I find it amusing that when someone settles GS's account with the gun, 50% of the time he gets turned into red goo... But when he (more often than not) wins with the gun... his opponent figures out he's had it, pulls the chicken handle and survives. Why does GS get KIA with the gun so often?

Amazing attention to detail that a plane passing that close under you activates the check gear warning.
@KomradeDoge2 жыл бұрын
You can troll the 18 and the 14 (maybe any plane with Radar Altimeter warnings but I know those 2 for sure) by passing within 200 ft of them. It'll trigger their extra low altitude warning if they set it up and if they aren't really paying attention or are heads down they'll give some funny reactions. lol

eh, they're probably using raycasting to detect alt, so that attention to detail is actually just a side effect

There is a bigger story behind the F-15 than the plane, but the guys that pushed for its design. It was rejected many times at first, or was refused funding until an actual pilot (I think) came into the program. We almost never had the F-15.

It's also worth mentioning that the F-15 was NOT considered for HAVE GLASS V signature reduction measures - only the F-16, F-22 and F-35. My theory is that it's part of the F-15's arsenal to be that visible - "Yes, you see me. You're not going to be able to do anything with it."

Real world. In 1992 above Kunsan AB Korea I observed an F-15C and an F-18C both flown by Wing Commanders go one on one. Dog fight started above 20, 000 feet and stayed inside the perimeter of the base. From the start the F-15 was on the F-18s tail and stayed there till they were down to tree top level. The dog fight lasted over 20 minutes and at no time could the F-18 come even close to getting away from the F-15. As the fight progressed you could see the F-18 piolet was getting desperate and frustrated. The f-18 airframe just isn't that nimble. An F-16 really tears them up. Fantastic avionics on the F-18 though.

This surprised me. I was assuming the F-15 would win easily. Sounds like it’s still a better dogfighted but it’s not so dominant that it’s completely one-sided. Does the F-18E have similar results?
@vicroc42 жыл бұрын
The F-18 is a remarkably maneuverable aircraft. Remember, it was based on the YF-17, which competed against the YF-16 for the contract that would produce the Viper. So it's got a lot of the same energy-maneuverability theory behind it. And it was designed from the start with multirole capability, so it didn't suffer the same kind of slow degradation of dogfighting performance that the F-16 did.
@andreabindolini74522 жыл бұрын
The F/A-18 is deadly if encountered in its ideal arena: low altitude and low speed. Even against an F-16 when comes to high alpha capability. Current F/A-18E seems slightly less agile, with more emphasis on range, payload, avionics. But still dangerous. I've always been afraid of the Hornet, all considered. That said, the F-15 is overall superior in many aspects. Obviously is a far superior BVR platform, but even in the dogfight, if the pilot keep attention and mantain the clash in the high energy arena (higher speeds and altitudes, exploiting the vertical thanks to its phenomenal t/w ratio), it has the upper hand.
@vicroc42 жыл бұрын
@@andreabindolini7452 The Super Hornet is effectively a different aircraft, so I'm not sure how it would perform. But there's one thing I do know: it would still be a mistake for it to go vertical with a F-15. There's some things you just don't do. XD
