Very I formative video! Thank you! When initially sowing the seeds (after cold stratification) what medium would you use? Just the bonsai soil mix that you have mentioned in the video? Or does the initial seedling development require something more complicated than that?

I use a mix of 3 perlite/2 peat moss, it actually works pretty well for the 1st year of growing, mine are all from cuttings under grow lights on heat mats, I get some really great Nebari and very low branch clusters like Mark says.

You referring to treating the seedling as a cutting? Simple place back into a sandy mix is fine. You push it all the way in, so the needles effectively act as a support. Keep out of the wind and direct sun of course, and keep moist at all times. Many thanks for watching!

Thanks Maurizio! In summer it will depend on your growing medium and how often you can water. The objective is for it to dry out faster so you can water faster which means you can fertilise more. In winter if you are getting freezing temperatures you may need to put them into something bigger with media too in order to buffer. You could wrap with a towel or something. However how do you protect your other bonsai in the cold, as the colander grown ones would be treated the same I would suggest.

No it will not be same. But maybe it does not matter for you. If you make small tree then better to use cutting method. If you make big tree then not so important. For both big or small tree cutting method is better because give best root spread.

Early spring is best. In my experience stratification does not affect germinate rate but it does seem to cause that all the seeds germinate at the same time, whereas without stratification the timing is much more sporadic.

Could it happen that as I grow the sacrifice branch, the lower branches die off?

Very good question. No. Unless you neglect to get sufficient light to the lower branches by thinning needles.

i'm assuming the medium is acidic? could i use the soil from around the tree i found the pine cones?

Interesting idea but I don’t think it’s a good idea to use the soil from around the tree as it will compact. There are other soils which are acidic and there are ways of making soil acidic. However pines seem to be quite tolerant of pH and I don’t think you need to intentionally make it more acidic as all growing medium becomes acidic through use of fertilizers

hi there awesome video.could you possibly please help..i have 2 small seedlings .14 months old..Scots pine..where can i find advice on next steps..they are roughly 1.5 inch of hard brown thin trunk and another 5 inch of green bushy needles. they are also in seperate pots..can u please help. best wishes dan

why no one is talking about germination to 5months of seedlings that is the toughest part. i have been trying for second year now. first year 99% of plants died between 1to 6months. mostly of root rot or critters eating them off... bugs, mice etc...
