I grew Brocoli in a sunny window. First they were very leggy. However the second time I grew seedlings I used a seedling mix and pressed down the soil and the seedlings grew fuller snd less leggy.

I have been growing broccoli in containers for a couple of years with good results. I will be using the Trifecta from now on for larger heads. My zone is 8, so I get 2 plantings. Thanks for the video.

Wow… am I late!!! Hi Kim! I’ll be growing broccoli for the first time this year! I started it indoors already, but I didn’t realize it would germinate so quickly. It’s still small, but it’s growing under my grow lights. We won’t have our last frost until late February or early March. I’ll have to check to be sure, but I’ll harden them off and plant them outside in containers, three plants per container. I’ve been watching your videos for several years now. You, CaliCamera Guy, and Gary. Thank you so much for sharing your gardening journey! I truly appreciate the knowledge you are offering. Donna Grow Zone 8B Coastal Georgia

You could use one of them cloth reusable bags you get at the grocery store for $5
@ladaminuetkittens52162 жыл бұрын
The price of the bag plus the price of the soil plus the price of the fertilizer, plus the price of the seedling (your local Home Depot sells one plant for $ 4.49) or the price of growing the seedling at home and that after all that effort and three months of watering you MAY have one broccoli. IF IT GROWS THE HEAD - WHICH IN SAN DIEGO WEATHER MOSTLY DOES NOT. I guess the price of that single broccoli exceeds $50. But it will be organic. Look at Patrick Dolan in IL - One Yard Revolution . That is frugal gardening.

Gosh, you have wimpy broccoli if it can only take 20 degrees. Up here in the great white north, we'll put coats & hats on ours and they over-winter until next spring, altho' one year, I did have a broccoli that started banging on my door to come in overnight, but it had too many bugs so I kicked it out. It died,(sigh). On a more serious note, beautiful transplant! No broc this year but I'm planning next years garden, just will need to get a "few" more buckets so I can do some.

What do you recommend to combat whatever bugs (those white broccoli moths/worms I've been reading about, I assume🤷♀️) are eating holes in all of my beautiful broccoli leaves? So far I have tried going out with a black light flashlight at night trying to find a worms to plug them off, but I've never found any. And I've tried sprinkling sluggo pellets. This is probably a really stupid question, but it's my first garden and I was wondering once all my broccoli leaves have the holes that they do in them, throughout the growing season those will never go away, right? Or would I need to just throw my plants away? There are about 3-5 dime size holes in every huge leaf.😔

Broccoli has always been a failure in my raised bed. But to be honest.... Buying that large container, the soil , and if one needs to buy the plant, that is awfully expensive broccoli. I realize you will be reusing the container, but how long will it take to even break even? I'll try to put them in my existing planting areas. Maybe cover with shade cloth when California has our hot winter days. Thanks for that tip....
@CaliKim298 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying - saving money in the garden is very important. However, the Smart Pots containers are very reasonable, this black version of this container with handles is under $15, and it will last forever! I purchase soil suitable for containers in bulk at a a local soil company for $35 a yard. Even if you purchase bagged soil, it can be refreshed and reused from season to season, as I show in this video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZPTZ4eoob52pMU. One reason I do like growing broccoli in containers here in So Cal is that they are so convenient to move when our winter days get hot, as you mentioned. Hope this helps give you an idea of how container growing can be very economical - let me know if you give it a try!

And don't forget, after harvesting the main head, side shoots continue producing smaller heads...AND the leaves are delicious too!

0:50 Doesn't a 1ft diameter circle have an area of1/2 * 1/2 * 3.14 = 0.78 sq feet? Win a depth of 1 foot, that gives 0.78 cubic feet, not 2 cubic feet.

Well guess I need to get my Broccoli in the ground too :) I dont have a 15 gallon container do you think i can get away with planting my broccoli in a blue reusable walmart bag?
@KonjikiKonjiki7 жыл бұрын
Hi Benja, I've been trying out container gardening in grow bags and shopping bags. The WalMart blue bags are only about 7 gallons in size. Last year I grew zucchini and cucumber plants in 15, 10, and 7 gallon grow bags and while the ones in the 7 gallon bags grew, there was a marked difference in productivity. Best of luck with your garden this year! ^_^

I am growing in Walmart bags too. The bags I'm using when filled are almost 24" around in diameter. (About 24"x18" wide but the way the mix settles rounds them out.)

I'm a brand new 'gardener" probably shouldn't even claim that title because this is my first year ever. I live in NY and I wanted to start with sweet peppers tomatos probably cherry and then I thought broccoli because my 3 year old loves it. I like the smart pots idea but I'm curious how big of a bag of soil will I need to fill the 13 gallon pot. The soil I have bought so far has been in cubic feet so I don't know how that translates . and Id love to see the end result of your broccoli do you have any links?

Kim....Aphids attack my broccoli so badly here in the NW. It's so bad that I haven't planted it for a couple years. Do you have these issues?
@CaliKim298 жыл бұрын
Hello Dolly, always a bummer to see those aphids on your plants. I first wash off aphids with a stream of water, then spray with Neem Oil, I get mine from Gary at The Rusted Garden, therustedgarden.blogspot.com/p/100-cold-pressed-neem-oil-for-sale.html. You do have to spray regularly, or even preventatively for best results. Hope this helps!
