I've seen many gardening TV programmes in the past, where they've advised to prick out after the first "real" set of leaves have developed, rather than just the seedling ones. But if Rosy says prick out with just the first set of seedling leaves, that's the advice I'm going with!

This is the only video I have found so far which explains in detail when and how to prick out seedlings and when is the ideal time to remove them from the block tray. It is very useful, thank you!

Thank you, it’s good to see the ideal size of the seedling for pricking out.

Rosy- if pricking out seedlings is impossible due to mobility issues and lack of energy, what would be the best alternativ to get healthy plants? One seed per plug in plant plugs (with potential loss of several plugs due to lack of germination) or a few seeds per plug and letting them grow together if several of them germinate? Any thoughts on making the process easy yet getting exeptable plants? Thanks for great videos! 😊

Thank you. Really informative.

Many of mine I germinate on their own 1cm square piece of wet kitchen paper. I can then transfer the seedling (with the paper if the root has penetrated).

Spot on advice, but the key to this is being organised and vigilant. I had Schizanthus on the go last month, and the window of opportunity where they were exactly right to be pricked out was a matter of days. I missed it and ended up with Rosy's second scenario (wrestling with overly established seedlings). It's all about being organised... which I'm not! 😆

Very informative and helpful. Can I ask if we have to fertilise seedlings at all and if yes at what stage? 💚

Thank you that was very helpful. Unfortunately, I did it back to front! I planted the seeds directly into the compartment seed tray first. Now I will have to transfer them to small pots. Or maybe I can just thin them out and leave just one seedling in each compartment? Learning all the time as they say!

My Winter sown seeds have germinated. But the temps are still in the low 30's at night. I'm afraid to prick them out without the cover of the milk jug. Suggestions?

Question for you, are you using a different soil in the cell trays than what you used for germination? I’ve been using a vermiculite mix for germination and want to know if they should be pricked out and placed into more of a potting soil/compost as this will contain more nutrients.

@pendlera2959 Жыл бұрын
As I understand it, seeds have all the nutrients they need to grow the cotyledons and I think their first set of true leaves, but after that they need external nutrients. So by the time you're ready to pot them up, they do need either a nutritious soil or some fertilizer.
@ChopChic1 Жыл бұрын
@@pendlera2959 Excellent response and my personal experience now can confirm this is true. I ran a little experiment where I used my home made compost to pot up my tomato plants and used a Home Depot compost for others. The plant in my home made compost grew several inches higher than the others in Home Depot compost. This tells me I'm making great compost that exceeds what you can buy at the big box stores.

thats a lot of damp soil for such a tiny seedling , conflicting view , monty says wait until true leaves, so which do we do ???? !!!!

Don't you have to wait until there's a "true" leaf?
