Well I didn’t scale weigh it coz all I had were sucky food scale but somewhere around 3grams. I would suggest taking a gram or half for a start and I got mine from doc.brenttt.

For those watching this that don’t know, she’s doing what’s called the “Broke Boi Tek” (PhillyGoldenTeacher has a full series on this method) which is basically just using brown rice instead of other more common grains (whole oats, wild bird seed, rye berries, etc.) and instead of using a pressure cooker to sterilize the grain jars, you just steam it. I would highly advise against using this if you can afford to get a pressure cooker that can reach 15 psi because the risk for contamination is way higher with this method.

@@mousegw2415 you’re right we should, but unfortunately in such a clandestine hobby like home mycology it’s pretty hard to get solid statistics. A pressure cooker isn’t necessary but it’s pretty damn important to avoid contamination.

@@Meowmeow11721 yea, fair enough then. from a scientific standpoint there seems to be too much information thrown around without any studying to back it up. (Not to say you are wrong or anything about pressure cooking. I certainly pressure cook my substrates/spawns when needed.) Literally the other day I saw a video of someone preparing coir as a bulk substrate and stating "you need to sterilize the shoebox with iso (alcohol), otherwise contams will grow" And I had to stop and think about that... like... He's going to keep doing this because he will get good results, but will likely take a very long time to realize that coir doesn't need prep like that. It's not a very nutritious substrate. I can only imagine that in 50 to 100 years, people will look back and say things like "I can't believe they thought they had to do that step *every* single time." Stay curious and experiment a little, for the sake of all of mycology

Yeah, if you do it like this you're asking for frustration. That rice will stick together and clump. Rye grain and a pressure cooker is the way to go.

naw. you inoculate a medium like that with a syringe and you're only looking at about 6 weeks.
