From media laughing stock to media craze, from thousands of viewers to millions-esports has eclipsed all expectations in the last decade.
But while competitive gaming has come a long way since its humble beginnings, it hasn’t been without its own controversies.
And that’s no real surprise, just look at sports. From the NFL’s Deflategate and head trauma controversies to the MLB’s doping scandals and match fixing that dates back to 1919, one thing is pretty clear when it comes to professional sports-sometimes the spirit of competition gets lost in the money and fame.
And esports is no exception.
Now, in 2017, with the announcement of NA LCS franchising and the continued anticipation of the soon-to-come Overwatch League, esports takes yet another step towards maturity.
As the industry continues to move forward, the interest and investments from the sports world is bound to lead to more professionalism, stability, and yes, scandals.

The problem is that they agreed to split the winnings (IE, collusion) and even worse, the outcome of the match affected the matchups/seeding of other teams. Winnings splits used to be common at local FGC tournaments as well (mostly because some players actually need to get decent prize money because they do it for a living) so it wasn't uncommon to offer a split, then play out the finals normally. Unfortunately, after several incidents where players didn't play seriously in the finals after agreeing to a split most tournament organizers started banning and penalizing players who offered winnings splits as collusion.

@danlorett2184
@danlorett2184 5 жыл бұрын
This wasn't uncommon years ago in the FGC because before a lot of sponsors started picking up players a lot of the pros literally needed to get winnings as their job. So it wasn't uncommon back then for players who made it to grand finals (especially pros who had been there before a lot) to split winnings so they had a steady income whether they won or lost. It was something that could be considered shady but was allowed because of the monetary necessity at the time. However, after a few scandals of other players (not so much well-known pros) not playing seriously in finals after agreeing to a split, most TOs regard splits as collusion and heavily punish it. Just one of those rules that had to be made after people abused the system.

Kourosh Adli I mean even then they still played the match and both tried to win. Iirc splitting prize pools isn't actually that uncommon since a lot of pro players literally depend on the sport for there livelihoods. I would guess the only way that the thing they wanted to do was if they agreed in advance. At the end of the day as long as the audience enjoyed it and the players did it voluntarily I don't see a big problem with what happened.

Sir Taco Master i mean.. The.. When u right click the hero.. The enemy creeps charge you ...(maybe in order to save their hero 😃) and well we can use it for our benefits.. So when the lane is going to be pushed due to a double wave.. Or a single wave with double ranged creep....we can set the timing right and click on the enemy.. So that the enemy creeps aggro towards u.. And as u move back.. They start hitting our ranged creep( to be noted that the damage of the ranged creeps is more than the melee creeps, but the armour and hp are less, so when u kill the ranged.. The lane gets pushed towards your side) and that is the aggro.. But that also helps in you denying the ranged creep so that the enemy doesnot get the max of the xp and no gold.. Well that is atleast the basics... And idk if LoL has it.. But well... Was gonna try it after my exams... But... The fact that we gotta buy the champions is.. Uk a more like " Pay to win" situation.. Which i think cuts out the point of having fun, and i hear some of the players of the community are just as toxic as in dota2....😁..so will try it out sometime...
@marcellb579

Sumiran Pradhan sorry to say buddy league has the same exact thing. You hit a champ with an auto or skillshot the creeps aggro to you. & You can get all the champs for free if you grind out (I admit it takes a very long time to grind out enough for all the champs.) And every game that's not marketed towards toddlers have a bit of toxicity.... But if you are triggered easily I recommend you hit /mute all lmao

And then we got many other scandals in csgo that maybe should have been mentioned, the KQLY VAC ban scandal being one of them along with the PEA Scandal involving player rights and many more

E sports: Brain>Brawn. There is little to no scientific basis that men or women have an inherent intelligence/motor skills advantage over the other. Fair game. Sports: Brawn>Brain. There is scientific basis that men and women have different bodies that can give them physical advantages over the other. Not fair game. Some other Sports: Brawn=Brain. These ones are often mixed. Females in high elo of many esports cannot compete with the level that men play at. I am not an expert on the subject but in league of legends i don't believe that there is a single woman in challenger. It doesn't mean that they aren't good enough, but they definitely have a lack of competition (especially when you see the top streamers that are female on league barely being in plat/diamond and a few of them being gold and below)

DevILX7 DevILX7 Actually there are many females in challenger, for example 여최미, korean female midlaner. They just dont reveal their genders, because why would they when most of the reactions would be negative? You also have to think about the toxicity towards female players in league of legends, which is why they do not play league in general, added on to the already salty rift. I think it is not because of genetics (in terms of skill) , but rather because of the negativity and how there is a bigger male playerbase than female. Also, I think that males tend to be more competitive, due to their nature, which could be a factor of why there is more male players on the rift.

It was only a split second, but that clip with the media laughing off esports gets me all salted up like some french fries. The media is always so out of touch with the common people. Also, that story about separating male and female players isn't as sexist as people think it is. EVERY other sport separates males and females because males have a physical advantage. I believe that advantage extends to reflexes and improvisation and that's why despite being half the population you will never see females dominating most sports competitions where they have to compete with men. Even if women were built exactly like men biologically and mentally women just aren't generally interested in these things like men are and you can't force women to be interested. Even at conventions most girls show up to do things like cosplay because it more aligns with their interests.

I don't think physical advantages hold much (if any) advantages in the eSports scene. I think it's pretty inherent with low female population counts and the fact that female gamers tend to play more casually than male players (likely due to societal norms). Of the girl gamers that I have actually played with competitively, I've never noticed a solid difference between their performance and the performances of the guys. I played on a D1/Masters team in Smite and the girls in that clan could go head-to-head with the guys, with two of the girls actually getting picked for the main roster but turning it down to pursue college. I grinded that game for 4000+ hours after already being skilled with PC games, and they could certainly pose a threat to my roster spot. Other games show a similar trend to what I saw in Smite, with very few girls seriously competing but with many of them still reaching the top levels of the game (examples include Geguri and Barcode_ow in Overwatch for instance).
@anottakenusername3189

You say "societal norms" as though it's a hurdle women have to deal with because of the "patriarchy" but if something so small holds you back from having fun or from what you are most passionate about then it just shows a very fragile resolve which would never be enough to stop a serious male. These guys know of the gamer stigma and how they most likely aren't going to get laid playing video games all day, but that doesn't stop them. I bet girls can get good enough to beat most guys, but to compete against guys who take this seriously, nah. Here is a video that perfectly illustrates my point about reflexes. Whenever you see mixed sex doubles tennis it always ends up the same way with the females simply not being able to handle male serves. Even Serena Williams in interviews admits she can't deal with it and you might argue that strength is a factor but a lot of times girls can't even react fast enough to reach the ball. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fn2xepWdqZuagMU

By the way just to be clear, some people assume this sort of topic is brought up to put down women, but that's not the point. Underdog wins and surprise upsets are the best kind of stories so I would love to see a girl win it all. At the same time I can't help but feel the need to face the reality of how unlikely that is, and unfortunately there will always be politically correct sjws calling anyone sexist for noticing this trend and proposing solutions like separate sex leagues. The girl you mentioned who gave up to pursue college did the smart thing because statistically she is much more likely to be successful and happier down that path. The real question is not how come women can't be dedicated enough to reach higher levels of play, but why is it that there are men insane enough to dedicate themselves to tasks to such an extreme degree without any guarantee of success?

For the folks talking about men vs women in esports... Men and women are most likely very much not equal in esports, as many of the characteristics that make men better physical sports carry over to esports and other competitive games (chess, go, etc). Some are biological and some are social conditions. The fact of the matter is there hasn't been enough conclusive research to prove one way or the other. However the majority of evidence so far points to men having the highest skill cap and drive to win. Here's some literature for you folks. It is ridiculous to use yourself as an example for chess. go look at the professional rankings for chess. Despite there being plenty of professional, amazing female chess players, the top players are all male. Historically, and in the modern day. Don't get me started on the 'more men play, more men earn more etc.' considering the huge amounts of sponsorship going to women in chess right now to 'make it equal' between the genders, and yet still, the top players are all male. Besides, you may not realise it, but playing esports requires continual use of fast-twitch muscles. There isn't a huge difference between male and female esports athletes though, but that is only in the averages. At the extremes (which is where you need to be for professional players), these tiny differences mean a lot.
@kilianjones549
@kilianjones549 6 жыл бұрын
Its not about whos best right now, women are "worse" at sports because of the history of exclusion. Smaller muscles = history of males doing the physical work and making the females stay inside and tend to the home, Drive to win is all due to what we tell our kids when they are little. There is different differences between males and females when it comes to sports, but its due to a long and evil history of exclusion. Continuing that exclusion is just gonna make it worse. I don't understand why people look at the differences and say "oh since on average men are better then women, we better only let men play, that will fix it" instead of letting those with the skills play. if we want the differences to go away then you have to let everyone play and eventually it will all balance out. Also your statement about averages makes no sense, because as you said the pros are on the extremes. Just because the average male should be better at a game then a average male doesn't mean that top 100 players will follow that same rule. They are pros for a reason, and their skills are not defined by averages, meaning that a top females players could easily out think or skill a male competitor at her level. And finally i think your comment about muscles in for twitch shooting is insane. It takes a tiny amount of force to move a mouse or press a button and besides that amount of force its all in the aiming, neither of these things give males a natural advantage>
@hazzsin3579
@hazzsin3579 6 жыл бұрын
Holy crap, I can't believe you could believe that. "Smaller muscles = history of males doing the physical work and making the females stay inside" You mean Olympic female athletes who spend their entire lives training have smaller muscles because historically men didn't let womenplay? You mean, you seriously believe that? That someone's muscles today are smaller because of how their race/gender was treated historically. You don't think it has anything to do with testosterone? Perhaps you need to learn some biology. What about lions. Male lions easily overpower female lions even though female lions do most of the hunting and work while the males sleep and eat. Maybe you have magical explanations for that. Or that fact that in pretty much all mammals, the males are bigger and stronger than the females. And what do muscles have to do with chess? Did you read my comment: "Despite there being plenty of professional, amazing female chess players, the top players are all male." And you say :"oh since on average men are better then women, we better only let men play" but we aren't talking about averages here. Men form the outliers of society. They are the poorest (most homeless are male) and they are the richest (richest people in the world are all male). Men are the dumbest (most prisoners are male) and the smartest (most scientists, doctors, engineers are male). When we watch a sport, we only want to see the best players. No one cares about the b team. There was an all female lol team (the sirens I believe) and they had huge sponsorship deals and money at the time (since it was considered a huge opportunity to draw more girls into the sport and increase viewership). They got utterly destroyed by the other teams.
@kilianjones549
@kilianjones549 6 жыл бұрын
You should do some research before you talk about lions. While it is true that males are over all stronger in straight up fights, the females are faster and quicker because they do the hunting while males handle the land disputes and the "fighting". WOW would you look at that, the thing you do a lot through history decides how your body and mind evolves. When it comes to chess, there is still a huge difference in the number of men who play chess and the number of women who play chess, as it is with all of the examples you listed. More people = greater chance to hit the jack pot and find the next Tom Brady of chess or esports. Ever wonder why the bigger schools have better sports teams? Its because they have more people to draw from and that allows them to have an advantage in finding better players. Please note that this only works with public schools as private school can use money to recruit. As for your interesting thoughts on how men are the best and the worst, I think that all goes back to how we raise people. If men are always told that they have to be the best, they develop that confidence to go out and take risks, take on the world and either win or lose. On the other hand women are traditionally told to shut up and sit down, to play it safe and hide in the middle, which is what they end up doing. Moving on to your last example, how you only want to watch the best, they why do you care if they are male or female? Lets say there's a player that the best ever and she happens to be female. Are you not gonna let her compete on the biggest stage just because ON AVERAGE males are better then females due to biological differences because of historical exclusion? Doesn't make sense to me. Idc about all female teams or all male teams, I just wanna watch people that are good at the game. The best female players that can compete with the best males shouldn't be held back just because of averages.
@hazzsin3579

You do know that thousands of women play on solo-que, and yet none of them are rank 1? The best female teams can't compete with the best male teams. I just gave you an example - the sirens, a female LOL team. You look at the fastest sprinters in the world. The top ranking female doesn't even beat the 20th ranked male. You think men are told to be the best so they become the best? Have you seen the shitty girl-power movies hollywood is pumping out now. Apparently a girl can take on fully grown, trained men in her high heels because girl power. You think women are told to shut up and sit down? Where do you live? Rural Africa, under a dictator? You keep saying it has got to do with how we raise people. Olympic athletes start training when they are 3. They are raised athletes. Yet the females cannot compete with the males in most of the sports. You are telling me that those Olympic athletes are told to shut up and sit down? I don't care if they are male or female. I do care when they start adding women just to meet a quota, rather than selecting based on skill. The army is accepting women in now, but they get lighter entrance test. They don't have to run as far/long, they don't have to lift as much weight etc, but still they are being let in. Why? Because they are selecting women based on their gender, to fill a quota, and not based on their actual skill level. I am not talking about averages. You will find, on average, men and women are pretty similar. It is at the extremes where men seem to take over, at both ends of the spectrum. You keep saying I am selecting based on averages. Lets look at these olympic sports: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_records_in_Olympic_weightlifting - men are over 100kg in the lead over women en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_metres_at_the_Olympics - fastest women in the world is slower than the 19th fastest man in the world - lists biological factors between men and women as the issue en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon - fastest woman in the world is so much slower than the men, the list of male times doesn't even go low enough to meet the women's times I can go on. However, when you look at averages, the distinction isn't as noticeable. Men take over in the extremes. Otherwise, there are plenty of women that would woop my ass in any sporting event. Please try to understand what I am saying.

See the thing about the importance of gender division in esports is man and woman. I’m not feigning personal insecurities or anything but it’s a fact that men and women can not be emotionally pressured in sexual frustrations and all else intimate. Chess had a thing where they forbid cleavage exposure for women. It’s the same idea. If I know I’m playing against a woman, I will be disturbed sexually and emotionally. League of legends skt t1 captain forbids dating for the players for the same idea. And for sports too. Coaches recommend not dating. It’s all subconscious. Passive disadvantages not only for men but for women. Imagine a poor girl knowing they’re going to lane against quas or rekkles. She would be soaked! Sounds humorous but honestly the girls would be shaking going up against attractive players of the opposite gender. There are people who can block it out but not all. And when you can’t cover for the entirety of the player base then you have to settle for divisive regulations like gender division. And also imagine having girls AND guys on the same team. They would quite literally be fucking or brutally fighting all the time and there will be blood either way if you catch my drift 😏 Gotta play the game and gotta play it fair. Man and woman. Not completely different but extremely different. And the majority of humans can’t stand primitive instincts. Gender division is legit and a fair thing on all platforms. Brawn or brain.

Well sadly I know it's surprising but not every human of the opposite sex is attractive. Unless you're the type who'd fk a mailbox. I think it's more over a pity system to bring women into the spotlight which they wouldn't normally have. Take the olympic track and field, of course those females are so much faster than me(some random idiot male) however if they competed in the male's sprint only a few would "contend". Sadly I think the latter is more appropriate, because then when you see a chick out there hanging with the best of the best in their competition you'll truly respect their ability. Look at softball and baseball. Basketball's leagues. Soccer. I mean, it's all just pity for the females who cannot play in the male's league. Sad really that not being able to mimic each-other is what defines "equality" to some, when in reality it couldn't be more different.
