Groucho is astonishing. You watch a couple dozen of these, and no one has better ad libs. What a mind, and what extraordinary experience he's had. I have his first book..a little one called Bedrooms.

A good deal of Groucho’s ad libs are scripted by writers.

Beverly Putnam's first safari which she mentioned was actually kind of famous at the time (it took place January that year). It made a few newspapers, both before and during. It was a 30-day trip, 15 of which were the actual safari and hunting in Kenya's Rift Valley. 13 women attended, along with some professional hunters, photographers and guides.

I'm so glad that you've worked hard to upload as many of these shows as are available to you. My compliments for your dedication. I wish there were more. BTW, what happened to the 1952 episodes? Being born in 1947, these were fun when I was a little girl, and now seeing them is even more fun. Since I'm a born researcher I love to look up as many of the people as I can to see what became of them. As an afterthought, I saw that the De Soto was phased out in 1961, the same year that the show was phased out. Again, many thanks and blessings for airing as many of these as you can. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the comment-- and I'm so glad you've been enjoying the shows! And good news-- I'm expecting to be getting a few more episodes soon, so I should have some new posts coming up this summer. The reason there are so few shows in circulation from before 1954 is complicated, but the short answer is that they never included the pre-1954 shows in reruns, and almost all that survives today from YBYL are the films they used for reruns. There are a bunch of pre-1954 shows included in two DVD sets published by Shout! Factory (over ten years ago). Those came directly from prints held at the Library of Congress. I can't post those for copyright reasons, unfortunately (the rerun episodes I've posted are all in the public domain), but you can still find copies of those sets for sale online pretty easily.

The lieutenant died at age 90 in Sept 2020 after a distinguished career as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was, however, involved in a serious mistake as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam where he dropped two bombs 650 short of the target and killed 20 US soldiers - wounding several dozen others. The error was attributed to his inexperience - having only flown 90 hours in that helicopter.

Interesting to note that most of the now public hospitals in New Zealand were built by the Americans including our international airport in Auckland. The Americans during World War 2 built airfields, bases and hospitals all through New Zealand to treat their wounded soldiers who were fighting in the Pacific. ANZUS, Lest we forget. Now the only thing us kiwi New Zealanders would like as a wee bit more trade access into the US dairy market:)

"This is Government work and it's strictly confidential". "Seven women work on this job and they keep it a secret!? Well, how to you even get one woman to keep it a secret!? Do you sow zippers on them?" "Oh, they don't know what they are doing." "Well it certainly sounds like a government job alright!"
