8:40 "I'll highlight the grip detail with black paint" Admit it, you just didn't want to file out all the tarnish, so you just painted over it. :-D turned out very nice though.
@Grunblau7 жыл бұрын
My intention was to not have to file it at all in the grooves but I had to because of the mold lines. Then I had bright brass showing through the tarnish. Flat black paint became the obvious solution for making the grip detail the same color!

Gorgeous, and great video. I've also thought about learning to cast things, and the first step is to build a smelting furnace. There are so many different builds and options when searching on KZbin, do you have a tip to what's nice to begin with?
@Grunblau7 жыл бұрын
+Natural Nerd I documented my entire furnace build and torch on this channel. Pay less attention to 'professional' style builds and just make a durable furnace. Don't use 'home brew' recipes or crucibles. If you do research, you'll find that those who do, end up building another one with proper refractory.

Such a grea work Brian! I had in mind to use a 3d printer to make patterns for a long time now, but I still miss the whole 3d printer part :'D Please can you tell the name of that bucket you used to polverize the sand? I've been looking for something like that for such a long time. I've tried those little icing sugar ones but they are not strong enough! I'm Kinda bored of using colander and hands for that work because is really slow :) Thanks for sharing mate.

The number of risky movements you do is astonishing. e.g. using a nail gun, with your thumb right next to the piece to be nailed, cleaning the metal particles next to a band saw with your hands while it is running and in your video 'Casting aluminium for the home from a simple 3D print' you put the crucible in the furnace with your hand while the furnace was running. I am surprised you still have your hands in good working condition. Be safe.

Try to get the 200 mesh fine zirconium sand for the first layer application which will give you the finger print accuracy of the process. You can go full investment but you have to fire that thing for a long time to make it usable. Shelling is more practical for larger things than the size of your fist. I can connect you to people that provide good products in the US for the shell consumables. I am in Australia and that is where I get them from.
@coplinryan7 жыл бұрын
Adding to the comment from gus bisbal, some of the bigger suppliers in the eastern us for ceramic shell products are ransom and randolph, remet, and saunders foundry supply. Theres a lot of smaller distributors though.

You should try making up some alumino bronze. 90% copper and 10% aluminum. I made some up and cast it and it has an interesting color. Also stays bright better than brass. From what I hear it is not much use except for decoration.
@mountainmanfab7 жыл бұрын
nice work!...course now ya know its time for some cast iron shenanigans :)May wanna break out the asbestos underwear tho,its even hotter...shouldn't have a problem with your burner design but it will play hell on the lifespan of your furnace refractory
@cg-gx1xf7 жыл бұрын
Great video! but in the future when you are sanding odd shapes like that there is a perfect tool if you have a drill press. Look up "sanding balls". I know harbor freight sells some 3" ones that are decent quality (though you may need to tighten them or epoxy the shaft so they have less slip). You just put it in a drill press, turn the drill press on, and you could finish sanding that entire brass piece in around 10 minutes. I often use it for cleaning brass fittings that have been sitting in my fittings box for too long since I can put my hands (with gloves) right up into the ball

hi Brian. I'm building a furnace like yours in fact I cut the top of mine just yesterday. it's going to take some time to build as I want to get it just rite. the only modification I am making to mine is something iv not seen on any homemade furnace on youtube at all but I think it will help my furnace last a very long time. I'm still gathering materials such as tools to help with skimming the dross off and lifting my cruicible out. like I said this sort of thing can be very dangerous if not done properly and taking seriusly. please excuse my bad gramme and hopefully il put a full video from start to finish on my full furnace build.
