lets not pretend that it takes much engineering to put an already developed launcher onto an already developed truck, same goes for a lot of "new" systems which simply marry existing turrets with existing platforms in new combinations .. like the AGM on Piranha etc. ... it was the whole point of having modular platforms to get such growing product variety. Not saying that there are no new developments or that there wouldnt be an uptake, but most of what is presented on the defence exhibitions lately is just existing stuff put together in different platform combinations, with minimal engineering required to make the adaptation.

A cost effective wheeled version of the M270 MLRS. Lighter weight means it’s easier on roads, easier to move in theater, & lower fuel consumption. As a bonus you still get the full dozen rockets as intended & not the 1/2 dozen the HIMARS gives. HIMARS was designed to supplement the M270 in expeditionary/rapid reactions units with it being air transportable on more airframes & taking up less space in an Amphibious Assault Ship.
@kevinkelly61894 ай бұрын
The M270 fully combat loaded is under 27 tons, so this is much heavier, approaching the 50 ton weight of a MBT. It's wheeled foundation probably provides a much higher transport speed though.

Is's better protected than M270 and can shoot more ammo (updated M270 will probably also do most of that). The mobility is probably better in most cases. Bud weight and width will limited its air mobility. But besides US, most countries don't care much here.

K239 Chunmoo has been around a while. Same system. Fires both South-Korean and NATO missiles.
@keso_de_bola17505 ай бұрын
I think this has more to do with the manufacturing in volume issue. If Hyundai Defense alone is manufacturing the K239 Chunmoo for NATO and its allies need for Artillery rocket systems, they may not be able to handle the demand. Plus, if shit hits the fan and either South Korea disconnects from the West (highly unlikely at this point) or South Korea goes to war and had its factories compromised (more possible outcome), there would be no ability to manufacture or in an extent, maintain the systems. Rheinmetall here is basically saying "Right, I'll handle majority of Europe's needs using European platforms and a German base vehicle so we'd have it a bit easier on logistics and maintanance". Fair to note that despite the similarities of the Chunmoo and the GMARS, the Chunmoo uses a South Korean Hyundai truck as a platform while the GMARS uses a German MAN truck as a platform, while the M270 uses an M113 platform with a Cummins V8 and HIMARS uses an American military truck with a Caterpillar engine. That small aspect like the truck alone gives you an idea on the maintenance and logistics, what more about the systems involved.

Doubling the amount of ammunition seems sensible at first glance, but this makes the vehicle larger and therefore easier to detect (both visually and by radar). If the device is destroyed, all the ammunition is also destroyed. It would make more sense to use a smaller vehicle with less ammunition on board and have an ammunition truck ride along. In addition, the launch platform does not have to travel long distances to replenish ammunition because the ammunition transporter does that. Both vehicles are small and therefore easier to hide. In addition, the same amount of ammunition would have allowed more of these systems to be distributed over the land area. This decentralization makes it more difficult to combat this rocket artillery.
@thorH.3 ай бұрын
But it also means that if you want a strike with more than 6 rockets you only need half the trucks. For European armies, who do not require air transport the larger version makes sense.

But also closer to the FEBA you need smaller easier to hide vehicles, maybe a flatbed pickup that fires 2 of the smaller rockets but is disguised with a frame and a tarpaulin. Take out the one of the large expensive MAN 8x8 with 12 rockets and you have lost a lot of firepower, lose one of the smaller size of which you have many is not such a problem.
