After providing your villagers the basics - a home, food, and warmth - you have to start thinking about building your realm's defenses while also ensuring that it as a sustainable source of all of its supplies. To do that, we're going to focus on growing our economy by establishing trade routes, and we'll battle bandits not only for our safety, but also to take their spoilers. We'll create our own battalions and even hire mercenaries a few times. And while most of the time things will go to plan, once and a while, things go off the rails.... which will happen to us today.
In addition, we'll level up all of our burgage plots, get our first artisans, finish our manor, level up our church, acquire multiple new regions, and significantly grow our city. This is a BIG one. Enjoy!

I misspoke - tax collections cannot be used to purchase other regions - that's influence! Sorry for the confusion - still learning this one! Second Edit - figured out battle on stream last night. Won't have the archers run as fast as they can into a slaughter anymore and we'll have them face the right direction, haha!

The reason that your troops/militia are running out of energy is because they are sprinting to the place you send them to. If you click on the little running man button it will disable sprinting, they will walk instead and retain stamina 😊 Another thing I’ve noticed in other videos is that you can click and drag a spot on the ground to put your troops into a formation. It might be helpful to do this and have your close combat troops in a line at the front, and then ranged fighters behind them. Hopefully that is helpful! Loving this series 🎉❤

Those kinds of debates took place in several cities in the Low Countries in the lead up to the 80 Years War. One of the precipitating factors that led to all-out war between the Dutch and the King of Spain were reports that several communities had take it upon themselves to budget for German mercenaries on retainer for...unspecified purposes.

You'll definitely want to figure out how the combat system works. For instance, unless there is an "attack move" option, your troops will just move to the location you indicated rather than engage bandits. For mercenaries, when hiring it indicates what region they'll spawn in. Seems to always be a region on the side of the map, thus why they always were far away. For actual combat, archers will fight in melee if there aren't melee units to buffer (e.g. what happened with the cheap mercs both times). You'll want to micromanage a bit more so your units can do things like flank, keep distance, etc. As for the battle where you lost retainers, it seems like the incoming bandits broke their morale? Hard to tell from the video.

When you are fighting, you need to change your units from column formation to line formation (with the lines facing towards your enemies). The combat in this game works realistically not like traditional rts' like Starcraft or Age of Empires. select a unit, then click and drag a line from left to right to form the unit up. to engage in a line for maximum effectiveness. because you never form up your units, they keep getting smashed by the bandits. Also, you can use your personal wealth to increase the numbers of your personal retinue which will be your best fighters.

Very minor nitpick Phil, but that tannery is way too close to town: Historically, tanneries would have been quite far out of town due to the incredible smell they would produce. Tanneries used fermented urine and poop to tan the leather and so many towns had requirements for how far away from the town they would be. Loving the manor lords content keep it coming!

fun fact, the grass roofing is called thatch and has been a very common roofing method as it is made from hay or the stocks leftover from wheat harvesting. its still used today to protect houses in the uk and Ireland (idk if its used in other parts of Europe) from leaks in the roof because of how easy it can be replaced - a lot of sustainable construction companies have also turned to this method because this! also, im loving this series! it would be cool to see you integrate the storytelling you do with the magnolia county series

for future, the reason your soldiers were so ineffective is that you were simply ordering them to walk towards/into the bandits and raiders and not actually telling them to attack. so you were sending your archers right into melee with the bandits instead of shooting them and losing them because of that or they were walking right past them like the earlier battles. maybe try directly clicking on the opponents in future so they'll attack/shoot as soon as they're able, im not quite sure how the combat is handledin Manor Lords. hope this helps! its been very fun watching you create this village from the ground up!

You're doing everything great! Except for the battles haha. No worries though! If you're familiar with the Total war games, this game kinda works like that. The formations/troops you have for the most part don't automatically fight the way they should. You have to position yourself, give out attack orders, watch out for flankings. The biggest blunder you were doing a couple of times, was giving your archers move orders right into the arms of the enemy melee troops. What you can do with archers, is position them facing the enemy, a decent distance away from the enemy line. They will then automatically start shooting when in range. At 40:00 I think the battle would've been won by letting your archers get a few volleys off. If you're not familiar with the Total War games, I hope i clued you in at least a little bit on what to do, and not do.

29:18 The reason your mercenary archers went for melee is that combat in this game is total war inspired, what that means you need to actually command your troops on what they have to do and they will abandon the order only if the get forced into melee by enemy. If you want your archers to shoot you need to order them where to form up and they will start shooting (I'm pretty sure you can also tell them who to shoot at), if you just send them forward into enemy infantry they'll get caught by them and start fighting in melee. Edit: As I continued watching the video, you really need to learn the combat system. Fights aren't like in many citybuilders where you just pump out troops and win if you have more, or higher quality. All the options you have there are to allow for more tactical plays, surrounded enemy breaks faster, but same goes for your man, if you let one unit face four they will die, even if they're some high quality retinue. If you place a unit of infantry to bind enemy in melee and then use archers to flank and shoot into side or back of the enemy they will have much more impact than if they were just shooting in front of enemy shields. What terrain you fight on also matters, if your men fight up hill their efficiency will decrease and they will loose more men (or even be defeated entirely) against enemy weaker then they are. In conclusion, as much as I like your videos and how you build the town, I just can't watch the battles, what I see hurts my eyes, I understand that you probably don't have much experience with this type of gameplay so I hope some of what I wrote will help you improve at that aspect of the game and I'm waiting for the next video with hopefully better managed battles.

advice for combat from a dude who isnt very good at total war, in a comment section already full of advice about combat, in a rough sustain/improve format ok here we go sustains : - There was one particular moment where you had moved your units outside of the enemy encampment and sat waiting for their stamina to regenerate (even though the stamina had not depleted). This move allowed your troops to be as prepared as possible for the fight ahead, and was overall the correct line of thought when moving troops towards combat. This is excellent, and often an oversight for beginners in tactics. - You've maintained a decent numerical advantage over your opponent for most fights, which while seemingly simple, is pretty foundational to a concise victory. Continue picking fights that are easy victories, as well as avoiding fights that are obvious losses. - This series (i love it keep it going) improves : - Deliberacy. Tactics are best when they're done deliberately. That means having an idea of what you're going to be doing ahead of time and executing that idea step-by-step. At a couple of points in the video, you were ordering troops to march past the enemy and experiencing disappointment when they would proceed to march past the enemy. Don't be afraid to tune it back, slow it down, and break your orders up into steps. Warfare isn't exactly *fast*, especially open medieval combat, nor is it a passive task. Time must be spent giving proper orders, observing, and reacting to the battle. You should be hasty in an effort to maintain the "momentum" of combat, but you shouldn't be *rushed* when making and executing decisions. Familiarize yourself with the orders you can give, and don't shy away from actively utilizing them to gain an advantage. As an example, instead of charging your spearmen in a column towards the camp, set them up atop a hill in a shoulder-to-shoulder line, with their shields up, and bait the enemy towards you. Keep a second set of infantry back behind the conflict which you can use to react to the enemy's actions. Charge with the attack order, flank, encompass, and completely overwhelm the enemy from the rear. Unless they have formations that are multiple lines deep, they will not be able to defend their front and back at the same time. Make the enemy play into your formation, and then react to their mistakes to gain the upper hand. general advice going forward : Assuming this game's combat scale increases greatly in the mid-to-late game, you will find yourself needing to form Battle Formations in order to handle the larger armies with multiple moving parts. Even at this larger scale, don't neglect the fundamentals. Lead with a wall of shields, flank with archers, move your lines in response to your enemy and play into their mistakes. If cavalry are charging your archers and you have spearmen nearby to help, use the hell out of them, punish the enemy as much as possible. For further advice, the Total War community has an extensive list of guides both specific to total war and universally applicable across the majority of Medieval Strategy. The Mount and Blade community also has a surplus of tactical guides, frequently focused around smaller units due to the nature of the game. loving this series so far, you've got me absolutely stoked for this game's release. hopefully with all of this you'll be able to stave off the bandit hordes for just that little bit longer. edit here because i just made it to the 40 minute mark IMMEDIATELY after posting this. This one is difficult to break down without sounding downright critical, so i will do my best to rip the bandaids off in a constructive manner : Blunder #1 : You marched your local army away from your central village, causing both the brigands to have to walk less distance to fight you, as well as increasing the distance your mercenaries would have to walk to help your army. That is a big blunder. As opposed to rushing your men to conflict, a more passive approach could've been taken, drawing the raiders to your town to fight as one force with superior numbers. As mentioned before, a defensive approach will more often than not be better than the outright aggressive one. Blunder #2 : You sent both of your mercenary groups to where the brigands were but you did not use an attack order, resulting in neither group going on the offensive and both groups being progressively slaughtered and routed. I'm going to sound like a broken record amongst all of the other commenters, but you NEED to give orders beyond movement marks. The units will commit only to the orders given to them, they do not have the personal agency to break formation and attack the enemy independently unless ordered to. This prevents battle formations from breaking down into human stabbing puddles, but you MUST hit the right buttons for it to work. Even if the blunders did not occur, you may have even still lost the fight numerically. The difficulty curve for combat shown here is certainly sharp, perhaps my rambling will help get you ahead of it. It would be devastating to see your town capitulate so soon. Can't wait to see how it goes next time!

As a lord, you need to ensure your tenants are generating wealth from the land you've granted them. In game terms, every burgage plot with the available real estate should be contributing to the community. With the ability to plant vegetable gardens, grow orchards, raise goats and chickens, the commoners (non-artisans) can increase food variety and overall happiness. I know you've added chickens to a couple of homes, but unless I missed something in the couple of hours of video so far, you seem to be leaving a good portion of your wealth potential on the table. I always love your videos, and now that others have commented on the military (lack of) strategies employed, we can avoid the pain of watching your subjects being cut down in their prime by the random groups of outlaw bandits and thugs preying on the families you are expected to protect. A few tips for the combat. 1. Don't send them forward to meet the enemy. If the enemy is coming towards you, pick a place to wait for them, preferably high ground. 2. Put your militia on 'stand your ground'. These guys aren't very well-trained or well-equipped, so the defense bonus is really important for helping them survive the battle. 3. Your retinue is small but very strong, so once the enemy is engaged with your militia, send the retinue around and charge the enemy from behind. This is going to destroy their morale and it won't be long before they rout. Put them on 'push forward' for good measure. They're very powerful and attacking from behind, so unlikely to take losses, especially with how short the battle is likely to be.

While many game elements in this game are not unique, I do really appreciate the small improvements the developer has made to make them feel so much more impactful or immersive. Details such as part of your army being actual villagers with a regular job. Or the burgage plots also producing some food items. Or not assigning a single worker but an entire family to a career where they help each other. It looks so amazing, and I'm really excited to play it. I do really hope the game will remain challenging in the late game though, not much of that to be seen in these play throughs yet, but I guess time will tell.

History nerd incoming! :-P Firstly, it's thatch roofs, so many many layers of straw. They make very effective roofs, being both waterproof and very well insulated. It just requires a lot more upkeep as the roof needs to be replaced every decade or so. Secondly, the tannery is far too close to the village. They would normally be a good half mile away from the edge of the village because the smell of the tanning would be horrendous! If you're not sure what tanning entails, I'd google it as it's not exactly family friendly! But yeah, no way they'd have a tannery that close to houses!

Holding down Tab I believe shows info for buildings and such without clicking on them. Also, it's better to build chickens/goats on homes that have a small backyard while the larger ones for vegetables as they can have a bigger yield from the size. Just stuff I've seen from others.

Phil, from following your CS videos for a long time I know you enjoy realism in your builds, and I love that the layout of your village looks quite organic so far. For appearances, don't forget to reserve a small green space near your centre as a village green (for events) as well as a larger field at the outskirts as a commons (for cattle). It looks like you already have a nice Lord's forrest near your manor zo all good there. I do think you need a bit of practice on the battle side of Medieval life ;)

18:57 the alert says to "connect the building to the King's road" for some reason it didn't register that the building was connected to the road even tho it is. Unless it says "route required", you don't need to establish a trade route to trade. Unless you want a trader to only come for that specific ressource.

He built the trade post on a path branching out from the king's road, instead of building it on the king's road, I think that was the problem.

@BR-mk7uy I noticed that when he placed it. The game seems to be all about deliberate placement of buildings and troops. CCP doesn't seem to have the RST experience for the combat system (needs more deliberate strategy/tactics).

I like your layouts, they're pleasing to behold. Good job. Some tips that may help you quite a bit. Could have had a much better chance to stabilize the economy and regional wealth by first securing the food supply. The farming venture was mostly a flop. It needs a greater investment, so much so it doesn't seem feasible until later stages of the game, when the economy is already stable. From what I've seen on other playthroughs, chickens (for assured quantity and food safety) and vegetables (for variety -- more citizen approval -- faster population increase). Continue the berry gathering and hunting since they supplement well the food variety bonus. Afterwards, focusing on a chain of production per trade outpost. Far greater yield in terms of regional wealth both short and long term and all the more liberty to expand and further develop. For instance, you had a metric ton of clay - for a quick cash grab, set the max quantity to 100 pieces, have the reset refined into roof tiles and voila - one trade outpost is now constantly busy and a cash flow is guaranteed (out of map trade is not yet balanced yet, there's always a demand for your output). When regional wealth is overflowing, the game objective is only a matter of time; ranged units are currently OP since ammunition is not an issue plus crafting warbows is quite lucrative (it only requires planks and tier 3 housing).

The 'grass roof' is actually made of thatch reed/water reed, which in Germany and Netherlands had been very commonly used material to build roofs from. The roofs last about 30 years, so every generation had to redo the roof. That might be a reason why fortunately the knowledge on how to build these is not yet lost. Reed roofs are becoming more popular again.
