This is one of my favorite video's you have done Scott.. There are tons of "band details" alot of people do not realize happen, or, they overlook them. But aside from the "fun" aspect of playing music, there is a business side that many (newbies or rookies) do not understand. Setting up and tearing down is the suck factor of live gigging. The older I get the harder this aspect becomes. The relationship/family aspect of a music group is as dynamic and difficult as a personal relationship and only is appreciated after you have experienced it. In my experience (you and I were both born in 1964), it seems like bass players are the most likely to screw stuff up for the group in every shape, form or fashion!! there must be something inherently wired within bass players to be create bad behavior!!!!! great work my friend..

Marcus my friend, welcome from out of the shadows! Many thanks! I hear you....I've done the hired gun thing for the past few years and you certainly reflect on those gigs on the way back home. Pretty easy to see all the cracks (or hopefully, how well it's actually going) from that short period of time with them. Cheers!

Just a note on the band contact/cell phone for doing business. I've set up a band Google Voice account for my band with great success. They work great, will forward calls, notify by e-mail when you have messages (they will even transcribe the message for you in the e-mail if you want). So if no one wants to dedicate a cell phone for this purpose, it's a great option. I like it better than the extra cell phone myself. And it's 100% free! Great video, Scott. Cheers to Doctor Groovy! I'm 17, and I've had the immense pleasure and luck to have played at places like Red Rocks and Lollapalooza. Despite this, the path to making it is never clear and I feel like one big mistake or lost opportunity has the possibility of really messing up the progression of my career. Any clarity on the massive clusterfuck of an industry that is music that I'm heading toward is appreciated so much. This video was helpful while seeming just incredibly sincere. So rock on Scott \m/

Many thanks my friend. I've had the best times in my life playing music under the worst conditions. lol What I thought were just horrible things, one after another and knowing I wouldn't be home for a few years.....it was just one knock after another. Getting to be "raised" that way was a beautiful thing. Things would've been a LOT smoother had I knew this going into it, but I honestly can't say that going through the school of hard knocks with my buddies was horrible....it was just turning us all into tougher people who would REALLY APPRECIATE the finer things in life later on. I always said that I would pass on my little stories when I got old, now I'm doing it. If ANYONE gets anything from all this that makes them take an easier road, fight less, be a real pro in impossible situations etc., then that is a beautiful thing. I'm truly glad that you bothered to watch the video before they put me in a nursing home. lol Keep in touch! Scott

***** He's played at Red Rocks because he was in School of Rock. It's a band camp for kids and his mom appears to have helped organize it. Also, there are a lot of shitty bands playing at Red Rocks these days. It's not something prestigious. It just means you have a connection to an organization or whatever.
@WalkerMasuda10 жыл бұрын
While I get what you're saying and yes the opportunity was offered through an organisation like I previously stated, you're underplaying it. I auditioned for School of Rock's national touring band and made it in after competing against thousands of guitarists nationwide. There are 3 guitar players per group and there are 6 groups of the national band. Most of us have gear endorsements, and we're playing lolla this summer. So you're either slightly jealous or slightly misinformed. Either way, I'm feeling good about my achievements so far. I sent that guy vids and he never answered back.

Hello Scott, I've been playing for 23 years done a lot over the years from bedroom to huge festivals. I really enjoy your videos and have been a subscriber for a long time. the last two about bettering the band and gigs have been invaluable. I have to agree as I've seen and dealt with almost all of these. You are spot on and people need to take a page from your book. I didn't make an agreement and bought eq fought, lost shit it was a bad experience and these were ppl I've known 15 years or more. My question is this I'm currently in a coverband that plays metal and hard rock stuff, but recently we got 2 newer member that are younger and have been adding stuff we like to please everyone but at shows seem to get the comment amazing stuff, I don't know any of those songs but you guys are awesome. Now to be fair we have a lot of stuff but when we play with other bands tend to bring our best and stuff we like to showcase our band. We always have a few songs ppl know and a few some may know... When we play a headliner we play everything from system of a down, stp, acdc, three doors down, to Atreyu, five finger but we tend to play less known stuff with most known to offset.. My issue and question is this how do I balance the mix and how do I get the younger guys to play more well known and enjoy it so they feel they have a say in the band as it's not working fan wise we hit a stalemate.. Even though people live us and compliment us we want more fans and gigs to open up. What do you think about playing well known and stuff by bands that may be less of a big hit by the same band, and enjoying playing stuff we like. Is there a successful happy medium or best way to optimize fans. We are professional we do play more known than unknown but we need ideas on how to next level to keep the bar and crowd booming and returning to see us. Thanks I appreciate any helpful, constructive comments as I realize we play different music but I want to better the band and make sure all 4 of us are happy and feel part of it so we all move to higher levels, thanks in advance...mark

Great stuff as always, Scott! Here's a question. I hope I'm not speaking just for myself, but I'm one of those guys who's dabbled at learning songs and improving slowly but surely on guitar whenever I get time off from my day job (and night job, and afternoon/evening jobs, lol). I've seen a lot of players and youtube videos that are way beyond my current skill, but an awful lot that are equal and/or far worse than my current skill but who think of themselves as awesome. This is where being a perfectionist can be a real problem. While many others have no problem sucking and having a great time, I always wait for tomorrow. But like you say, time goes by really REALLY fast once you've reached a certain age (I can't remember my 30s at all cuz I didn't do anything but work and sleep during them). The point is, I'd love to play little gigs at backyard parties, family restaurants, coffee shops, bowling alleys, etc. like some of my pals and relatives do. My strong point has always been watching audiences and knowing what they dig and what they don't dig. I've been learning certain songs specifically for those reasons. My WEAK point is, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, I feel like the biggest DUMB ASS on the planet as far as gear and set up goes. I think there are an awful lot of us who have guitars and amps and all our time is spent learning how to play, but we don't understand how to transform that to performing on a stage where you need a lot more equipment and gear than just your guitar and amp. I basically understand now that amps on stage are mic'd and that the amp sound goes into a PA mixer and the PA is what the crowd hears not the individual amps. Does that mean that owning a PA is pretty much a must if you plan on gigging and that one better invest in one and make room in their house to keep it handy? Also, I've seen bands with laptops and ipads on stage and was wondering if you could explain in detail how one would use a laptop instead of an amp at a gig. It seems that would be so much easier, lighter and take up so much less space than lugging amps around town. I know you put up a video for beginners a while back that showed the basics of how to turn the dials on your amp to get different tones. If there was any way you could do a video like that for the beginner band on super basic but effective and efficient set up for a backyard or small club band, that would be great. Things like wireless stuff, PAs, monitors, amps vs laptops, and low cost recommendations and how to use them for the TOTAL BEGINNER that would be a video that I could sure use. I've watched a few of your set up and gear videos but I'm such a guitard that I feel like I'm a kid in school who's a couple grades behind and am kinda guessing what you mean cuz I've never dealt with any of those things hands on other than an amp and a guitar. I know a lot of guitar people seem to love the gear side and know all about it like some people know sports stats, but my knowledge about that stuff is super weak. I've had my hands full just playing and learning songs. But... you need to know that kind of set up/gear/equipment thing if you want to play in a real band in front of a real crowd, so a video on how to go from a guy who can play a guitar through an amp in his house good enough to take it to the next level which is performing on stage without just cranking that one amp he's used to up to 11 would be super helpful. Right now I'm seeing a lot of videos online that leap too far from one area to the other for the beginner to grasp. It's either videos learning how to play songs or licks and scales OR seemingly rocket science hi-tech stuff that's way over the beginner's head as far as on stage equipment (and all the language that goes with that) goes. If you could do a video where you could put yourself into the shoes of somebody who's only guitar experience has been playing through an amp at home and who has hardly if any knowledge about anything beyond that (basically a total equipment dumb ass), but who wants to take what he's learned on stage with a band sometime soon, I think that kind of video would be very helpful to a lot of people. Just a thought.

My standard electric works great with the kc550, but my strat wont, way too much bottom. Was thinking of getting a kc110 to stereo link hoping that will work. Please, what do you think. Oh and I will be downloading backing tracks replacing guitar, bass and vocals. Im almost 69 years old, always wanted to try this and now im able to do it financially. Hi Scott! I am intermediate guitar player. I can easily learn songs via lessons and tabs and play them rather good. I can also do some improvising. But I have difficulties putting my ideas out of my head and on to the fretboard. It is more like this: I go to the toilet to take a sh*t and when I'm sitting there I get so many ideas for killer blues solos and licks in my head, but when I pick a guitar later up, I forget half of them, and the other half just doesn't exist on the fretboard :) How should I train myself to get better with realising my ideas? If you will ever get some extra time I recommend. Rock on!

Hey man, i've been watching your vids for awhile. Awesome video by the way! I'm 18 and i'm about to get my GED and I have always wanted to start a metal band ever since I was a kid. It has basically been my ambition my whole life. And I have been contemplating about going to college for music business. Do you think going to college would be worth the money? Should I start a band and try to make it now? Should I even bother going to college? Would it be worth the money spent? Just curious what your thoughts are, you obviously know your stuff and I would really appreciate your opinion. Once again, awesome video! I loved it!

Hey Scott! I'm curious what you have to say as far as originality in a band. Obviously everyone has heard that originality is a big thing, but I'd like to hear a deeper analysis. Things like, "How much uniqueness do you think is too much that it doesn't work for the audience?" Also, what do you think it takes for an audience to look past the outfits the band is wearing, and see them as artists, or at least actually listen to the music? This is a pretty broad topic, so I don't expect the answer that will solve all problems, but some input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Zac

Scott, I didn't know, nor would I have guessed, that you don't like Page or Led Zep. Speaking of Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong did an album w/ Norah Jones called "Foreverly". I'm sure you may have heard of it. It's a tribute to The Everly Brothers and it's actually very good. I'd be curious to get your thoughts. Their reinterpretation of "Long Time Gone" and "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" are really a joy to listen to and they have great harmony. If I didn't know, I would never have guessed Billie Joe's vocals. A huge departure from his Green Day singing ;).

I think the only people who would confront you about saying off-color things are the kinda people who are laughing their asses off about it right there with ya. Cool Vid, Scott. watched it beginning to end.

Ha! I was getting ready to do a video about the same because there's not a lot of this on YT. Think I'll just send people over here. OMG Scott, Taxes! I have a douche bag ex band mate, bitching at me right now for filing taxes on a gig like 15 years ago. Lol! He's into it for over 15k right now. I don't know about the others, if the IRS hasn't got them, it's coming.

There are bands who play music and there are bands that know how to put on a show, Phil X knows how to put on a show. If you are a gutair player learn 3 things to do, sing, sing and sing. If you are going to be a good entertainer you must sing and play guitar. Not too many guitar players alone are good entertainers the masses could give a shit about good guitar players. Its about putting on a good show and entertaining people not shredding the fretboard. I saw people leave a Tedeschi Trucks show when Derek Trucks bored the shit out of them with a 45 minute jam, Derek Trucks is one of the best guitarist of all time dosen't sing.

I was actually at a show the other day and thought the exact opposite. The band was really good, but as soon as they started singing I was not into it. I feel like a lot of bands form and they just designate someone as the singer/songwriter because that's what bands are "supposed to do". If a band has that person who is a talented lyricist and singer, then go ahead... but I don't think bands should force it just because.

Instrumental bands and jam bands don't bring in the money or the the crowds, there are only a handful that every made it, as much as I like that kind of music, I am in the minority. Average everyday people want to dance and drink. One of the reasons I don't play in a band anymore, I would rather stay in the garage and noodle with other musicians.

No, I do not let people post whatever they want. It's MY CHANNEL. I police each and every comment. It's just like you don't let ANYONE sleep on your couch just because their curtains are made out of the same material back at their trailer. So, you gonna be groovy or ya gonna be gone?

Band member girlfriends are the worst. Wives are a close second. And hopefully the two never meet... Really like the gear reviews, but this video might be the best so far. Hopefully it will sink into a few ears.
