Watch this elephant ear grow from May through September. It would get much bigger in a tropical location, but here in Missouri it still got massive! This giant sized Elephant Ear is from Thailand. Its name is Colocasia Gigantia. Thai Giant. It’s advertised to be the largest elephant ear in the world.
It was fun to watch it grow!

Thanks for putting the progress of the plant over the full summer into one video, that is rarely done. Your children are a credit to you, so pleasant and supportive of their Dad's interest in gardening.

I am from the tropics and they do grow big without man-made fertilizer and do good in part shade areas. I guess because of your climate and pushing it with fertilizer makes the leaves light green and brittle.

That's good to know. I should grow it again this summer and not do the miracle grow and see if it still gets that big without the fragile leaves. Thanks for the info! Appreciate it!

Thanks! no we didn't do it again. I think it would be a lot more fun where it's warmer. in Missouri it started getting colder at night in late August once the leaves finally got big. It would be fun to grow it farther south to see how much bigger it could get.

My take about the brittle leaves is that it was not an established bulb/tuber and that you destroyed the soil with the fertilizer. If you were to buy an older bulb, and planted it 6-8 inches deep, and waited for it to sprout out of the ground, then, the Elephant ears would be far more matured, and able to handle the soil conditions and some fertilizer. Second, that Miracle Gro you used is only meant for dissolving in water! You poured probably 3-6 months of Miracle Gro fertilizer directly on top of the soil of a young plant, not regarding the directions say 1 large scoop per 1.5 gallons of water every 7-14 days! That is not a slow release fertilizer! You likely gave the Elephant Ears and the entire soil a 5,000% overdose of nutrients, which made the entire soil toxic! Try planting again but first get all of that soil out of there by digging it up and dumping it somewhere else on your property. Then, start with a new fresh hole, plant a few bulbs into the ground that you can order from Ebay (They usually ship already germinated with roots and a small sprout), then mix a slow release fertilizer in the soil. Next, plant the bulb and soak with water every 3-4 days until the first sprout emerges. Then, begin watering every 2-3 days until the second leaf emerges and fully unfolds. Then, the plant should be strong enough to handle 1 serving of Miracle Gro every 7 days!!

Great advice! Thanks so much! I'm anxious to grow more again. wish we had a longer growing season here. It was fun watching it grow bigger and bigger leaves. but then it just starting to get big before it got cold outside. wish we lived somewhere tropical. Lol

The leaves of elephant ears are notorious for ripping in high winds, but I do agree with you on the miracle grow, force feeding plants with the amount of nitrogen that miracle grow has forces them to grow to fast and that's why the leaves are weak, that's also a beacon for bad bugs to come chew on it because the cell walls are so thin

They do best in morning and late morning sun light(7am to noon), but by noon time they should be in complete shade. Although, these babies can tolerate some heat; they just can't handle 100 degree temperatures.

I removed a lot of soil and replaced it with 2 huge bags of miracle grow potting soil. And then after it start growing I would add the blue miracle grow fertilizer when watering. and I dug out enough soil that it was in a low area that I could fill up with water so the water could stand there and soak in. They take lots of water

But I think we will plant that huge one from Thailand again next year though, it was really fun to watch those leaves grow
