You can watch the F18 pilot Gonkey fight the SU30 with his F18 in training in Malaysia I believe. Its quite interesting, they end up nose to nose after the first turn most times.

that is normal export version SU30MKM, not SU30SM with 3D thrust vector, So SU30MKM would be equivalent to F-18, and SU30SM gives F-18 no chance in dogfight.

Both of us program, gcap, and fcas decided that super maneuverability is not an important trait. Only "western" program that appears to put significant importance on super maneuverability is Japan fx. But Japan cannot continue on their own and instead get involved with gcap. Now, it is not impossible for the airframe design to take 2 different type of engine, but that defeat the purpose of joint dev.

The canards are actually correct. On the Flanker, they're there more for AOA control than pure maneuverability.

Correct as it is. The plane is aerodynamically made so that it always want to backflip, especially in turn and the canards are there to prevent thaz by pushing the nose down.

What I love most about this Flanker, is the speed indicator similar to the one in the Mirage 2000. WAY better than the usual indicator in Russian planes, and I find it baffling that American planes don't have either of those.

IDK if it would change the out come much, but for most of the rounds the f18 was already turning before you started yours. The last round he was belly facing you before you started your turn. Would like to see where you both pass each other before starting the turn.

That's actually an advantage if you didn't notice it. Turning just a second before the merge allows you to jam the WEZ effectively keeping the enemy from firing their IRs. if the f-18 didn't turn before the su30sm did, the video woulda been much shorter simply becasue GS would shoot it faster.

Because Dogfights aren’t a thing in modern air combat. Even classic BVR is going away in favor of highly connected (flight, AWACS, Satellite etc.) „battlefield chess“. The best reconnaissance and the longest BVR shot wins.
