For Lyle's big scheme, a corporation I used to work for would have non-compete clauses for franchisees who opened up stores. Basically the only time we'd revoke their franchise was if the franchisee had sexual harassment charges against them. Which was really common. Then we'd turn the store into a corporate location now that someone else put in the money to open up the location. And after cleaning up a bit, sell it to a new person, double dipping basically. And eventually another harassment charge comes up and we'd repeat the process. Apart from that there isn't really a need to get rid of bad franchisees. They had to pay royalties for our brand, and were obligated to maintain certain aspects of their location according to corporate decisions. If they reneged on their side of the contract then we'd collect on the penalties they'd have to pay. There is never really a situation where the brand doesn't win in the end. It was a fun job.
