I remember reading a biography of Jim Morrison (The Doors) years ago, and I recall a passage talking about how before he was famous, Jim would challenge his friends to take any book off his book shelf, open the start of any chapter, start reading out loud, and Jim would be able to name the author and the book the passage was from. This video reminded me of that.

jim was a beast. he wrote papers from books that were so obscure his teacher had to look them up in library of congress to even verify they were real. (they were).

Classic books are essential to read when you're a newbie when it comes to literature. There's a variety of authors to choose from. The writing styles in that particular time period are far more eloquent and captivating right from the get go. Emmie and Carolyn may be the definition of friends for life. They just get on with each other seamlessly.

The first line of The Old Curiosity Shop is "Although I am an old man, night is generally my time for walking." It isn't until page 7 that he mentions the 'inquiry'. I think you have an abridged version of what is a very long novel.

With Kerouac it is not the actual first sentence but the rhythm of the opening paragraph that one can gauge what his book is supposed to be. The pastoral and florrid opening of most novels were passé to Kerouac and his peers by then and he took off the reins a bit so that, while there's a period, it behaves like a drum beat of phrases that are meant to have a run-on feeling.

This was fun, you guys need to develop this idea of literary games/trivia for a whole series -- it has real potential, like the book guy who's gotten millions of views simply roasting bookshelves. For example, it might be fun to use the maps in Malcolm Bradbury's "Atlas of Literature" and guess what book happened in a specific map. Or guess places on Tolkien's Middle Earth map. Or guess a fictional world by its map. More of these trivia type videos, please!

Coming a few months late to express my utter outrage (/j) that Carolyn did not, in fact, read the first sentence of The Turn of the Screw. I knew it as soon as she said the title because I read that in October and that sentence was totally wrong to me, so I checked. The actual first sentence is: "The story had held us, round the fire, sufficiently breathless, but except the obvious remark that it was gruesome, as, on Christmas Eve in an old house, a strange tale should essentially be, I remember no comment uttered till somebody happened to say that it was the only case he had met in which such a visitation had fallen on a child." Carolyn read the first sentence of Part I, so all judgement on it is unfair to Mr. James even if I cared sadly little for the book myself. Still, 'twas a fun video where I correctly guessed all the ones I had read before and had the right first sentence. And good job Emma for doing so well.
