20+ year Porsche owner and have owned many over that time. I owned a 1998 986 Boxster for 20 years and converted the engine to a 911 3.4 liter 320 hp canyon runner. Had the 3.4 in it for 13/20 years. ZERO issues. sold it. I Also own a 2008 987.1 Cayman S 320 hp with ECU, intake upgrades and suspension upgrades. Still own it after 10+ years and put 50k miles on it and have ZERO issues. I also have a 997.1 Carrera 4S for 14 years, purchased it with 6k miles on it and have put 90k+ miles on it and have had ZERO issues. When I got rid of my 986 Boxster I was in serious discussions to purchase a 987.2 Spyder. I absolutely love the look of them with the top off. But if I am totally honest, I walked away after the test drive because it did not feel any more special, nor worth double the price, than my modified 987.1 Cayman S. Bragging rights...sure, smiles per miles, no way. A month later I purchased a 2008 987.1 Boxster S. Does not look as fancy, but every bit as fun, and I can daily drive it. The Spyder is a very stiff ride even compared to my Cayman S on performance springs. Great for Sunday runs through the canyons, but definitely not a daily driver. Speed/power wise, there is not much difference between the 987.1 vs 987.2 0-60mph virtually identical. Longevity wise...this is kind of where I get defensive. I just don't think reviewers give the 987.1/997.1 a fair shake. Reviewers seem to know all the IMS/Bore scoring issues, which are blown out of proportion(2006-2008 we are talking 1% with these problems) with the 987.1 engines, but never talk about the known issues with 987.2 engines/transmission, which there are many. As time marches on and 987.2 reaches 10+ years old we are seeing a lot more issues with this engine/transmission design. Pdk issues costing $18k are becoming a problem for many owners, plus high pressure fuel pump failures, carbon build up on valves due to DFI system, long term effects of high pressure fuel wash on cylinders, and 997.2 Bore scoring in cold climates. I don't mention these to bash Porsche, because I am a huge Porsche Enthusiast and owner and I have driven over 400,000 miles in various Porsches with no problems or issues mechanically. Let's just compare apples to apples and stop worrying so much about the internet fear mongering, get yourself a nice condition, used Porsche, no matter what year, and get out and drive. Owning a Porsche is like taking the RED PILL of the car world. You will never look at other cars the same way again. By the way, Great video, fun as hell, and sounds amazing! 👍🏼👍🏼

Thank you! You and I have a very similar stable. I have a 997.1 C2S cab that I put 141,000 mi on. I have a 2006 Cayman S track car that has around 85k miles on it. And I have this Spyder which has around 30k miles on it. I've done a lot of work to my 911 as the previous owners were neglectful, but I've learned a lot. Thanks for sharing your insights and stories with us here. These are truly the red pill of the car world. I've sold so many of my friends on these after giving them rides or letting them drive. And all my cars have no issue keeping up with a GT4 RS :)

Bro, F'n PREACH dude!!! 100% Spot on. I've owned a 987.1 Boxster S for many years and I had a chance to rent a 987 spyder manual with buckets. That car absolutely ruined me. I've driven many sports cars and a handful of supercars and it is literally the perfect driving instrument. So I found myself in a predicament, do I sell my beloved boxster S to take on a ton of debt and upgrade to a spyder, or just modify my car? I decided to mod the hell out of the boxster and I'm glad I did. While I love the looks of the Spyder, the top really sucks if you live in a cooler climate like I do, so that also played into my decision. I ended up installing cayman R suspension, recaro bucket seats, 75mm cayman TB, valved exhaust, ECU tune, numeric shifter and cables, and a buch of other things. It absolutely transformed the car. While, it still be lacks an LSD and about 20-30 HP, the car scaled out at 3050 lbs so compared to more modern cars, it feels far more lively than its numbers would suggest. Honestly the best sports car value available today.

Hi, great write up of your thoughts. I went with the 981S boxster, my first P car. I've driven about 700miles and I'm getting closer to its limits each day. Its the perfect level of power, sound and modern features. I don't like the front of the newer 718, but the back does look a little nicer. Also didn't want to find double the money for a gts 4.0, or another £15k for the gts body kit on the 981. A sweet sport in value and performance I'm very happy with my choice, but did you compare the 981 S woth your other cars at any point?

I totally get that red pill part. I feel that same way about my 2020 Audi A4. It’s not an S4 or anything special, just a premium plus 45 S-line, but it is the nicest, newest car I’ve ever owned at 26. I often joke around with my friends that this car ruined other cars for me because the car does everything pretty much perfect. The interior is well appointed, it looks sharp and the performance, even for just an A4 blows away 90% of cars on the road. It’s a very impressive vehicle, and I know once I get a Porsche it’s going to be the same thing but on a higher level lol

I’m 19 years old and never got to really experience manuals. When I moved countries for college, I bought a used cx5 for around 13 grand. A month later I had serviced it 3 times and the dealership was offering to buy the car. I fell in love with a Miata when test driving it and somehow convinced my father to help me buy it. He did, and I got to experience driving a manual for the second time in my life (1st time was a 944 in a parking lot for like 5 minutes) for around 2h in the lot before insurance came back way too high. I couldn’t afford it so I didn’t even leave the dealership and had to give back the title which was already in my name and pick a ‘safer’ car. Especially since I didn’t tell my father what I bought was a manual. I went with a 2023 mazda 3 turbo, which I love, but it just feels too digital. The transmission is highly delayed and something about how the car is dampened makes it feel so digital I can’t explain it. I’m so eager to learn manuals, but i just can’t. I don’t live with family nearby and i’m afraid i’ll never get to experience one until I’m older and then i’ll just look like an idiot. I wish I could get one of these cayman’s and I eventually will, there’s no doubt in my mind about that. I just wish it could’ve been a manual, I can’t rev match for shit, I’ve tried in my sim and i can’t maintain the brake smooth and constant. My sim is setup for gt racing so I don’t know if pedals are setup right for that. I should’ve gotten that miata man

No worries mate, you got plenty of time left to learn a manual and rev matching. When I was 19 I started with a BMW E46. Doing rev match with this particular one and the engine was hard, 6 years later I could afford a Z4M which was a great setup for rev matches. When I was in my late 20s I could fulfill my dream of my own Porsche, I could never have imagined that when I was 19 so keep pushing and stay patient 😊

Thing I love about these older Porsche's is they are lighter so even though they are down on power they make up for it with weight. I got a 987.2 Boxster S in 2021 and I'll say the only "problem" I have with the car is the long gearing. With that being said they have the exact same issue with the GT4 so I guess it's just a cripple the Boxster/Cayman problem. Over all my setup is almost identical to yours and I can't say a single bad thing about this platform other then I wish the interior was slightly larger for my 6'3'' frame lol.

Thanks for the comment! I live in Mexico :) Roads are really nice here. We are very lucky, I get a lot of feedback saying that. Police are more worried about real crime (assaults, robberies, murders, etc) and there is a general respect in the area to just keep things tame in the city and go have a nice time in the country. Similar but unofficial to the Isle of Mann (don't quote me on that). Just have to know your road, environment and level of traffic and surroundings when you go out. Right time of day, etc and respect others. That car sounds mental btw, can't imagine all the power. What does it weigh? And thanks for the suggestion! In future POV's the angles get better. No one gives you a crash course in filming both audio and video. Trial by fire and failure. Given you've had experience with a lot of different models that I'm interested in, I'd love to hear your opinion - As someone who is looking to get into their first Porsche (probably a year or two from now) what would you recommend in terms of fun per dollar? I've had the stupid fast but numb sports sedan experience, and I want to get something light and nimble with just the right power to rip down backroads without ending yourself. So far it seems like the contenders are all Cayman S/R and Boxster S/Spyder from the 987/981 generations: 987.1 - Cheap as hell, IMS scary, bore scoring scary. 987.2 - About 10-15k more expensive, less scary mechanically. 981 - About the same price as 987.2, but I've heard are a little more numb, Car feels "bigger". or (the most predictable curveball ever) - A brand new GR86. Less power, less enjoyable sound, but cheaper than a 987.2/981, cheaper maintenance, comes with a factory warranty. In any case, the car would be strictly a toy, not a daily. Love to hear your take, as you seem like someone who is very much more interested in feel than power, and I think that's what I'm looking for.

Tbh everyone loves the new BRZ ts. I’d test drive one of those. It’s not going to have the same theater as a Porsche… but it has a lot going for it. Will be near impossible to find my 987.2 spyder in manual and buckets. 981 Boxster s manual is a GREAT one-car Porsche. Not as raw as mine, but tons of more refinement and luxuries and the 981 engines sound amazing. Skip over all 987.1 for the reasons you listed.

@@DasCayman Much appreciated! I’ve got some time before I’ll be jumping in, so I can scour the internet for a decent 987.2/981. If nothing particularly well-optioned pops up, I suspect it’ll be some version of the 86/BRZ. I’m told there might be a turbo 3cyl version soon which sounds kind of interesting.

Pilot Cup 2s on my slightly nodded C7 Z06 dd were great when it wasn't raining. Rain was no joke.😅 That's when I'd turn on every nanny. I now went with Cup 4S, or whatever the all weather Cup tires are. Much better in the rain, but I wouldst want to track them by any stretch. I ride bikes, too and have a BMW S1000XR I like well, but in OKC we just don't have the roads and the traffic is getting worse. So, you have to hunt for occasional on/off ramps and hope you don't have anyone in front.😅

You're gonna laugh at me but I want to get a Mk6 jetta sportwagen TDI and build it to be able to keep up with a car like that (on the road). The tdi's are pretty much the only vw's that come with 6-speed manuals, the gas engine models seem to all be 5 spd. And because they're diesel they have a very high torque to horsepower ratio, my stock Mark 6 Jetta TDI with the dsg already comes with 234 ft lbs and 140hp. Would want to do an oem+ style build, a nice beautiful blue with matching blue calipers and metallic grey alfa romeo cloverleaf wheels. Maybe I'll even do something autistic with the badges to make it look like a Volkswagen equivalent of the Porsche Stuttgart badge

@@DasCayman I took the red pill after lusting for too long and purchased a high spec, lower mile 2011 Boxster S sight unseen. This was my early retirement gift to myself in August of 2023. The Spyder was out of my budget but I have no regrets with my car. It's completely stock and fabulous the way she is right now but I'm a tinkerer so I'm going to tinker. I'm very surprised that you're getting that sound with the AM headers and stock exhaust. I was thinking that I needed a AM exhaust but rethinking this after hearing your car. My goal is to squeeze out some more engine performance but to keep the softer ride for my harsh New England roads. I believe it is the smallest wheel offered of that generation 2009-2012. Steering feel can be improved with replacing suspension component that have rubber bushings for spherical bearings.
