Seems like getting the inoculant fully blended in the first place is the best option. No shaking required!

What do you recommend with all in one bag break ups?

Hi Kevin, thanks for commenting brother - you technically never have to shake your grains in any scenario, shaking is only done to speed up the process - that’s more or less the primary purpose. All in one kit - you could pinch and break up the very bottom of the bag where the grains are but you’d have to avoid dislodging the substrate on top of the grains. In my opinion, it’s probably best to wait for the grains to fully colonise before it makes its way up to the substrate layer on top. I plan on making an all in one kit at some point soon but I don’t have a lot of experience with them - just my thoughts Leo

@@MushroomMadnessOfficial yeah that's the same conclusion I came to just using common sense. Can combining the grain with the substrate too early result in contamination? Or will it just stall out the growth of mycelium? My grain is about 50% colonized from the outside looking in (of course I can't see the middle where I injected it) I'm not gonna mix it for another week. I was just wondering the downfall of mixing grain into substrate too early.

@@kevinhowe3280since your grow kit is sealed, there’s little risk of contamination since no dirty air can get in, even if you were to mix uncolonised grains in with the substrate, early. In the past, I’ve even inoculated substrate blocks with agar alone and no grains, so it might work. If you are going to mix early, make sure that you really throughly distribute those grains throughout the bag with the substrate, this will ensure even distribution and growth. You never want to shake substrate after it’s been mixed with grains - so you have to get the shake right the first time. I personally would just give it a go, see what happens. Making mistakes generates interesting results, and if it fails, you have a new experience that you can teach about or share. Either way, you win my brother. Leo
