I garuntee russian pilots thought the Ukrainian airforce is incompetent and underequiped and were told the majority of threats will come from AAA, SAMS, manpads, their eyes would be on the ground their jets bomb laden and they would not be expecting attack from the air, and historicaly the VAST majority of air to air kills were one pilot bouncing the other and shooting them down before they even knew they were in danger, the ghost would be flying a plane that russian pilots also fly, so the average russian pilot would be weary of shooting first as to not cause a friendly fire incident, also the ghost would have a seriously target rich environment all of these factors weigh heavily in the ghost favor, much much craziers things have happened in war

A wonderful story, but this isn't WWII. There just aren't enough Russian jets in the air to provide the "Ghost" with enough targets that he can splash SIX of them in a single day. You have to consider the limited combat endurance of the MiG-29 - especially with an air to air loadout, lack of tanker support, and the need to fly low for survivability. Staying close to terrain will also limit the effectiveness of his radar to detect targets. Worse for the Ghost, Ukraine doesn't have any AWACS up, let alone datalink capabilities to communicate radar information. NATO has AWACS flying nearby, but that communication chain has to be a nightmare.

It occurs to me that if this really is Ukraine's greatest pilot, he could be switching to a fresh MiG-29 that's already positioned and "hot cocked" by a reserve pilot. The MiG 29 has good radar, but it is nowhere near as advanced as what Russia has. Keep in mind the MiG 29 is pretty old (outmatched by most aircraft in service around the world), so the best way to even the odds against more advanced aircraft is to reduce your radar signature by being close to the deck and avoid BVR as much as possible.

I'm not confident that this is one guy, or even one plane. It's entirely possible that these kills are credited to one unnamed person to make the Russians nervous. Which is IMO a reasonable thing to do.

One thing that could be in play is the fact that average Russian pilot has just around 100 hours per year in the plane.. while Ukrainian pilots, like for example the Su-27 pilot killed in dogfight, had 2000 hours.. and there are supposedly multiple such experienced Ukrainian pilots flying.. so while they are outmatched with technology, experience is on their side.

Even if the ghost “isn’t real” or “can’t be proved” it’s more of a symbol than anything. And that’s all that matters now. A symbol of an underdog standing up to an oppressor.

Is it possible that the ghost is fighting over an area saturated with MANPADS operated by people who can at least distinguish friend from foe? This can definitely reduce the Russian pilot's survival rate. Also, it appears that keeping the Russians within knife fighting range is crucial. Very risky business, but people have been known to stay lucky for a while.

I mean, it's a neat story, sure... but it's just way too unlikely of it really happen! There are simply too many things speaking against it than for it to be real. Plus, as far as I've heard, the one responsible for the rumor already admitted it was born of a 4 am Discord call! He heard something about 4 Air-to-Air kills - not even from the same pilot - and made everything up on the spot...
