Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma has always lived in the shadows.
He lived in the shadow of his father, who never supported him. He lived in the shadow of the Smash community, who turned him into a villain. He lived in the shadow of other players, who were always just ahead of him both in terms of gameplay and tournament placings.
But through it all, he never gave up on being the best and proving everyone wrong. He never gave up on himself, or on Smash.
This is his story.

Seeing a lot of hate for him directed at his playstyle, but tbh, it's a valid fucking playstyle. In a competitive situation with high stakes, you do what it takes to win. If timing somebody out is what it takes to win, you time them out. I often see in a lot of competitive scenes people like to hate on the players that use the non-exciting strategies, but at the same time, what DO you want to watch? Somebody only play fox or falco because they're fast and good? Somebody to play puff but intentionally badly so that you can enjoy watching them lose? In the end, he's doing what it takes to win which is EXACTLY what you have to do. Mad respect for that.

Everyone has a story. Not a lot of people are able to focus on gaming in light of these circumstances. It isn’t easy to rise up against adversity like he did. He had no business being as good as Mang0 or Armada. He made it his business. He did it. He followed his dreams, got them crushed, and rose from the crumpled ruins every time until his dreams came true. A true legend. Good on ya Hbox! Best of luck in your travels and I hope you continue to enjoy Melee, Smash 4, and Smash Ultimate.

I think a big defining part of hbox's story that people should know about is how the matchup of Him vs Mang0 turned around so suddenly. Mang0 was his cryptonite, his demon. Mang0 was very good at getting in Hbox's head and had the pure aggression in his playstyle to overwhelm hbox's defense. With Mang0's puff knowledge and the fox-puff matchup being heavily favored for fox at the time, Mang0 could literally just get 3 hits and puff is already dead. It's just so easy. Before Evo 2015, Hungrybox did not beat mang0 a single time besides norcal regionals 2013 and smash the record (where mang0 was sandbagging playing falcon and mario). It got to the point where if Mang0 vs Hbox were to face each other in bracket, 99/100 people thought that Mang0 would win the set and you could even turn off the stream for a while and come back to see mang0 moving on. Mang0 was very back and forth vs the other gods of melee like Armada, Mew2king, PPMD, but you always knew that he was GUARANTEED to beat hbox. Then Evo 2015 came... At EVO 2015, the story was all on Mang0. Was Mang0 going to get the legendary 3VO? There was a video where Hbox said that he was going to stop the 3VO and he was going to bring out all the stops, but given the head to head record between those 2, we thought those were just empty words. Losers Quarters in EVO 2015 Game 1 - Mang0 takes a solid game 1. We are all thinking "Oh this is just an average hbox mang0 set, mang0 just going to pick up another free win" Game 2 - Mang0 is up 4 stocks to 3 with hbox already at 98%, while mang0 is only at 10%. At this point we all thought there really was no way Hbox can do anything. And then Mang0 just plays a little close to the ledge and gets gimped at ~50%. 3 stocks each but hbox can die to any strong hit. Hbox continues his controversial ledge camping and suddenly gets a knockdown and rests Mang0. Mang0 trades the stock back but now the stocks are even from that huge deficit at 2 to 2. Both players get to their last stocks and Hbox refuses to be eliminated while he's at over 100% and mang0 sits comfortably at 10%. It was just about to be any time that Mang0 just finishes him off with 1 more read. Then suddenly, Hbox gets a grab: Up throw Rest. The series was just evened up. Game 3 - Mang0 throws away his first stock 5 seconds into the match and SD's by running off the edge and forward airing. A very uncharacteristic technical flub. Hbox would not let this opportunity slip. He kept up his ledge grabbing and patient walling. He would not give Mang0 a single opportunity to come back. Then Mang0 SD's yet again. You could feel the disappointment as Mang0 shook his head at the 2 stock deficit he was now facing. 5 minutes have passed and Mang0 is on his last stock at 100% and Hungrybox sitting comfortably at 15%. Then...Hungrybox secures the final back air and eliminates Mang0 from the biggest melee tournament at the time. At Evo 2015, there were questions about who could possibly stop the 3VO. Would it be Armada who was winning all the melee tournaments of 2015? Would it be a fellow god PPMD who has finally come back from inactivity? Would it be Leffen, a rising demi-god who humiliated Mang0 at Apex 2015, beating him in bracket and winning 1 thousand dollars from him? No, the 3VO would be stopped by Hbox, the god who hasn't beaten Mang0 in a set ever since 2013 and the god with the worst head to head record against Mang0. But obviously this set was just a fluke. It was best of 3 and Mang0 SD'd twice on the last game. Surely Mang0 would just continue stomping Hbox in future tournaments right? The roles were suddenly reversed after that 2015 EVO set. People were starting to feel that Hbox vs Mang0 was a guaranteed win for Hbox. Hbox started a win streak vs Mang0 beating him in: TBH5, Dreamhack Winter 2015, PAX arena, Battle of the 5 gods, Pound 2016, EGLX, LTC4, and eventually EVO 2016. The curse was broken. After his win vs Armada, it felt like no one could stop Hungrybox from being the #1 melee player in the world.

this seriously made me cry. facing so many conflicts, having a full/part time job, and going through his past, he deserves more respect. Ive always loved his playstyle, at first being because it was funny seeing a jigglypuff main. but then, i saw this. being told he couldnt be the best, trying to act through all the cries of those who hated him, and even getting trashtalked on by mango, who he respected as a player. glad you made it this far Hungrybox
