I am always amazed by the "decline of service" you get. I get the no oil change, no new wiper blade kind of things; but, the major safety related ones...I hope your shop gets a waiver signed.
@calyodelphi124
@calyodelphi124 2 жыл бұрын
Shops usually do. They make you sign a document stating explicitly that you declined the services they offered so that you can't come back and sue them for refusing to fix your car when it fails catastrophically and causes you or others serious injury. Or rather, you COULD try to sue them, but all they'd have to do is present that paper you signed as evidence in the arbitration or courts to say "We WANTED to fix the opposing party's car, but they declined. Here's signed and dated proof of it." and then the case gets thrown out. :)

I’ve had this happen before! Customer came in with an engine light and a misfire - already had at a previous shop who shotgunned spark plugs and ignition coils at the truck (2007 F-150). They also shotgunned an ENGINE and still had a misfire! Long story short, they re-used the intake manifold when they replaced the engine and never noticed the brake fluid in it…the master cylinder was leaking brake fluid into the booster…it got so full of fluid from the customer adding brake fluid (without mentioning it) that it started sucking brake fluid into the intake manifold through the vacuum line. The cylinder misfiring was the cylinder closest to the vacuum port on the intake!
@almostfm
@almostfm 2 жыл бұрын
Geez, when I've got a misfire, at least I know what cylinder it's on. SOP is to swap the coil with one on an adjacent cylinder and see if the misfire moves with the coil. So far, I'm 3 for 3 with having it move. But if it didn't, then you start digging deeper.

Glad you document your work the way you do Ray. It protects you from people like this truck owner. Wouldn't surprise me they'd try to blame you and your shop if that master cylinder malfunctions completely or the tire blows and causes a traffic collision that ends up with injury or death. You have video evidence on top of your other shop documentation that you warned him the truck was unsafe. Could save you from a frivolous lawsuit someday from people like him.

Ray saw specific problems with it and tried to upsell the customer into bankruptcy. Stop acting like Biden and wanting to spend TRILLIONS of OTHER PEOPLE's money. If they only have $100 to spend on a repair [tire] or pay $1000 for a repair that was UPSOLD and get tossed from their home because they can't make rent, don't fault them. (instead of , "I was playing with my phone and didn't notice the cars were stopped at the red light"). I know someone it happened to. The brakes were found to be functioning correctly. The driver just hoped he'd get off by blaming the owner. Ps Knew someone who had the wire showing like that. The cops pulled him over and ticketed him. The wire hits the road and makes sparks (easy to spot at night time)

I lend my Wagon to a family member as we get it ready for a roadworthy transfer (I let them drive it as it safer). We were fart arsing around with the bumper and I just happened to glance at the inner tyre surface of the front and noticed it bald and cords showing. I banned them from driving the car for the weekend (they had planned to go out 500 km) and to take their old car instead. Due to the limited space in the wheel well - you could not see the bald inner surface of the tyres on both sides unless wheel was turned out full lock and you happened to look. Just got it fixed today after a 2 week wait and it turned out the steering rack ends both side were worn causing the alignment to go out. 2 new tyres front 2 weeks ago ($310) and today 2 x steering rack ends ($75 each - $279 total) and wheel alignment and car is safer than ever. Could I afford it ? Hell NO. So I used what left of my savings and got it fixed. And the reason why ? Because no way in Hell an I letting a family member drive an unsafe car.

Wow. I'm an aircraft mechanic, and yeah, we've got a whole big thing about customers who decline to get their airplane fixed. There's a specific way to sign off the maintenance logbook for the aircraft, and yeah, it's the mechanic's call as to whether the aircraft is in an airworthy condition, or unairworthy in this case, and it gets signed off as such, with a list of discrepancies furnished to the owner. A given mechanic doesn't have to do the repair(s), but SOME licensed mechanic somewhere is going to have to do the repair(s) and sign them off. So, yeah, an aircraft owner can decline service, but they're not flying it out without special authorization from the FAA for a ferry flight. That BS you have to put up with doesn't fly - literally - when it comes to aviation maintenance. Love your videos, Ray, and your integrity and work ethic. You've always got good stuff.

Where I'm from we have biannual Motor Vehicle Inspections and we are encouraged to call a Motor Vehicle Compliance Officer if an unsafe vehicle leaves our shop. Yes it's a dirty move but it could save the operator's life and those of fellow motorists. I have never had to do this but I've seen it done maybe 3 times after great deliberation of all us senior licensed technician's in the shop. You could have swapped the right front wheel with the spare (that looks almost brand new) or at least advise the owner to do so until he/she can buy a new tire.
@animejanai4657

Getting involved like that can create liability without the owner requesting the spare be swapped. The lawyer will say the mechanic did an UNAUTHORIZED modification that resulted in the car driving differently which is why the accident occurred.

+1. Garages should be required by law to report such cases to the corresponding authorities and such vehicles should not be allowed back on the road until they pass an inspection. That being said, I do not know how it is in the US, but where I live there's a lot of corruption and pretty much anyone who knows someone can pass an inspection with a car like that. Sad, really.

Another vehicle that shouldn't be on the road until it is fixed but the person wants to drive it instead. I think that shops should have a right to put a sign on the vehicles that are unsafe to alerts other drivers that the vehicle next to them in front or behind them may lead to an accident.

my jeep had a master cylinder leaking into the booster it took me years to figure out where all my brake fluid was going I replaced the calipers all the lines which were due and the brake cylinders in the rear I would still slowly lose fluid so I would just top it up every few months. what made me figure out it was the master leaking was the booster filled up then started sucking brake fluid into the intake through the vacuum tube. all the sudden the engine would blow out a huge cloud of white smoke and flaming brake fluid dripping out the exhaust

There's a Dirty Harry axiom that fits here: a man's got to know his limitations. Before I retired, I did as much of the work as I could do, unless it required special tools or I didn't have the time or, since I have to work outside in the driveway, the weather was bad. Now that I'm retired and have the time, I still will do a lot of my own work but now that I'm driving less than 5K miles per year if it's something that will not likely need attention again in my lifetime the dealer gets the job.
