I'm just starting, only 2 weeks into decluttering a 4 bedroom, 3500 sq ft home. My kids have all moved out and I've just felt suffocated by all the stuff I have. This whole concept was new to me. I'd never even heard of minimalism. I'm probably not going to be an actual minimalist, but I've donated 45 boxes of stuff and thrown away 30 bags of garbage. I can not thank you enough for making this channel and sharing this.

The quote about grief filling the whole space in your soul was eye opening. Sometimes we will downplay our own feelings because we know someone who has more to deal with than we do. But experience tells me that this quote is on the money. So many of us really need to be told this.

So I want you to know that we decided to go trucking with my husband last year. This means that myself, my husband, our one year old and 5 year old (plus our German shepherd) all live full time in a semi truck. We fit all of our clothes plus a laundry basket in a closet (3 feet tall 1.5 feet wide) and have an entire kitchen, homeschooling section and baby changing station. You helped me SO much. I would never have felt the confidence to do this with kids without everything you shared. You are amazing!

I found you last year and decluttered all summer. Recently my husband was terribly injured. When we finally got home to our children, I was so thankful that I had decluttered! It took me no time at all to get things back in order. Also, this time of recovery would have been unbearable if I was still trying to maintain all that inventory. What I'm telling here doesn't come close to expressing truly how much you have been a blessing on my whole family. Thank you for everything you have done for us.

Amen about teaching any child to read!! As a reading professional, my best advice to teach reading is GET TO KNOW THE CHILD. Every child can NOT fit into any single program. This is where public schools fall short of teaching children. Keep up the good work, girls. (I am 75 and have been a teacher for 45 of those years.) Love what you share.

I am not super messy and have always believed that I am quite organized. So why was I always straightening, tidying, organizing, re-organizing, re-storing, changing everything around so a system worked for longer than a week? Your philosophy regarding inventory has literally revolutionized life for me! I have off-loaded so much stuff in the last 4-5 weeks that my husband does not know what is happening! Every time I think "But it cost so much" or "so-and-so gave it to me out of love", I hear your voice and it gives me the courage to donate or even throw away (expired food, etc. I have never used it. Am I really going to open it now? WHY IS IT STILL HERE?) I tell everyone about you and how you have changed how I not only look at what I own but what I potentially consider buying! I am so happy that I discovered your videos! So thank you for being you and sharing yourself!! Please keep up the good work!! We need you! God Bless!!

Dawn! I think you could make some brilliant homeschool content, you dont have to recommend curriculum or teaching methods, but rather how to marry homeschooling with minimalism. One of the pitfalls of homeschool is wanting to, or feeling obligated to, buy ALL the things, learn ALL the things, do ALL the things and go ALL the places. 'If we just had this or did this our homeschool would be successful' Alot of your principles for a highly simplified lifestyle could really impact homeschool too. For eg i have found that low inventory, the container method, eating the frog, and particularly the 4 burner principle, have all really impacted and been vital to our homeschool. Plus Ive realise 'its in the motion, not the'...homeschool curriculum 😂 I think a video about how you can apply these principles to your homeschool would be really really valuable! ❤

I second this comment! I’m starving for Minimalist Homeschool solidarity. I need encouragement because most people’s schooling paradigm in general is pressure to plan it all, have it all, do it all. So I’m constantly inevitably feeling like a failure.

I’m starting my first year homeschooling this fall and while I think I’m headed in a good direction, this really resonates. I find that there are so many things I want to try and I think it’ll get to the point that I’m self sabotaging if I’m not careful. Will definitely be applying Dawn’s principles!

I second this!! I homeschooled for 25 years in 8 states and towards the end did workshops and conventions, etc. The number of homeschooling moms/families that could benefit from a minimalist attitude is HUGE. Even taking steps towards minimizing would reduce the stress exponentially. There's probably some cute "formula" in there where you could knock off x number of stress points by decluttering a certain size container. The kids could get involved. There could be stickers!!! Wait, whoa, sticker clutter. Yes, I was a homeschooling mom.

Dawn: you are so right when you say you hesitate to mention curriculum because it may not work for others. I homeschooled my two daughters from K-12th grade. They are 27 and 23 now and both successful college grads. One is a Children’s pastor at a church, the other is an RN, like her mama. I used the same book, “Teach your child how to read in 100 easy lessons” and for my oldest daughter, it was 70 exasperating lessons before I finally realized it would not work for her. My youngest almost taught herself with the book. For me, homeschooling became so much easier once I figured out each of my girls’ learning styles. That took a while for me to figure out! I tell moms all the time, be patient, put lots of prayer into it, and don’t pressure yourself to keep up with others. Do what works for your kids. Thank you for your channel, your sweet humble spirit and your smile! And the next time someone asks you if you have a teaching degree, tell them you don’t need one because these curriculum companies make it easy to walk step by step through how to teach your kid. All you need is a love and desire to see them learn and they will succeed!!! No one can love your kids and want the best for them more than you do! That’s what qualifies you to be their teacher! 😊

We lost our second family dog in April as well. He was 15 years old and had battled cancer for almost 2 years. It still catches me unaware at times and also brings back the sadness of losing our first dog 5 years ago. I sometimes think it’s harder to lose a family pet because they love so unconditionally. Your dog was an important part of your life and you should never get down on yourself for being sad about the loss of a family member. ❤❤❤

We have finished homeschooling thru high school here. So, today I started posting my high school curriculum online to sell because we won't need it any longer. Two 7-foot tall bookshelves will be decluttered out of our home along with all the textbooks, equipment, etc. My husband asked what I was going to put in those spaces and I smiled and said. NOTHING! I can't wait to declutter this part of my life and bless local families with the books they will need.

Dawn, I am a retired teacher (1977-2014) and I want you to know, eventhough we were educated to teach, we didn't truly know how to teach until we got into the classroom and did it. Much of my teaching was thinking on my feet. Every child did not learn the same way, I adapted lessons over and over again. I taught the same subject but sometimes 4 or 5 different ways trying to make sure every child understood the concept. You explain things to us every video. So you are a teacher. Your credentials are your students ( children).

I own your book and have watched your videos for years. They have been helpful in motivating and guiding me to clear things out of my house. However, you said something in this video that I hadn’t heard or thought of before. Forgiving ourselves for any mistakes we’ve made in decluttering. Like getting rid of something that was precious and not realizing it in the moment. It can completely stop the decluttering process and the guilt comes in. I never considered forgiving myself for that. Huge revelation for me and something I will carry with me as I push through to get rid of more. When that guilt creeps in, I’ll forgive myself again and keep going. Thank you Dawn.

As a veteran homeschool mom to 5 kids I want to thank you for making this video. With the popularity of homeschool on the rise I've found that there are so many voices out there speaking about homeschool, but without the true experience and knowledge that is necessary to really be a help to other families. I know that in my first years of homeschool there was a very steep learning curve before I fell into the groove of knowing what worked best for our family and being able to sift through the many options to know what would be best for my children. There is no perfect curriculum out there! Each child is so unique, and it's okay if something works for one child and doesn't work for another. I always recommend new homeschool families find a seasoned mentor to help them through the journey of homeschooling so that they can have confidence! You have definitely shown yourself a seasoned veteran of minimalism and I really appreciate your insight into that topic!❤

When I first started homeschooling 25 years ago (yikes), I went to a convention, and I was so completely overwhelmed with all the materials. I kind if shut down. Then someone made some basic suggestions and worked off that with my first. 100 easy Lessons worked with my second child but not my third. All my kids were such different learners and we went through so much material. You are right about how kids all learn so differently.
@garlicgalore Жыл бұрын
We unschooled in the days before anything much was online and conferences were few and far between. Sometimes it felt like all we were accomplishing was merely keeping them out of the system and not doing anything educational, but the experiences of living a full life provided lots of chances to learn and use skills. We also went to the library all the time and read, read, read all sorts of books. The two who went to college graduated magna and summa cum laude and all are pursuing lives in their areas of interest. It was a great thing to do, and I wish I'd heard about minimalism while we were raising this family. Stuff often got in the way!

On the topic of curriculum, I remember my first homeschool convention where I heard a speaker talk about her room full of different types of curriculum. I was blown away at this...in my mind I thought I would find the perfect one and it would work for all four of my children. I was disheartened a bit, but the following year I recall looking at my homeschooling area and having different materials that worked for one that didn't work for the others and that was okay. It was so refreshing to learn about the different types of learners and that there is material that works for each type. This was enlighten especially because my oldest was a reluctant reader up until third grade when we discovered Usborne Books and then I had to remind him that the bathroom was not a library and he couldn't bring all those books with him...he is 31 now and works with rockets (lifelong passion). If anyone that is discouraged, I also remember the amazing Debbie Strayer, my evaluator, who let me know during one of my evaluation sessions when I was in tears telling her I didn't know what I was doing. She looked me in the eyes and said... Lydia, remember they learn in spite of you. God has put in them what they need...you are the facilitator. That year and beyond, they would test 1 to 5 years ahead of their current grade. Sorry for the longwindedness. God bless you all.

OHHH MYYY GOODNESS, YES! I pulled my kids out the last month of school this last year to homeschool, and they have been home the last 3 months. I've learned that when they were in school, our inventory was low enough and I could keep up. But since they are home 24/7 now, I have to get around to going through my house ALL OVER AGAIN, to make it more manageable and easy. But they absolutely love it! We've had so much more time together and having fun and playing outside daily. Learning that I would rather get rid of most of my already decluttered, and what I call an already minimalist house, to have even more quality time with them every day, has been the best eye opener for how much i really do not care about "things". It's been the best decision for our family❤

I homeschooled my two kids for 3 years (20 years ago) and have never regretted it. And yes! I wish I had known about minimalism way back then! I kept so many things for far too long. I do have deep regret over one sentimental item I got rid of. I so wish I had kept it. I love that you touched on the guilt or apprehension we have as 'good moms' who want to be prepared with a lot of things in our home just in case we need it or even too many sentimental items from every memory in the past, it's OK to let some things go or take a picture of it then let it go and create space for the present and the future. You've helped me realize this! And I am dating a man from another country and I can see the difference in how much stuff I have, how much value I place on it and how much time I spend on my stuff in my home compared to him and his cultural perspective on what we really need to get through the day.

I understand what you mean about homeschooling. I don't tell anyone that I homeschool, and I've been doing it for 8 years. I now have an 8th grader and an 11th grader. When other moms find out that I homeschool, they want all sorts of information. I'm very apprehensive and careful about the information that I give them because they ultimately will find out how their children learn and what is best for them through day-to-day teaching and experience. I may "guide" them to a certain way of teaching, but it always comes with my own disclaimer.

Oh, Dawn, you are so encouraging. It is therapeutic to declutter and helps me have perspective with possessions. It is helping me keep our family photo albums to a minimum.

I missed seeing you at the conference, but I stopped by your table a couple of times. So excited when I heard you were there. If in my young adult years more people had said to me, "Do you know that you don't need this much stuff?" ...Instead of all the years of "you have too much stuff," I think I could have started dealing with these issues sooner and in a more gracious way.

I started homeschooling in the mid 90’s. Not a lot of people were doing it and our family thought we were going to screw up our kids. I never felt confident teaching our 3 kids. Two went to public schools in their junior high years and transitioned just fine. They are all grown up now and married with kids of their own. And our family and friends still talk about how great our kids are, I thank God I was able to homeschool them. Would definitely be doing it if I were raising kids now. You’re doing great Dawn!❤

As a teacher and mom to grown kids (& twin 2 year old grand boys) I have used your information for my home and first grade classroom! It has changed all of our lives! This summer I’m going through and decluttering yet another layer and it has gotten so much easier! Your channel has been such a fantastic resource!

I am so impressed by your warmth, empathy, clarity and your teaching ability. You seem to be close to your feelings and you seem to be having so much fun. Above all, you have found something that gives you real meaning, both to yourself and to many, many others. I'm so glad that I found you on youtube in 2020 after wanting to declutter for quite some time. You have given me inspiration and motivation as well as the theory and tools. I am very grateful.

Love love love camping. Go whenever I can in our little campervan. Living in a tiny space forces you to be minimal. Another great reason to be on this journey.

Your sharing what you are passionate about and sharing your knowledge and experience. That is more powerful to someone who needs to hear it. If I’ve learned anything in my life on earth is words are powerful if you need to hear them. I think you are making more of a impact than you realize. Share what you feel free sharing, someone needs to hear it. And listen if you need to hear.

I LOVE how you speak about homeschooling! You talk about it the way it is! I just finished my 4th year and also feel like I’m often still figuring this out because both my kids are so different in how they learn. And I have an education background! I think it’s the same whether you’ve had classroom experience or not. I’m sure you get shade from people who are not homeschoolers but no one whose done it will judge you. Thanks for talking about it when you do! Also minimizing my homeschool supplies helped me feel SO much less overwhelmed! It was a game changer in my 2nd yr of homeschool!

Same for me! It was rewarding for me and my child....challenging at times for me and my child. As I taught, I got to know my child in a much different way than sending them off to be taught. Great relationships!

Ive learned so much from you! I've decluttered our house constantly for the last two years because of what Ive learned from you! I got your book at Christmas and love it! 3 kids, homeschool, farm life, and this is even spreading to areas of the farm that haven't ever been cleaned out. It's just "always been there/that way" for 3 full generations. With my youngest being 3, I'm finding myself with spare time, especially because my house is so managable now. So I've been blessing family and friends with what I've learned from you and decluttering their homes with them. It's stunning the amount of things removed once you start! Thank you for sharing with us. ITS CHANGED EVERYTHING, and now I get to spread the freedom with others!

I dislike teach in 100 easy lessons. My kids hated it too lol. I think your message works so well for homeschooling because if it doesn't work, just let it go just like anything else. Awesome message. BTW, we're living in our trailer for 6 weeks discovering American history first hand. We love it!!

I greatly appreciate all you insight with minimalism. I have used many of your tips in my home and it feels so much better. I am a teacher and I work very, very hard to learn, take courses and get to know my students individually so I can meet their individual needs. My students need me and the peers in our class to grow, develop and learn. Homeschooling is not the same as having a trained professional. Visiting a doctor does make one qualified to treat others. See a spaceship launch does not qualify one to build one. Being a student does NOT qualify someone to be a teacher. I take a lot or pride in my work and I spend my summer learn and creating to better meet my students where they are. Stick with your strengths-minimalism.

I was elated to meet you at the CHEC conference. I stalked your booth at the exhibit hall. Your message has changed my family’s life. I so appreciate your authenticity and joy. You make simplifying not only attainable, but attractive. Thank you for sharing your light with all of us! I didn’t realize how heavy the burden of surplus was until your message got through to me. THANK YOU!

Loved homeschooling! I have homeschooled 9 children. Less material and more creativity is what worked for me. All my kids were so different I used what worked for that child. They are all very successful and wonderful parents now. Enjoy your time. It’s a very very fast season.

100 Easy Lessons can work with any child, but if that child is developmently ready. However, I didn't use it after my first child. I found it mind-numbing. It's easy to get stuck in the curriculum hole and want all the new things. We wrapped up our 6th year homeschooling today, and I can honestly say less is more. When I simplified our curriculum and school days, it changed our homeschool.

Hi. I live in the UK and as a rule we don't home school here. In fact, I only know of one girl who is home schooled, and that is literally because there is not a local school place for her. As soon as one comes up, her parents will be sending her to school. From all of the different US based creators I watch on You Tube it seems a much more popular choice for you. I would really welcome a video on WHY you chose to home school. And maybe why it is a more popular choice in the US than the UK. I would love to hear your perspective on this. I love your content Dawn (and Diane!) and always feel blessed when a new video pops up in my notifications. Thank you for everything that you do 😊

Loved teach your child to read for my daughter. Worked great for her. My son- not so much. We use some of the stories now for him to practice reading but not to learn to read. Highly recommend it for the kids it works with but it's not for everyone. We use Heart of Dakota for our regular curriculum. It's been been a wonderful fit for our family. Little prep and works your child towards independence with their school. Not for everyone but great for us.

Love you both! Have watched all your videos. Would be so cool to hear you in person at that conference. I homeschool also. Your teachings on simplifying and minimizing has helped me to not have to worry about my house as much and be able to do other things such as a music ministry and a writing ministry!

I started decluttering five years ago and in all that time I've only had to replace one item. I don't consider myself to be a minimalist but I do feel better keeping only those items that I use and/or love.
