The Guardian's Marina Hyde's columns have satirically slashed some of our most well-known public figures from politicians to celebrities.
She sat down with Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark to talk about going to university with Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and how politicians seem to live in a 'Marvel Multiverse' where they keep coming back.
They also discussed how satire is used in Hyde's columns and the associations she employs to link politics to popular culture.

Satire has totally changed reality materially. It is just hard to quantify or track because it affects individuals with the mind (and orientation) to appreciate it and let it affect their future judgments.

I would say Marina is being nowhere near cynical enough. As she said at the start of the interview, Kwasi Kwarteng was known for his intelligence. I'm afraid I don't buy this idea that he made a mistake, he knows the markets, he knows economics, I'm sure he knew exactly what he was doing.

If only we could go back to a time when the phrase 'politics is boring' rang true. Have seen over the last 6+ years the UK leader become progressively more incompetent, to the point where they have become hopeless at their main strong suit, managing the economy.

I think the decline of quality in our politicians has probably got something to do with the general decline in respect for politics as a profession. It seemed to start in the early Sixties, with That Was The Week That Was and the Profumo Affair. People like Robin Day and David Frost started talking to politicians and public figures in a much less deferential way, which wasn't exactly a bad thing, but it led eventually to an almost complete distrust of anyone in public office. People have become very cynical about the motives of politicians, with the end result being that only the worst possible people end up doing it.

@@deejay5860 Not read any of Hyde’s excellent satire then? Jones? An occasional contributor who gets it from readers in the comments. From the other side of the political spectrum (unlike the swivel eyed Daily Mail other views are allowed), Simon Jenkins is like Jones, reliably wrong on many things. John Crace is funny too, not that the people and what they are doing is funny, just they are absurd. As is judging something you have never read?
