-downs. Stand-ups are much easier. What really affects the wheelies in a negative way in my opinion is removing the oil spinner. Removing that rotating mass in the engine is also removing the engines inertia, or its ability to keep some momentum through resistance. It revs faster, but you dont seem to get as much "pop" when you drop the clutch and yank. Great question, It's not talked about alot. Thanks for commenting!

@CTGromer4 жыл бұрын
The only fix for the low end lag would be a CAM designed for low-end. I've sacrificed the low end for more topend. I believe since its still the ECU that is tuned, it still compensates for elevation and climate, that would be a good question for DHMotoring - he did my tune.

@CTGromer5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! I'd recommend just the basic ECU reflash from DH Motoring if you need balanced and linear power. The reflash is only $105 vs the PCV which is $350. The PCV is great if you're going to do a big bore kit and other extreme engine mods. For stock bore and just adding a free flowing exhaust and air intake, the Re-flash is the cheapest and best option!

Hi Brenda, that's an outstanding exhaust on the grom. If you have stock intake, I wouldn't worry about it. Hi from Belgium ! Love your vids. I just purchased a Grom 2017 (MSX 125 in Europe). I wonder one thing. Here, we got some differences about gas. We have the choice between 95 and 98 octane (and sometimes 10% ethanol in it). Do you think the new ecu will accept that ?
@CTGromer4 жыл бұрын
its all about compression ratio in the engine. Grom compression is pretty low in stock form, so it can safely run USA 87 octane fuel with up to 10% ethanol. 95 octane is more than enough. Just remember with ethanol in the fuel don't let fuel sit in the bike for too long. It goes bad quicky.
