Blackie, I just purchased an alcohol stove and have a question: do they work just as well when the outdoors temperature drops down into the teens?
@by_Wayne3 ай бұрын
@@bretjohnson6188 I have used mine down to -20 C (about 0 F) and they still work well. Much colder and they don't produce enough BTUs to compensate and takes considerably longer to boil water. Using a windscreen around the burner helps a lot.

Old pill bottles are great for camp pantry items, just check the seal if it’s required. Vacuum Sealer bags are made for boil in bag, can also make up your meal ahead of time & bring it on your camp out.

very true and i will be doing a boiling bag left overs to demo that in a coming video

I vacuum seal and freeze my food so the food is also the cooling media. Same with any water I bring, it doubles as a cooling media. I can pack more food in less space sans loose ice or ice packs.
@alf35533 ай бұрын
For one fishing trip I BBQed some chicken thighs just before my trip, stuck 3 in a vacuum bag with a bit of my favourite BBQ sauce then in the freezer then vacuum seal it. On the trip just drop in some boiling water & it was like fresh off the BBQ 🤤. Tip don’t put to much in the bag, the middle piece of chicken takes a lot longer to heat up so try to keep the food flat when freezing.

Once again I have learnt something. Thank you for that Blackie. Never have I thought of steaming using a canteen cup. I was shown in the Australian army reserve back in the eighties how to utilise immersion cooking in a canteen cup. We were taught to heat the food, and then to use a little of the water to clean the can (which became soup) while the rest is for coffee or tea.

Thanks, Blackie. I really enjoy this series! I don't know why it surprised me (coming from you and all) but boiling a Hormel Compleats meal in the canteen cup worked like a charm. It didn't melt the plastic, it didn't build up pressure and "blow out" the contents and turning it over halfway through -- brilliant even if it's just eating at home if/when the power goes out.

Greetings Blackie, That's a neat trick with the potatoes chips. I would be adding this to my next hicking trip, but I would adding the full omelet recipe. I think I would try making some type of muffin or this way. Blackie I have been cooking in a canteen cup and stainless steel cups for last 15 years. As you know Puerto Rico is the path of hurricanes. I developed a cooking skill that I would make my grandmother proud. I have a small stainless steel bowl that has the correct amount per person. That way no food would go waste. My 1st military cook set was a Swiss volcano ranger stove. This gave me a new way to make meals and hot coffee with out wasting any... PS Keep making more cooking video

I carry Idahoan brand dehydrated pre shredded hash browns out in the field. A zip bag full is enough for a couple good meals, along with an egg or two. They take up little space and all you have to do is soak them in water for about ten minutes. I then either fry them up or add them straight into my eggs and cook together. Would probably work great in the chip bag omelette

Great video. You answered a question that I've wondered about for a bit. If things can be cooked in a potato crisp bag, they obviously be cooked in a tin. The question that had me puzzled was the caution of the plastic lining in a tin, but your mention of the fact that when using boiling water, the temperature never gets high enough to melt any plactic liner, thereby preventing any danger of the plastic liner melting and contaminating the food. Cheers.

I steam cake mix. Works well. Add water to cake mix as per instructions. Place in some sort of bowl thats held away from the canteen cup to prevent burning. Add a few tablespoons of water to the canteen cup and boil. Top up every few minutes with water. About twenty minutes check that the cake is cooked if a skewer or similar pulls out clean. So easy to to do.

another way too make a grate / screen for steaming is the weber grill screens out of aluminum plate that scissors can cut. check out your grilling section. when i have used zippy bags to heat food, have 1 rule- double bag the items to heat up. upgrade the chip / egg recipe with some jimmy dean's sausage crumbs. you got me thinking of micky D's big breakfast. oh what size chip bag the small snack one or the next one up at 2 5/8 oz. ? okay i got my answer- you using the smaller snack bag. the larger bag has 420 cal total with a serving size at the 160.

Would using the 6 egg Styrofoam egg cartridges casted into aluminum stay cool enough in a pack so you can keep eggs out in nature for a few days. Or is it a better idea to just make powder egg and add a lil water back into it while also doing your lil camp hack on hashbrown eggs?
@overweighthikerwannabe9013 ай бұрын
I might chance it with unwashed eggs fresh from a chicken coop but would be nervous about store bought at least in hot weather
@SavedByChrist943 ай бұрын
@overweighthikerwannabe901 well yeah store bought ruin quickly. Even unwashed fresh eggs will last longer in a refrigerator than store bought.
@BLACKIETHOMAS3 ай бұрын
in the past in the fall i have carried store bought eggs by coating the shells in heavy mineral oil you get in the pharmacy section..that or you can take the eggs from the fridge let them come to room temp then place then in a hard rolling boiling water for 10 sec no more remove and let cool this will thicken the inner lining of the egg and let it last a few days out of the fridge.

While watching it accurred to me if you had neither grate nor temt stake some debarked sticks of nonresinous nontoxic wood might work as a substitute. If the were green wood might even work for a time cooking with a fire. Also. I wanted to suggest that if someone uses teny stakes for this it would probably be a bad idea to use plastic ones 😊
